YANBU. We nearly got hit by a girl texting, whilst driving at 70 mph during rush hour last week. She started to drift into our lane as we were passing her and didn't even notice, as her text was obviously far more important than our lives. We were already passed her so i couldn't get her reg. no. otherwise i would have had no hesitation in reporting her

No ecclesvet it is not. You can tell a passenger to wait a moment (I love saying "Quiet, MIL, I need to concentrate) - and you don't generally hold a passenger with one hand during the conversation . . . at least I don't.

And texting is even worse. Should get you disqualified like drink-driving does.

Children in the back of the car can be distracting but I disagree that a normal conversation with another person in the car is as distracting as being on the phone. Driving one handed whilst dialling, texting and talking is far worse.

If they are doing it one my single track lane YANBU. It drives me mad.
They may be far less likely to be caught by the police on our lane than the trunk road, but they are very likely to end up very dead under a very large tractor!

I don't think chatting to a passenger is just as distracting, although it can be dangerously distracting I agree.

When you're talking on a phone your mind is elsewhere entirely, with the person you are talking to, rather than here and now in the car. I would imagine, anyway.

Andrewofgg I think they should have their own special roads where they can merrily chat away on their phones and either learn their lessons from all the near misses or just crash into each other and die. And I have no doubt that they are the same twats who are so self-important that they speed and cut everyone else up, so it will most likely be the latter.

I wish I could remember the actual figures, but I read something along the lines that texting while driving meant you actually had less awareness of what was going on on the road than your average drunk driver. It's as bad, as far as I'm concerned.

This happened to me this afternoon!

Driving home from a meeting on a motorway. A man randomly decides him being in the over taking lane is much more important that me being in the overtaking lane. As i saw him come over I blasted my horn aware I may of been in his blind spot and he gave me the finger with his hand holding his mobile phone!!!

Had to slam on my brakes and beep (whilst fucking and blinding as you do) in the middle of rush hour traffic

I'm pretty sure these people know exactly how dangerous it is yet have convinced themselves that they, personally, have the driving skills and reaction times/brain power to be able to do it safely.

Texting and using a mobile phone whilst driving are illegal.

YANBU Because I live on a little country lane drivers feel they're 'safe' to use mobiles with impunity - I see so many of them - hate it.

Have been cut up twice in two days by totally unaware drivers, and seen others on mobiles. I'm beginning to think I'm actually too arsey to drive myself; can never ever resist beeping at people who cut me up and generally earn myself the finger, and I'm not sure it actually changes much except to make me more annoyed.

Worst one I've ever seen was a bloke steering with his knees and eating cereal with a bowl and a spoon!

I hate this too, with a passion! I wonder if there will be many people coming on to defend it, like there are on the lane hogging thread. I can't imagine it but you never know!

Scarydragon you are right - they are not 'there' in the car. I see them drive past - one hand holding the phone, one on the wheel, swerving slightly.... just not all there.

I once saw a woman reversing on her mobile phone. Straight into a shopping trolley and a car. She got out the car and started going mental at the car owner who was trying to put her shopping away,. She literally wasnt even looking in her mirror!

I had to go and say something cos the other poor woman was nearly in tears. Luckily another person had also witnessed it and between us we bullied her into submission for been a cock.

Actually, I must admit where I am, vans are the worst offenders.
