giving me a CN for 5 rolls of wallpaper (40 quidish) and having lost proof of purchase. Have they changed their policy as have not had problem before.? WHat use is it - we overpurchased to be on the safe side, got 30 rolls for our three storey staircase.

I'm sure that's been their policy for years.

To be fair the main problem is you lost your receipt. Therefore YABU

SoupDragon · 27/10/2011 10:39

They don't have to refund you at all. issuing a credit not whe you have no proof of purchase is fairly standard - you might have nicked them off the shelf for all they know.

IHeartKingThistle · 27/10/2011 10:40

They never take things back without a receipt.

vickibee · 27/10/2011 10:41

I certainly have not taken them off the shelf. They are all intact and unused. It has taken several months to get the big job done and have searched high and low for the recepit but cannot find it

YABU. Shops are under no obligation to give you anything back at all unless something is faulty.

A credit note without a receipt is standard practice.

Grumpla · 27/10/2011 10:45

YABU. A CN is more than they have to offer!

Make sure you put the CN somewhere safe Grin

it doesn't do much for customer relations - goodwill etc am only asking to swap it for some other wallpaper not a refund.

OP posts:
vickibee · 27/10/2011 10:50

sorry typo they won't even give me a CN or exchange, not asking for £ back

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 27/10/2011 10:50

If you read my post carefully, vicki, you will see that I did not accuse you of taking them off the shelf. Given you have no receipt, there is no way B&Q know that they had not been stolen and you wanted to exchange them for cash.

LittleMissWoodscommaElle · 27/10/2011 10:51

Without proof of purchase you arn't entitled to anything.

KatieMortician · 27/10/2011 10:52

Well if you've got a CN you can swap it for more wall paper! YABU.

You say it's been months and you expect them to take it back when there is no obligation either legal or moral on their part and you're annoyed because they offer you a credit note? You have lost all perspective.

loveglove · 27/10/2011 10:52

YABU.

Have you an old bank statement with the purchase on it, or a credit card statement?
TBH if you did the job over months they aren't obliged to do anything as there's also a time limit even with a receipt.

SoupDragon · 27/10/2011 10:53

Oh, right. So "giving me a credit note" actually meant "not even..."

it still stands that, without proof of purchase, they don't have to do anything.

KatieMortician · 27/10/2011 10:53

Ok I see you have not been offered a credit note. Still think you're being unreasonable.

LittleMissWoodscommaElle · 27/10/2011 10:54

The time limit is often 30 days becasue of the turnover of stock.

dreamingofsun · 27/10/2011 10:54

i have a relative who used to work for them and you would not believe some of the dodges customers do. i'm not for one minute saying you are trying anything on...but it was a real eye opener and i can see why they'd have to be careful

vickibee · 27/10/2011 10:54

2 months but it is still in stock and everything - I was advised by their staff to overbuy and bring back what we didn;t use. I can see their POV but would really grateful if they could do a swap

OP posts:
vickibee · 27/10/2011 10:56

what sort of things do you mean dreaming?it wud be v diff to stwal wallpaper you can't exactly stuff it up your jumper!!!

JaneBirkin · 27/10/2011 11:06

Look for bank statements that show the date of transaction, photocopy and takle it with you. That is a proof of purchase. They could look it up on their system if they could be arsed but I am guessing they are not arsed.

Yanbu.

AfternoonsandCoffeespoons · 27/10/2011 11:12

Why should they be arsed, JaneBirkin? They are under no obligation to issue a refund/CN even with a receipt legally. If OP knew she would be returning some of the wallpaper, it was her responsibility to keep hold of the receipt.

AfternoonsandCoffeespoons · 27/10/2011 11:14

Although I do agree, that the transaction on a bank statement may be accepted as proof of purchase, although tbf it would only prove something was bought in B&Q, not necessarily (sp?) wallpaper.

JaneBirkin · 27/10/2011 11:22

I know, but I think they ought to be arsed because they told her that she could bring back the excess, and unless they specified that this was within 28 days, they shoudl really be trying to sort this out for her.

It's not like she's given them some implausible story. She's bought masses, they have made a lot from her custom and she only wants to swap them with something else, so B&Q lose nothing.

It's just poor CS.

JaneBirkin · 27/10/2011 11:24

You could even say they have tricked her into buying something she didn't need, so they';ve made more money out of a very common situation (ie not knowing exactly how much you will need) and she's now left with a load of useless wallpaper.

It really depends on what they said at the time but tbh I think she has a strong case.

nickelbabe · 27/10/2011 11:25

they don't have to do anything at all.
in the realms of the trading standards act, and consumer rights, they can tell you to swing it and leave them alone.

When we bought wallpaper and paint, we kept our receipts with the items while we decorated, then took them back after - we only expected a CN, and that's what we got.
