To love fireworks

Will all people who hate fireworks please stop moaning.
They are FUN, no nonsense pointless fun. They make up for the dark evenings and remind us that we were once all children looking forward to Christmas not harassed parents getting stressed by it.

YABU

Fireworks in organised displays, under strict supervision... brilliant, great fun, everyone can enjoy them, safely.

Any idiot being able to walk into a shop and buy what is basically an explosive weapon.... stupidity.

It wasnt too bad 30 years ago, when the biggest fireworks that the public could buy was a selection box with a few small fireworks (and even they are capable of harming people in the wrong hands).. but the ones on the market now should not be available to the general public who have no experience of handling explosives.

I would love to see fireworks banned other than for public displays by licenced people.

worraliberty · 29/10/2011 22:44

I love them too...though internet forums always go into meltdown with people saying they upset their pets and that they should be for organised displays only.

Personally I think people should be allowed to use them in their gardens but they should be issued with a licence in order to buy them.

That would definitely cut down on the amount of teenagers over 18 who buy them for younger kids to chuck about in the street/parks.

Graciescotland · 29/10/2011 22:44

YANBU I love fireworks

serin · 29/10/2011 22:46

I love them too Startail, but I am lucky anough to live in a village and they are mainly let off here at family parties at reasonable hours and at the weekends.

My sister and mother live in urban estates and the kids there run amok with them. They detest this time of year and with reason.

MenopausalHaze · 29/10/2011 22:46

I don't think they should be limited to organised displays - that sounds like the kind of plan Mussolini and Ceaucescu would have liked! There should, however, be much much stricter controls on who can buy them. I always think it the absolute height of twattery when fireworks are let off by dead-eyed chavs in broad daylight!

worraliberty · 29/10/2011 22:47

And I think the licence terms should include conditions such as:

No alcohol for the licence holder

Only licence holder to light them

A certain size garden (as most say they should be 50 metres away)

Stored in a locked cupboard

Actually, very similar to a firearms licence as the sort of fireworks on sale nowadays are huge...similar to mini bombs.

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 29/10/2011 22:48

Yanbu! I totally love and adore fireworks. Cannot wait for next weekend. I will never forget being there on the south bank for the millenium fireworks in London.

Firawla · 29/10/2011 22:50

I love them too but i do think organised displays would be better cos of the danger aspect and also they can afford better ones so its more impressive. So I wouldnt buy them to do in the garden myself as that would scare me, fine for others to do though. but have to say I have found it annoying that I can hear all the fireworks round here but when looking out of window i cant see any, i thought after moving to a place with an upstairs that i would be able to watch other people's fireworks but apparently not!
i remember last year on here people were saying about how its cruel to take children and babies to see fireworks as they will be scared and its so irresponsible etc! some people do go ott with the negative opinions about them i think. hopefully i will get to go see some, including my babies & toddlers too they loved it last yr not scared at all!

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 29/10/2011 22:51

YANBU. I don't especially like them but accept they're part and parcel of this time of year. What I can't hear is the annual whinge. So nice to see a positive thread for a change.

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 29/10/2011 22:51

Can't bear, stupid phone.

worraliberty · 29/10/2011 22:53

OMG I'm laughing so much at 'What I can't hear is the annual whinge'

Ask them to TALK UP A BIT Guillotined Grin

Pixel · 29/10/2011 22:58

I love fireworks too but I can wait for next weekend, that's the point. The only thing I don't like about them is the fact that they will be going off for weeks and it really isn't fair on animals and birds. I had to have my blind pony put down because after days and days of fireworks going off near his field he was in a total frenzy. If it was just one night, as it should be, I could have been there with him but I can't spend every night out for a fortnight. Same with making sure the cat can't get out of the house, he always manages to sneak out eventually when I'm putting the bin out or something and then I have to worry about him.
Apart from anything else the novelty wears off which is a shame, it was much more special when I was little and we knew it was only for one night. We used to go to the big bonfire on Brighton racehill that people had been adding to for weeks with our biscuit tin of fireworks. It was great!
We've had fireworks going off tonight and it's not even halloween yet!

