To expect a refund from tesco????

I bought a Mary Berry Christmas cake mix from tesco earlier in the week when it was cooked according to the instructions it cake out burnt... Yuck. So as my son wanted this cake for his grandad we went and bought another mix started all over again and same thing burnt.... Bloody hell. I have tested my oven and even cooked another mary Berry cake mix and no problems. This mix is not cheap and each mix cost me £10 !! I know madness plus a pack of butter and 4 eggs each time. So am I being unreasonable to expect a refund ????

Is it normal to bake a Christmas cake for 3.5 hours?

Baffledandbewildered · 30/10/2011 20:50

Baked my christmas cake today and it took about 7 hours but was in the simmering oven of aga so very gentle heat.

I would just slice the top off, feed regularly and then marzipan and ice later.

hermionestranger · 30/10/2011 20:54

SoupDragon my Christmas cake was in for 5 hours yesterday!

squeakyfreakytoy · 30/10/2011 20:58

inject a load of brandy into it.. that will soften it up nicely Grin

Baffledandbewildered · 30/10/2011 21:04

Squeaky LOL may just drink the brandy myself and the cake will then look great

I did make a huge 12" square fruit cake last year for someone and it took 6 hours to cook.

squeakyfreakytoy · 30/10/2011 21:11

seriously, if you inject brandy into it, and keep it in an airtight container, injecting it once a week from now until xmas, it will be lovely and moist, and very very tasty! Grin

Blimey! I am responsible for Christmas pudding in our family. Eldest SIL does the cake so I haven no idea!

Baffledandbewildered · 30/10/2011 21:12

Baffledandbewildered · 30/10/2011 21:15

Xmas cakes are really difficult to get right, so unfortunately I doubt there is a problem with the mix as such. It's more likely the instructions are not suitable for a donestic kitchen. I don't use cake mixes but I guess the instructions should be as clear as a recipe. So I would try writing to the manufacturer for a refund instead.

It's a shame though - you would hope a cake mix would be foolproof, otherwise what's the point!

Baffledandbewildered · 30/10/2011 21:18

It's in a seven inch cake tin and about five inches deep and bizarrely no burning smell the bottom is burnt not the top it's really dry as well like there wasn't enough liquid in the mix strange

I had no such problem with the Delia Christmas Cake-in-a-bag last year. If you get your money back get one of hers instead.

it's probably even more of a rip off but who cares!

Baffledandbewildered · 30/10/2011 21:22

Oh god I give up my husband was looking up cakes on the Internet and thought the mix was from merry berry .... Honestly I ask you !! Maybe this cake recipe was written by MERRY BERRY !

Sirzy · 30/10/2011 21:30

Was the baking tin you used the same size as the one they reccomended? If not that could have been the issue

Bellavita · 30/10/2011 21:30

Noooooo don't ask Bonkers about the Delia one - step away from the mixes!!

FannyFifer · 30/10/2011 21:31

This takes being a shit cook to a whole new level, is it not pretty impossible to bugger it up when using a ready made mix, lol
Don't complain in Tesco, unless you want to forever be known among the staff as "crazy cake woman". Grin

Familydilemma · 30/10/2011 21:34

They will give you a refund as I think they have a policy to do so if not completely satisfied. But this will keep happening. All ovens are not the same and you have to give it a bit less time as yours is prob hotter than thermostat says. My oven is too hot-so I reduce the temp or reduce the time.
