AIBU to let my kids take time off school to go hunt saboteuring?

I (genuinely) used to take time off as a child to do this, and have very fond memories of laying wrong scents, protesting and generally causing a nuisance to the local hunt.

AIBU to let my kids do the same? The sport only happens a few days a year, so it is hard to fit in around school.

Loopy as your name suggests.

DooinMeCleanin · 27/10/2011 14:32

In the interest of fairness I must say YANBU to want to take them, but it would be unreasonable to interupt their eduction for this purpose, even though it is much worthier cause than allowing time off to hunt and kill defenceless animals.

You must do it at the weekend or just ignore me and go anyway

Rhubarbgarden · 27/10/2011 14:33

Plenty of time for them to get involved when they've grown up and left school. I was a sab when I was at university, and some of the stuff that went on I wouldn't want a child to see. I was quite upset and disturbed by some people's behaviour even at 18. While I commend your cause, I really don't think it's appropriate for children.

worraliberty · 27/10/2011 14:33

Yes YABU

You gave birth to children...not foxes therefore your kids come first.

Oh and for the record I hate fox hunting

Oh and also for the record you're trying to hard imo to start a fight here

Probably should have slipped the 'keeping kids off school' thing in another post...say 20 or 25 posts in.

Tuts does no-one know how these things work?

catgirl1976 · 27/10/2011 14:34

yabu and you know you are. Its not a competitive sport and can be done at weekends. Same as the hunting. Pro or anti was not relevant to the question on the original thread.

Also in the interest of fairness - if it's something you enjoyed and you think it would be more beneficial to your DCs than a day at school then no, YANBU.

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 27/10/2011 14:35

When did the government reverse the ban on foxhunting? Confused I never heard about that.

chicletteeth · 27/10/2011 14:35

I have a rule never to get involved in threads about threads, but you really did make me laugh out loud.

[hgrin]

Oh and of course YANBU, or at least no more than the other side...

LoopyLoopsPussInBoots · 27/10/2011 14:41

Oh but Worra, this is nothing about the hunting debate, and all about the school...

oh. thread about a thread?

which thread?

Hullygully · 27/10/2011 15:03

More than R.

MonstrouslyNarkyPuffin · 27/10/2011 15:09

YABU. I personally agree with hunt sabs, but even if I didn't, I still wouldn't allow time off school to pursue a sport, hobby or moral righteousness.

Earthdog · 27/10/2011 15:16

Sounds like you don't know what you are talking about! Hunting happens most days of the week, except Sundays. My pack hunts a 4 day week. You are crazy to let your children go unless you want them to get a criminal record (our sabs used to get regularly done for assault/aggravated trespass/public order offences). Also, anything involving horses, lorries, 4x4s and illegal behaviour is inevitably very dangerous. Also 'our' sabs used to hit the hounds with staves and chuck bottles of antimate at the horses amongst other things so hardly a good example. Get them to campaign for causes that matter instead of worrying about vermin being killed by one method rather than another.

DoMeDon · 27/10/2011 15:18

YANBU - my boss has time off work for union things, my colleague has time of for being a school govenor, your DC will not miss much in one day off school.

Why do people seem so much more het up about the odd day off school nowadays? Confused

HandMini · 27/10/2011 15:24

Why do you want them to go? Because you enjoyed it when young? Because you think they'd enjoy it? Because you think it will teach them something? Because they are keen and asking to go?

I don't think it's a suitable environment for children, so YABU, but I'm interested to know why you're so keen for them to go. Can't you discuss with them your and their views on hunting if you want to educate them?

catgirl1976 · 27/10/2011 15:25

Earthdog - speaking of not knowing what you are talking about.......foxes are not classified as vermin in the UK.

Butkin · 27/10/2011 15:29

Why would you want to take them out of school when hunting takes place from September to March and most hunts go out on Saturdays and of course there are school holidays as well. YABU to consider doing this and that is before I even contemplate you doing it at all.

OldMumsy · 27/10/2011 15:32

They aren't hunting foxes anymore so you are just being a stroppy idiot.

Earthdog · 27/10/2011 15:33

If they kill my lambs and chickens they are vermin! Hecate, the 'ban' hasn't been repealed, but it is a shoddy piece of legislation which has made it impossible to interpret or enforce.

LoopyLoopsPussInBoots · 27/10/2011 15:34
  1. Yes 'they' are. Some of 'them'.
  2. Stroppy? I just want my children to have a varied education and sport life, what's wrong with that?
  3. Not into the danger aspect, don't get involved with anything bad.
  4. This is hypothetical, my children are babies.
  5. This is a wind up.
