to ask you if you still need to produce I.D when purchasing alcohol?

I was asked for I.D. last night in Sainsbury's while attempting to purchase a bottle of gin to take to a party. As I had not had to produce I.D. since 5 years ago at the age of 36 I thought those days were gone.

The cashier explained that anyone who looked under the age of 25 had to produce I.D when purchasing alcohol. I had to ring my husband to bring my driving licence down as the cashier would not budge.

I was wondering how often does this happen to other people of my age. What can I do to make myself look older?

Disclaimer: this is a stealth boast Grin

Sadly no.

They're more likely to fetch a chair for me to rest my weary pins Sad

PotteringAlong · 30/10/2011 17:38

Being asked for ID at 31 was my greatest day for a long time :o

My mate was on holiday with her marginally younger (but well lived in husband!!!) - she went off to copiously vomit (yes alcohol induced/midday/sun) so he waited outside the hotel lobby toilets.

A lovely (older) lady came out and said 'your daughter has very bad sunstroke.

He was 36, she was 44 Grin she still looks 12, and shes pushing 60 now.

Tee2072 · 30/10/2011 17:39

At 42 I haven't been asked for ID in about 10 years.

The most insulting is the self checkout at Tesco where the option is 'customer is definitely over 25'. Gee, thanks.

Splinters · 30/10/2011 17:39

Did you at least get to watch said cashier squirm when your driving licence arrived?

I'm 27 and still get it, but only from waitrose. I think they're on some super-vigilant booze-drive at the moment. Still, I always have my driving licence with me, so the only embarrassment comes when they look at my foul ID picture.

YourMother · 30/10/2011 17:42

I once got asked for proof of age when buying a birthday cake, bottle of vodka and a packet of condoms. They must have thought I had quite a night planned! Sadly I didn't

TalcAndTurnips · 30/10/2011 17:43

Anyway Rebel - you shouldn't feel TOO smug Grin

HerdOfTinyElephants · 30/10/2011 17:44

I haven't been asked for ID since I was 23 which was a loooong time ago

RebelFromTheWaistDown · 30/10/2011 17:46

Thanks for pissing on my bonfire TalcAndTurnips! Hmm

I'm 32 and got asked for ID last week. It was a good day.

LineRunnerWitchyMother · 30/10/2011 17:46

Poor you. Grin

I'm with Mutt. Five minutes in the company of my ExH should do the trick for you.

Interestingly his new partner's got that glazed-hair thing going on where she's clearly been told to get rid of those greys but not to spend more than a fiver on it. Bless.

pigletmania · 30/10/2011 17:48

I never get asked for ID, I am 34 but must look like I'm 54 Sad.

EvilTwins · 30/10/2011 17:49

I got asked last week when trying to buy a bottle of fizz in the supermarket. Had no ID with my picture on so the embarrassed assistant had to get her manager and they discussed whether I was indeed over 25 and should be allowed to buy the bottle. In the end the manager decided they could risk it. At no point did they ask my age (36). I'm not Blush to say that it made my day. Though the chap behind me in the queue was AngryAngryAngry because it took rather a long time to get it sorted.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 30/10/2011 17:49

A cashier in Sainsbury's told me that they have to ID a certain number of people, but that a lot of people actually get annoyed/offended about it Hmm so she said she asked women in their 30's as they were the only ones that were happy to be asked Wink

A friend of mine aged 27 who lives with her DH and 1yo DD had a doorstep salesman ask when her mother would be back so he could call back Envy

PissesGlitter · 30/10/2011 17:56

almost every shop now does ''challenge 25''

i take quite a bit of abuse when i ask customers for ID so please be nice to the sales assistants :)

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 30/10/2011 18:00

I would imagine that many shops do this as a 'vanity' thing... so that women can have a bit of a stealth boast on MN. If a shop can make you feel good, you'll go back... [hgrin]

Tigerbomb · 30/10/2011 18:02

i have never been ID'ed and tbh I would be stuck if I ever was - no driving license and no passport

Dorris83 · 30/10/2011 18:07

Ah this hasn't happened to me in a couple of years, I'm 28 and I think I probably look it... Although I tell my dh that it's his fault and he ages me ( he's 31 (:-))
I also thnk it might have something to do with what you're buying, bottle of wine, assorted veg, dog treats and washing up liquid probably don't scream 'crazy under age party animal'

(sigh)
