To feel like I'm the only person in the world who hasn't had a holiday this year?!

I've recently returned to work after a years maternity leave. I loved maternity leave, but money was tight, and going back came just at the right time financially. We had a long weekend in Spain in June 2010 but haven't been away anywhere since. My OH and I would LOVE a holiday abroad with our 13 month old, but, as we live in a 1 bed house, our priority is saving so we can hopefully buy a new house next year. We both work long hours, so are constantly tired, but we are healthy and happy so can go without a trip abroad for a while.

SIL, who, having married BIL a few years back and moved to the UK from Eastern Europe, who doesn't work, who does nothing with her time whatsoever, who was taken to Australia this year, and several trips back to her home country, and is off to Spain this month, paid for by BIL made a comment the other day saying " I simply don't know how you survive without a holiday". Grrrrrrrrrrr.

You aren't the only one.

I'm sure someone will be along to say that haven't' had a holiday since 1988.

TheFeministsZombieBride · 27/10/2011 21:04

I haven't been holiday for 3 years! The last holiday we had was a weekend in a caravan in North Wales! I haven't been on a plane since I went to Dublin for my honeymoon 12 years ago and haven't been abroad since I was 15.

Such is life when you're pretty much living on the breadline all the time.

Mandy2003 · 27/10/2011 21:04

I didn't have one this year, last year we went to Pontin's. So that's 2 years without a holiday then Grin

fivegomadindorset · 27/10/2011 21:05

We had 3 days, 2 nights away doing Longleat and Legoland this year that has been it basically for nearly three years.

Harecare · 27/10/2011 21:06

Didn't have a holiday this year either. Really miss taking a week altogether.

CJ2010 · 27/10/2011 21:07

I haven't! DC2 was born in Aug, but tbh the thought of actually planning, packing and then actually going on the holiday with two DC's under two, just leaves me feeling exhausted and stressed so I'd rather stay at home!

Tortoise · 27/10/2011 21:08

We didn't have a holiday this year either. Last one was last summer.

In the last 8 years we've had 3 nights in a caravan at the seaside.

It was brill!

staylucky · 27/10/2011 21:13

Oh I know how you feel, 2003 was my only holiday as an adult and will prob be the last one in the forseeable future. Tbh it's not something I expect as a right every year, for some they are failing miserably somewhere if they can't.
There's plenty to do day to day in reality is there not?!

Nat38 · 27/10/2011 21:14

Are we talking holidays abroad as the only "proper" holiday?? We go to Hunstanton, UK every year in a caravan on a family site. I`ve been on 2 weekends away with my mum & sister to Paris & Barcelona in the last 10 years but thats it. DH last went abroad with me & his parents in 1989 which was his 1 & only holiday abroad & kids have never been abroad & they are 11 & 12!!!

WitchesAreComing · 27/10/2011 21:18

I had an actual holiday for five days in Spain nine years ago when DD was three. I spent most of it sleeping so it was a bit of a waste of money really.

Avenged · 27/10/2011 21:20

Nope OP, you're not the only one to not have a holiday this year. I haven't even had a camping holiday in a tent for at least 3yrs, never mind a decent trip abroad.

pozzled · 27/10/2011 21:39

Depends what you mean by holiday. OP, while you were on maternity leave did you not have a single night away? I had a wonderful holiday this summer, 5 nights staying with my MIL and FIL, it was fab. Oh and we've had another 2 weekends away when we stayed with friends or relatives and another night in a B&B. I'd consider all of these holidays, so I'm lucky to have had so many. Smile

My last holiday abroad was my honeymoon in 2005. I don't even have a passport, but we're thinking we may go to Eurodisney in a couple of years.
