To be considering buying something from Boden?

Ten years I've been a Mumsnetter, and I still haven't worked it out: is Boden OK, just naice expensive clothes, or are they somehow the badge of something shameful, and wearing them will brand me forever?

(And in any case, being a size 20/22, is there even any point trying to wear Boden?)

It's nearly as bad as the White company. All fucking silver sprayed twigs and shapeless cashmere bed socks. Fucking bed socks.

its the cuts/styles rather than the length, IMO boden only looks smart on tall people, on short/average people they just look like the kids trying really hard to be in the big girls' gang IMO

I know what you mean, some of the prints are a little avant garde. I work from home mostly and the dresses are nice for sitting around typing in, also travelling in the car, but I wear more formal stuff when meeting clients.

I do like the tops; the plain ones are nice - also the cardis. I bought a jacket recently, in a raisin colour, it's like mid/dark grey with a slight heather tint, goes with everything. I did hmm and haw over the price though. Hmm

I couldn't comment on the trousers or skirts as I've not bought them.

Some of the stuff is very bright.. and a bit over-exhuberant, perhaps - in the catalogues, the models look a bit shocked like they've been jabbed with a cattle prod... Grin

It's not all vile, wearing demin mini skirt and leggings at work today, you'd never know where it was from and bought in sale. However, that line that always comes out about amazing quality I'm a bit Hmm about. Yes, some kids stuff is but anything knitted bobbles and morphs into weird shapes and the sheepskin boots I bought DD in the sale last year actually unravelled within a fortnight - they are selling them again this year and I see all the reviews saying "I think I bought a faulty pair because the stitches are coming undone". Two years running is a bit shit.

The boys-in-caps thing, I think you can thank Joules for that.

I really like Boden clothes... Also like Jigsaw but can't really afford it anymore since having DC.

I'm not into the prints so much but the colourways Grin the clothes come in really suit me.

I guess I am a reasonably conservative middle England style dresser but I like the quirky touches to the clothes in which I fancy myself as looking like an eccentric art therapist or amateur theatre director or somesuch... Blush

But never buy anything nowadays unless it is in the sales.

Also since having DC have gotten into Mini Boden [it wears well and looks lovely imo] but mainly buy this on ebay or in the sales.

I think if you like it and can afford it buy it.

Who cares what anyone else thinks?

Bo-curious Grin

I wear Birkenstocks, but only because of fallen arches (vile clodhoppery unfeminine footwear)

My grandad was a brickie, my grandmum was an artisan, and my parents were once socialists, so I guess I have working class roots.

But most of the trendy 'healthy' foods are stuff I grew up on - I'm forrin!

Highlight of my shopping year is the Boden flog-off sale at the nearby racecourse. Bought some cracking stuff- never buy it full price. (you avin' a larff?) Other benefits include discovering the bobblitude of the jumpers without wasting a load of money - and seeing a load of Boden women all together. I'm a fraud; not nearly glossy enough to be the real thing.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 04/11/2011 22:42

Where are the RL Boden shops? I only ever buy online but would love to have a smash'n'grab session browse in a physical shop. Grin

lambbone · 04/11/2011 22:50

There's one in Walton on Thames

Likesshinythings · 04/11/2011 22:55

The other shop is in North Ealing, next to Park Royal tube. 10 mins walk from my house, dammit!

sue52 · 05/11/2011 09:17

Likesshineythings , I'm in West London next week. Is the Ealing one worth a special trip out to? I've been buying on line for years and I'm quite curious to see what their shop assistants would be wearing.

Towndon · 05/11/2011 10:43

YABU.

According to the Telegraph here, Johnnie Boden is "an unashamed snob, who used to hunt in a bowler hat".

As an anti-hunting leftie, this puts me off buying Boden I'm afraid, even though some of the clothes look OK!

josephinebonaparte · 05/11/2011 10:59

If the telegraph describe you as an unashamed snob you are in a bad way.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 05/11/2011 11:16

Oooh Ealing... I work in Chiswick... this could be useful. Grin

Likesshinythings · 05/11/2011 18:08

Sue, the shop is worth a look. They don't have everything from the website in stock (you can order stuff to be sent there for your visit though), but I've often found things there that are out of stock on-line.
The assistants are all really helpful and never comment on the fact that I am in there embarrassingly often!

NinkyNonker · 05/11/2011 20:01

I do like the fact everything comes in a long length, useful for long leggedy beasties like me.
