AIBU to say when a new thread is started people tend to..................

go with the flow of the first few answers. I have seen this an awful lot lately, a lot of people are like sheep just agreeing with the poster above.

When someone disagrees [like myself at times] a few people will pop in and agree with me but they never stay for long and the thread gets dominated by people with the same opinion and a lone voice...[sometimes me sometimes others.]

If someone actually has an opinion of their own they will say it, they won't go along with the flow if they actually disagree.

But if someone doesn't have an opinion, if they haven't thought about it before, then maybe the opinion they form while reading the tread will be influenced by what other posters have said, not just by the OP.

There are also cases where the OP could be interpreted in more than one way, in which case the initial interpretation is hard to get away from.

I sometimes post my initial "this is what I think after just reading the OP" thoughts and then go back and read through to see if I change my mind based on what everyone els has said (and what the OP says in subsequent posts).

so if you post on a thread, and disagree with the OP, you want people to stick around and agree with you, instead of the OP?

I have found this yes, much easier if you don't agree to move on.

I remember a while ago someone managed to post a thread twice about her child having a different accent to herself and dp. One thread was good humoured, the other just ripped into her. I'm convinced it was because of the responses of the first few posts.

Sure it wasn't that different people are on MN at different times of day, and those different people are in different moods, have different numbers of children annoying them, and have had different amounts of wine?

I have looked at the bed for christmas thread and i agree getting a bed for christmas is crap for a child.

Sometimes I will express an opinion contrary to the general flow.

Sometimes I leave it alone. So for example, I hate CC with a passion and have many detailed arguments why I have reached my conclusion (not the right conclusion people - just my conclusion). But what's the point of me making a load of people shout at me when I believe they are intelligent adults and have seen things in a different way to me? so I just leave that sort of thing usually.

I'm not on here to preach/row/whatever, just here to have a nice time/chat/moan/gossip/goggle/laugh mostly

And don't know to what thread you're referring, but with all the bed comments, I'd just like to say, I'd LOVE a new bed as a Christmas present. Ours is falling apart and squeaks at, er, inappropriate moments but we can't afford to get a new one.... :(

I have to admit I reply to the OP, not the replies. I read the thread afterwards if I think it will be interesting I have time but I'm giving my opinion not agreeing/disagreeing with others. sometimes though I have changed my mind after reading others POV and am usually big enough to admit that.

I generally disagree with the OPs, just down to opinion and my way of doing things being different. I do think though, that my opinion, while valid will not change the OPs opinion, nor do I aim to have it do that.

IME if the OP thinks they ANBU, they may read but not be affected by those that say YABU. Therefore Im not bothered about sticking around. Give my opinion, then go.
