to buy my DDs beds for Christmas

3 DDs, all of them will be sort of in need of new bed in the next year or so (eg youngest needs to move from junior to single etc) and a few weeks ago they all said they'd like Father Christmas to get them new beds this year!
I actually think its a good idea - we're already changing traditions and staying home for Christmas day this year and they have more than enough stuff! I could imagine them talking about "the year we all got beds" when they are adults and obviously I'd get them new duvets, cushions etc.
DH thinks its an awful idea, children should have toys etc (says the man who doesn't buy or wrap any of it and then moans how many toys they've got!)

So AIBU?

SoupDragon · 28/10/2011 07:24

And just how is father Christmas going to wrap those and hide them til Christmas day??

cathkidstonbag · 28/10/2011 07:26

He'll bring them flat packed of course so daddy will have something to do on Christmas day ;)

Lovely idea! Is there any way you could have them assembled in the garage or somewhere (under a tarp), get grandparents to take your DDs out for a walk, then bring them in and make them up with lovely new bedding and a bow for when they get back?

sleepevader · 28/10/2011 07:30

Do it but include some presents too- just not as many.

Think people go overboard at Christmas. We are scaling down. DPs are so ungrateful and if action not taken this year my DS is heading that way.

cathkidstonbag · 28/10/2011 07:33

The thing is its youngest DDs birthday just after Christmas so that whole time turns into a huge accumulation of stuff in one go.

They would of course still get stocking pressies and gifts from grandparents etc.

I think its a lovely idea DD2 got her bedroom done out totally including decorating, furniture, soft furnishings, lamps and rug for her birthday [October] and christmas last year. All she got was her stocking [quite a good one] a jumper and game on christmas morning.

borderslass · 28/10/2011 07:43

This year I'm cancelling christmas.

TheHumancatapult · 28/10/2011 07:48

soup dragon luckily my dc know people but presents and father xmas brings just the one (wipes brow with relief) ours will be staying in their boxes till we move infact will probably not even order till after xmas and get delivered to new house

Animation · 28/10/2011 07:52

Is this a joke?

popadop · 28/10/2011 07:53

You buy your kids what you like..But a bed is hardly a christmas present it is an essential part of life [surely?]

I am with your DH.

lucymr · 28/10/2011 07:54

I remember loving a new duvet cover as a child - this IS a present!

ZonkedOut · 28/10/2011 07:55

It's a good idea, particularly since they asked for them. They'll have stockings and presents from other people to fulfill their toy needs, so I don't see the problem.

popadop · 28/10/2011 07:57

duvets covers are something you would have to buy when you need them.

I won't say anymore but I am amazed that these are considered christmas presents.

SoupDragon · 28/10/2011 07:58

So, your DH doesnt agree with beds as present yet you think he will build them on Christmas day?

besides, a flat packed bed is still fucking enormous which is problematical if your DDs believe them to have come from Father Christmas.

I'm with your DH TBH. Scale back on the Christmas presents, include bedding but just buy the beds.

cathkidstonbag · 28/10/2011 07:58

No it's not a joke :S Why would it be? I have a house full of toys, books, games and really resent buying them yet more stuff.

Youngest DD is in her junior bed, we could get her a cabin bed so she could play shops etc under, middle DD has old single bed- we could get her one of those ones with a bed underneath and eldest DD would love a double (all her friends have apparently!).

Like I said they will all be needing new ones but they won't get nice fancy ones if they get other gifts for Christmas.

Hmmm maybe I am BU? Need to think more maybe.

animation is no joke , my dc are excited about having bunk beds .So excited they not even worried that when we move they are going have to share a room.

Im not a toal grouch they will have some stuff curtsey of poundshop to open and dd has some books that i brought

cathkidstonbag · 28/10/2011 08:00

Soup dragon - he loves making stuff like that! The making of them is not an issue (besides I'm more than capable of doing/helping). And FC bought a desk last year for middle DD (her request) so DDs now believe he can carry anything on his sleigh :D

cathkidston .do it if what dc need it will last a dam site longer than xmas tat

borderslass · 28/10/2011 08:01

Also I remember as a child getting very little at christmas, but we did get essentials.

popadop · 28/10/2011 08:01

When a DH buys his DW a slow cooker on here for her birthday there is uproar.

I don't understand how a bed is something to get excited about.

lucymr · 28/10/2011 08:02

I don't know your financial circumstances and why should I, I don't want to know. But as a general point, I think kids sometimes have far too much spent on them at Christmas, and if they have mountains of toys already, why add to it? If these children have asked for beds, then there should be no problem in buying them beds and the accessories. DOn't feel bad about it at all. There is too much presure to buy EVERYTHING and sometimes people can't afford it. When I was a child and still believed in Santa. I used to get some presents from him and my parents used to give me a Beano annual as the present from them. Looking back, all my friends had lots of presents from Santa and lots from their parents also but I never realised this and never thought that my parents were mean.
Having a new bed, duvet cover etc and a new look for a bedroom is a lovely present and they will get more from grandparents etc. Lovely.

Kayzr · 28/10/2011 08:03

Yeah I think it's a great idea. Get them presents as well. Maybe a few bed related things. They've said they want new beds so what's the difference between asking for beds and asking for a new Nintendo DS