startail · 29/10/2011 23:04

I agree that we do seem to get them for a long period because of people having them for Halloween as well.
Clearly idiot teenager shouldn't mess about with them, but the need to sort antisocial teens will always be with us.
I do feel a bit naughty if I have them late for my birthday, but I always check next doors horses arn't going to mind and try and find quiet ones. No babies to wake and the neighbours cats are semi wild anyway.

worraliberty · 29/10/2011 23:07

Oddly enough I can hear them very loudly now...haven't been many tonight, but why start now at 11pm? Confused

It seems to be a straight run from October through to January, what with Diwali, Halloween, Guy Fawkes, Xmas and NYE.

cantspel · 29/10/2011 23:23

I took my youngest to his traing the other night and over the over side of the park in the skate bit there was a group of 5 or 6 lads ranging from about 14 to 10 years old setting off fireworks. They seemed to have quite a few ranging from crackers to large rockets.

No matter what the law says about the sale of fireworks kids still seem to be able to get hold of them.

CreamolaFoamless · 29/10/2011 23:37

I hate hate hate hate hate fireworks

Stupid nonsensical dangerous bits of scarey tat that have the ability to seriously maim or even kill someone.

They should be BANNED , BANNED for ever

deviladvocate · 29/10/2011 23:44

I LOVE fireworks, we even had a display at our wedding (in November) complete with sparklers!

Hee hee Guillotined - i'm sure the local papers will be filled with the righteous fury of fireworks-haters whining about them very soon....

All together now 'ooooohhhhh' 'ahhhhhhh'

DiscoDaisy · 29/10/2011 23:48

I love fireworks!
What I don't love is the fact that somebody in our neighbourhood started letting them of at 11 o'clock tonight and finished about 10 minutes ago. Angry

CreamolaFoamless · 29/10/2011 23:54

anyone who loves fireworks should be humanley put to sleep .....it's not right

dottynosleep · 29/10/2011 23:57

YANBU I love love love them too Grin

... feels a bit wicked to say so in the face of the haters Wink My kids love them, the pets are unbothered. We only have them twice a year - New Year & dd1's birthday party (Bonfire Night) - in my parents' humongous garden so I don't feel at all guilty!

startail · 30/10/2011 00:10

That they are a bit dangerous and a bit anarchic is the whole point, like climbing trees, swimming in the sea when the waves are too rough, driving a bit too fast on a quiet road in the days before DCs.
Riding horses, or even flattening yourself on a pushbike to go stupidly fast down hill.
We all need a bit of danger and yes we may regret if it goes wrong, but we feel more alive when it doesn't.

I adore huge fireworks displays. I was fortunate enough to have been involved in the Trafalgar 200 celebrations in 2005 - the final Son et Lumiere display was utterly breathtaking - a life-changing experience.

I shall never forget the sight of the night sky lit up for what seemed like hours, and the majestic tall ships proceeding gracefully through the smoke and fire.

MrBloomsNursery · 30/10/2011 00:22

I love fireworks! They're brilliant. My Mum never let us buy any when we were children because it was "burning money", so my Dad used to take me to the shops to buy sparklers every year to make up for no big fireworks.

DD was born in November, so since her 2nd birthday we have a little firework display in our garden for her, and she loves it too.

I don't know why people get worked up over them - yes they're loud, and scary for animals, but just let there be a little fun in the world please.

saitek · 30/10/2011 00:34

i love fireworks in the 30 odd years my parents have been doing them not 1 accident has happened, because there is at least 5 adults to supervise...this year alone there is 10 adults to 6 children under 10

LivingDead · 30/10/2011 00:35

Have never bought any but have been to other peoples fire work parties and I love them. I must admit, I much prefer to go to a big display, it's always a bit stop start with garden fireworks, also I just love the huge ones, very awe inspiring, although dd was a bit terrified at last years display, well the bigger one, the other one we just got soaked to the skin, was surprised it wasn't cancelled.
