to march into the shop manager in my wet, sock soles???

... After owning a pair of boots for four weeks, today in the wet, crazy rain (weather warnings here!) the sole flopped off my boot!

I work not far from the (independently owned) and expensive shoe shop I bought the boots in, so decided to flap down the street and show them the goods.

The woman at the till (employee, not owner) said she could see the sole was hanging off "coming loose" but unfortunately as I didn't have the receipt there was nothing they could do.

I said they could exchange them as they were faulty and not fit for purpose. She said not without the receipt and, if possible, the box they came in.

I told her she'd be lucky if I could find the box and that I paid cash and may not have the receipt on me. She said there was nothing she could do without a receipt and that's the first thing the owner would be asking for tomorrow when I return....

I have came home, searched the house, no joy on finding the receipt but I have found the box! Their price label is on it (just on a normal sticky label, not the shop name or anything!) Surely this is proof that I bought them there?

And... if not fit for use, surely I should get a refund/exchange anyway???

I almost want to walk there tomorrow in my wet socks to prove how much I need the boots in this weather...

Found this:

A receipt is not required for faulty goods although you will usually be asked to produce some proof of purchase, such as a credit card or bank statement. The retailer may try to blame the manufacturer but it is in fact the shop's responsibility to compensate you.

Bank statement.

HauntyMython · 03/11/2011 15:59

Scrap that I forgot you paid cash.

But still, they are not fit for purpose OR satisfactory quality.

worraliberty · 03/11/2011 16:00

You need proof of purchase to prove when you purchased them.

IHopeNot · 03/11/2011 16:02

without the receipt you may be a bit stuffed, does the box have any kind of sticker on it with the shop's name on it, sometimes they price them up with their own lables....

worraliberty · 03/11/2011 16:03

But the OP is claiming they fell apart after just 4 weeks...therefore she'll have to prove that.

IHopeNot · 03/11/2011 16:07

depends how long they had the boots in the store...if they are newish autumn stock it doesn't seem unreasonable that the OP complain as it is only just November.

FairhairedandFrustrated · 03/11/2011 16:08

I bought them on October 7th, they were just new in the shop. It was a Friday, it was payday.. I bought them at 2.10pm. But I have no proof.

The price sticker is just on the box, not their actual shop name.

Just a sticky label with £49.99 on it.

The lady serving that day said they were just new in, so if I can get the same lady tomorrow when the manager is there she might remember me.

It's a small town and I work near the shop.

Are they a make that is sold in other shops (like kickers for example) If it is the shops own brand they should sort it out without the receipt, however if it is a brand that can be bought in other places you probably will have problems

manticlimactic · 03/11/2011 16:12

They're not obliged to refund with no proof of purchase but since you have the box and they were a new line just in when you bought them perhaps they may exchange. But remember they don't have to.

cjbartlett · 03/11/2011 16:14

Yabu
This is why you should keep receipts!

IHopeNot · 03/11/2011 16:19

Do you have the bag from the shop OP?

FairhairedandFrustrated · 03/11/2011 16:23

Am not sure if it's a bran only selling in that particular shop. The box says Zanni & Co on it... I googled them & can't find the actual boot.

It says Cher/Sunny BRN on the box so I guess that's a model and colour.

HAve wrecked every drawer looking for receipt. It's not like me to throw them out, but we decorated our bedroom about 2 weeks ago and it could have been lost then!
