To hope my girls would love to donate their toys

We amassed a load of toys my girls wanted to sell for £35. ( They are worth so much more ) I asked my girls if they wanted to donate to a really worthy cause or for me to donate myself and pay them the money they would have got through selling them. They chose the money. My sister said they are children and dont understand but I am quite sad. AIBU to think they should have said yes

How old are they?

I would expect them to donate the entire amount - maybe a token?

I think it is good to teach children about charitable giving but children are inherently quite self centred (and many adults!)

That should read I wouldn't expect them ...

read lots of research about this....trying to force them can do more harm than good

how old are they?

They are only 11 and 8 but they know all about the charity I wanted to give it to ( Refuge ) and they respect it. They know that the bears would be given as toys and not sold but they said they were saving up. ( saving up for what when the bear might go to some poor child without a home )Even my mum said I expected too much

Brutal honesty... you gave them two options, in both the charity gets toys, but in one they both get some money too. I'm not surprised they took the them getting money too option.

You may have found if the option had been donating or not you might have gotten a different outcome (even if you sneakily "brought" them then donated afterwards)

DD had some toys that she cleared out. She chose some good ones to give some to the Children's Hospital as when she'd been in there she'd noticed there were very few toys in the playroom on the ward and she sold the rest and used the money to buy more toys Grin

Mrs Twinks the other day DD1 really wanted something I didnt want to buy because i thought it was a folly but because she spent her own money on it I have ended up reimbursing her. I think I have been very naive and need to sort out what is important. I had read the thread about xmas boxes before posting this and am a bit confused
