to ask you if you still need to produce I.D when purchasing alcohol?

I was asked for I.D. last night in Sainsbury's while attempting to purchase a bottle of gin to take to a party. As I had not had to produce I.D. since 5 years ago at the age of 36 I thought those days were gone.

The cashier explained that anyone who looked under the age of 25 had to produce I.D when purchasing alcohol. I had to ring my husband to bring my driving licence down as the cashier would not budge.

I was wondering how often does this happen to other people of my age. What can I do to make myself look older?

Disclaimer: this is a stealth boast Grin

I love getting ID'ed - I'll take anything that can make you feel good. I'm 31 now but does happen now and again still Grin

HerdOfTinyElephants · 30/10/2011 18:10

But the point of "Challenge 25", surely, is that if you look as though you are probably/almost certainly under 25 they will ask for ID to prove you are over 18 (sensible). Whereas some shops seem to be interpreting it as if there is the tiniest iota of a possibility that you could conceivably be under 25 they will ask for ID (batshit).

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 30/10/2011 18:12
Envy

I never get asked for ID

PissesGlitter · 30/10/2011 18:16

yes, the challenge 25 is just to make sure you are indeed over 18
and not just an old looking 17

some shops totally take the piss though, makes the rest of us look bad

squeakyfreakytoy · 30/10/2011 18:17

One of my best mates, is 5 years younger than my husband, (she is 45, he is 50), and at my mums funeral, one of my mums friends asked me if my mate was my MIL...

Hysterical laughing from me was not very appropriate, and I did get some strange looks from distant family who were approaching us at the time as we stood waiting for the coffin to reach the graveside..

My mate wasnt too impressed either... Grin

HerdOfTinyElephants · 30/10/2011 18:18

(admittedly, as there is not the tiniest iota of a possibility that I could conceivably be under 25, even a 24yo who'd had a very hard life indeed, this is of largely academic interest to me)

Peanutbuttertuesday · 30/10/2011 18:18

I was asked to produce ID in Sainsburys when buying a DVD for my DS... it was Fantastic Mr Fox... which is a PG... I'm in my 20's, but really!?

jade80 · 30/10/2011 18:20

I am most definitely not under 25 and got asked the other day. The chap wasn't very determined though, I just said don't be daft, look at these lines, and he served me anyway (luckily as didn't have ID on me!)

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 30/10/2011 18:21

It depends on who I'm with, or where I'm buying.

Our local shop has a Challenge 30 policy. Luckily, I went to school with the supervisor, so that's helped a few times. Grin

antsypants · 30/10/2011 18:35

I got asked if I was old enough to take the paracetamol I was buying in sainsburys, but then again the sullen faced assistant did not even glance up at me.

I used to get asked for ID all the time, but bizarrely only after I turned 18 and not before.

PointyBlackHat · 30/10/2011 18:38

I stopped being asked for ID when I stopped dying my hair - being grey has silver (sorry) linings.

happybubblebrain · 30/10/2011 18:42

The last time was three years ago when I was 36. I used to get asked all the time, but my age is catching up with me now.

perplexedpirate · 30/10/2011 18:43

I got asked for ID in a pub a few weeks ago. DH (6 years my junior) didn't. Oh yeah!

mynewpassion · 30/10/2011 18:44

All the time. Now, I just take it out before being asked.

MaureenMLove · 30/10/2011 18:46

The lady on the self check out in Morrisons, looked closely at me last week. I said, 'are you being serious?' She claimed she was, but I think she felt sorry for me. I'm almost 44! Grin

marriedinwhite · 30/10/2011 18:49

Never - but the boys and girls on the checkout often have to ask the supervisor over so they can sell it to me and I tease them mercilessly that they are checking I am old enough to buy Grin and they seem to think I'm bonkers. I'm 50 Sad

bigTillyMint · 30/10/2011 18:51

I am looking forward to having to produce ID to prove I am an OAPGrin

Catsmamma · 30/10/2011 18:53

Dh was decreed "clearly over 25" at the self serve checkout by a supervisor who looked as if she would have to get her mum to come collect her from work!

I remind dh of this often and I laughed quite a lot when it happened.

Dillydollydaydream · 30/10/2011 18:53

I don't get id'd but my husband who is 3 years older than me does near enough every time he purchases alcohol!

KateShmate · 30/10/2011 19:02

I often get ID'd buying alcohol.. is usually the younger teenagers that do it.
I also had to give ID the other day in a large-chain supermarket as I was buying 3 medicines/paracetamol products in one go (2 calpols, 1 tixylix).. the woman very seriously warned me about people taking overdoses on calpol but I did explain that I had 5DC at home poorly...
Stripey - I've had the same thing with the Tesco Man sometimes! Sometimes I will call to husband "Dad! The Tesco man is here!" just to piss him off Grin
I'm 28 and wouldn't really say that I looked 'underage'!

TalcAndTurnips · 30/10/2011 22:20

Beware ladies; the time will come when you'll be asked for ID before you can book your Saga Holidays.

Or buy Super Polygrip

Or suck on a Werther's

Or taking out a subscription for People's Friend

Or purchase fetching fleece-lined zip-up bootees.

Soups · 30/10/2011 22:36

I'm 41 and have been asked for ID several times during the last year. It seems to depend on what I'm wearing and what I'm buying. Every time it's been when I've popped in to buy wine and crisps [hgrin]

PamBeesly · 30/10/2011 22:56

I get asked most times, I'm 27.

Zondra · 30/10/2011 23:08

I was absolutely delighted to be I.D-ed last month in Morrison's.
Normally anything that gets in the way of me obtaining my wine invokes great wrath but, as I'm 36 I was pleased as punch!
Couldn't stop grinning on the way home. :o

startail · 30/10/2011 23:11

I've never been asked (rural pubs and discos turned a blind eye from 14/15).
The only query I've ever had was in a home counties pub, when I was 18, but I'm not sure it counts since I wanted to find a phone not a drink.
