Just been to a high street opticians to have an eye test.

I've got to get some new glasses as my eyesight has changed slightly. I like my glasses so I asked if I could get new lenses put in my current glasses - I can, the price will be just over £100. However, for £125 I can get two pairs of glasses, one with a tint (basically sunglasses).

So I've ordered two new pairs of glasses, with one being... exactly the same as my current pair.

AIBU to think that this just doesn't compute?!

Shop-ticians. Not so much a health care profession than a money making business. Go next time for a local optometrist. They may not be much cheaper but at least you'll be paying for their (usually much longer) time rather than expensive desert island tv adverts and won't be forced into having specs. My family are all optometrists and the appt lasts 45mins with loads of different tests the shop-ticians don't do. Also with the latter you are almost guaranteed to come out with specs even if your prescription has only changed by 0.25.

Get a prescription from anyone - and just get your glasses reglazed by an online service, I've used www.specs-by-post.com/ turned around the frames I sent them on friday, were back in my hands on tuesday and all for under 15quid (10quid+postage both ways)

I got fab new glasses recently in Asda of all places! £50 all in, and that's including all the fancy coatings that other places have as add ons.

The best part of it is, the optometrist who works there also works in the local independant optician I used to go to!

Understood, hiyoulot, but IME the difference in price between Specsavers and an independent runs to hundreds of pounds. Not difficult to see why people go to specsavers and must say I've always found the service good, and none of the pushiness you describe.
