AIBU to think that swearing just lowers peoples opinion of you. I just dont get the whole swearing just to fill out a sentence thing. Is it just me?

OP posts:
CreamolaFoamless · 27/10/2011 15:55

ShirleyKnot I am and I'm not

I do find it 'cringey' when alot of threads here are littered with swear words for no obvious reason.

It does seem to be at times you have to throw a random , fuck or cunt, into a post to be 'cool'

I find it embarressing in a way because 'ok mumsnet lets you swear, but that doesn't mean you have to swear just because you can , if that makes sense?

I don't mind swearing , but it does make me think less of people if they swear just for effect rather than using the swear word in the correct context.

When I first read some of this forum and read the language of some posters I was a bit Confused,

I imagined loads of white linen clad middle aged women sitting around a huge pine table in their diningroom , smelling scented candles and getting pissed at 2.30pm on red wine, while their children were off at boarding school and hubby was 'working in the city' for the week typing 'Fuck and Cunt' into their ipad thinking we were being daring and dangerous

I'm probably wrong with putting the consistant swearers into that group but that's they impression I get.

You don't have to swear to get your point over

ShirleyKnot · 27/10/2011 16:04

Yes, yes. You kind of spoiled the point you were trying to make by calling people sad fuckers though.

Were you being "cool" or "ironic"?

What context is acceptable for swearing?

Oh and I am laughing at your image of Mnetters!

CreamolaFoamless · 27/10/2011 16:20

Well let me explain

Say for instance someone says something that really annoys you e.g 'David Cameron has introduced wonderful policies and I think he should be knighted for services to Britian' it is acceptable to tell the poster to 'get a fucking grip'

however if someone says 'I have just put too much fucking basil in my bastarding lasagne and the cunting bechamel sauce is curdling ,and it is going come out of the oven smelling like a nuns fanjo' that is Unacceptable and said for mearly for cool swear points and nothing else

ShirleyKnot · 27/10/2011 16:30

Well, I don't see many posts along the lines of your second example to be honest.

I think the OP would disagree with you that telling someone to "get a fucking grip" is acceptable.

And therin lies the rub - either swearing is OK (for me it's fine - obviously) or it's not. If you really don't like swearing in any way shape or form then MN is bound to grate somewhat - but I diagree with you Creamola that some swearing is worse than others, just because you have an arbitary "line" drawn.

MrBloomsNursery · 27/10/2011 16:32

Yes, it's a disgusting habit. I don't think highly of people who swear.

KatieScarlett2833 · 27/10/2011 16:33

Cheap and Coarse sums me up to a T.

Erse.

AbsolutelyBloodySpiffing · 27/10/2011 16:34

I fucking love swearing I do. No need to swear at the kids though - they'll sharp come back with a colourful vocab after a couple of weeks at school.

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 27/10/2011 16:36

It must be.... at least a week since the last sweary thread.

I swear a lot on MN so that I don't swear at home. I don't agree with people swearing at their kids either but on MN? Tis just words on a screen. And it's big and clever :o

usualsuspect · 27/10/2011 16:37

I don't give a toss if someone swears tbh

They are only words

MillyR · 27/10/2011 16:37

I think swearing is fine, with the exception of blasphemy.

SixStringWidow · 27/10/2011 16:39

It offends me more to hear someone "swearing on dd/ds life"

You can all tell me to fuck off if you like, just don't swear on your childs life.

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 27/10/2011 16:40
KatieScarlett2833 · 27/10/2011 16:45

Fusty

Itsjustafleshwound · 27/10/2011 16:51

I agree with MillyR - I don't mind swearing but HATE blasphemy...

RubyLovesMayMay · 27/10/2011 16:54

Sometimes there is/isn't a need for swearing but fuck knows the difference
Work, Children, parent and respected people/relatives, formal situations are all a no-no when it comes to for me

But I tell you what

I couldnt give a shit whether it makes a person think any more higher or lower of me. I swear when I feel the need and when I feel appropriate. I dont speak for the sake of other's approval

KatieScarlett2833 · 27/10/2011 16:58

I only swear on here because of the catsbumouth effect.

All these threads just encourage me.

I like to picture the disapprovingness in my head, now I can add "Bet she thinks she's cool" to my amusement. Who the fuck says "cool" anyway? Grin

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 27/10/2011 17:18

KatieScarlett - fusty? Hmm How do you know? :o

KatieScarlett2833 · 27/10/2011 17:32

Was visiting ancient convent last Tuesday (really) ..... now I'm not SAYING it was decades of fusty fanjo, but........

CreamolaFoamless · 27/10/2011 18:21

It's not cool

It's not big

It's not clever

just makes you look a bunch of trampy chavs if I'm honest

itspeanutbutterjellytime · 27/10/2011 18:27

No there isn't a need, but if you don't like the threads that contain it; don't contribute and close the thread.

Swearing in front of children is another matter, but some of you really need to spend your time judging more worthy people!

Somehow putting "ancient" in front of fusty makes it even worse....

I love a good fuck, me.

CreamolaFoamless · 27/10/2011 20:04
