I bought a Mary Berry Christmas cake mix from tesco earlier in the week when it was cooked according to the instructions it cake out burnt... Yuck. So as my son wanted this cake for his grandad we went and bought another mix started all over again and same thing burnt.... Bloody hell. I have tested my oven and even cooked another mary Berry cake mix and no problems. This mix is not cheap and each mix cost me £10 !! I know madness plus a pack of butter and 4 eggs each time. So am I being unreasonable to expect a refund ????

Chicken44 · 21/11/2011 22:37

hi, i feel i have to put my pennyworth in for all those of us who bought it as we like the idea of baking with the kids but the reality is more breaking than baking Hmm. IMHO this is a good thing, worked well, didnt burn, smells good and had everyhting i needed in the bag. It wont make it to christmas though as the children couldnt wait to ice and slice, i reckon i'll be making another one before the big day Grin

I made this cake yesterday, mine took around 6.5 to 7 hours to cook, Gas mark 1 is very low so cooks nice and slowly, cake came out really well, looks nice moist and smells great, I managed to pick this up for £5 so a real bargain, directions were spot on, all in all very easy and even at £10.00 a good price. Will definitely be buying another. Don't understand how if your oven is on the correct temp. that anyone could burn this cake, after 3.5 hours my cake was nowhere near being cooked.

"Mary Berry xmas cake mix " now Thursday £2 in tesco , such good value. Mine is in the oven now

multipoodles · 21/12/2011 17:45

Did you line the tin well? Wrap in brown paper? I've done Christmas cakes for years and haven't burnt one yet!

A quick fail proof cake here www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1160/simmerandstir-christmas-cake?pager.offset=20

bruffin · 21/12/2011 18:06

I bought the Mary Berry cake for £5 in Tesco and it was in at least 5 hours and if anything is slightly undercooked and most definitely not burnt.
It's not really a packet mix as all that it does is supply the ingredients in the correct weight and you make as normal ie creaming butter and sugar etc

Did you make sure you put the grease proof over the top as well.

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 21/12/2011 18:33

DD made two of these at the weekend (£3 a bag) and they came out perfectly. We made one in a 18cm tin, the other in a 20cm tin, double layer of baking paper and a 'hat'. In the bottom of the fan oven at the recommended temperature (can't remember exactly but it was low, maybe 130 degrees) for about 4.5 hours.

Agree, although it come in a bag, it is not a packet mix. Just the usual ingredients ready prepared and weighed.

Swimminglikeaduck · 22/12/2011 09:54

I bought one yesterday fir £2 reduced in tesco. Looks really good, impressed so far. but, as bought on impulse, realised i dont have a 7cm deep cakepan. Buggger. Really talked it up with my 2 year old too. Can i put it in. 5 cm deep bread (rectangular) bread pan???

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 22/12/2011 16:20

Have you made it yet duck? I just measured the volume of my round cake tin and my loaf tin and they are about the same. You may need to reduce the cooking time slightly as the loaf tin is not as wide so may cook through more quickly.

Swimminglikeaduck · 22/12/2011 16:28

No, not made it yet...but was wondering the same as you. I reckon it should be possible. Would you reduce cooking time or lower the temp?

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 22/12/2011 16:45

Hmm. Instructions ay not to open oven before 3.5 hours, so I'd probably put an extra layer of brown paper around the outside of the tin, and check it after 3.5hrs (poke a metal skewer into the middle and see if it come out clean).

onaplanetwiththexmasfairies · 22/12/2011 16:56

I got one reduced to £3 last Sunday thought it might keep the ds' occupied for a while. it took just under 4 hrs on Gas 1 and has come out fine and Iwe didnt use greaseproof as I hadn't got any. Now iced it looks great ds' spent ages making tiny penguins and christmas parcels out of sugar paste to decorate it , No complaints here.

valiumredhead · 22/12/2011 16:57

This is not the first thread on this so it must be a common theme with this particular mix. Very glad I didn't buy one today Grin

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 22/12/2011 17:05

It's NOT a mix valium. It's just the fruit, dry ingredients and marzipan ready-weighed, with instructions.

And most people's have come out fine Hmm

valiumredhead · 22/12/2011 17:06

Errrr ok, don't get your knickers in a twist satsuma!

MudAndGlitter · 22/12/2011 17:10

Got one of these for £1 earlier.

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 22/12/2011 17:17

Just pointing out what the majority of the posts are saying. Don't knock it till you've tried it.

One pound you say mudandglitter? Bargainacious.

valiumredhead · 22/12/2011 17:25

I'm not knocking anything, I am a fan of making things as easy as possible for yourself Grin

still glad I didn't get one though Wink

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 22/12/2011 17:27

"This is not the first thread on this"

I think it might be - it was started in October :o

valiumredhead · 22/12/2011 17:29

Definitely read about Mary Berry cake MIXES (Wink) burning easily, so I either read it here or FB.

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 22/12/2011 17:30
Xmas Grin

Actually it is a tiny bit misleading to call it a kit as you need quite a few extra ingredients, baking parchment, cake tin, a mixer, and the ability to follow instructions to the letter, as well as make a judgement about whether it's cooked. It's not exactly a Greens cartoon character cupcake mix!

valiumredhead · 22/12/2011 17:30

Just realised it was probably THIS thread I read Blush

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 22/12/2011 17:32

Have some mulled Wine

MudAndGlitter · 22/12/2011 17:32

One pound and another pound for her Christmas muffin mix. Our tescos had crates of them they can't get rid of.

valiumredhead · 22/12/2011 17:38

When I cook my cakes, they take hours on a really low heat, and wrapped in paper to protect it. They usually take 5 or 6 hours.
