giving me a CN for 5 rolls of wallpaper (40 quidish) and having lost proof of purchase. Have they changed their policy as have not had problem before.? WHat use is it - we overpurchased to be on the safe side, got 30 rolls for our three storey staircase.

Rosie - why, though? And once you'd got away with it, presuming you had a really small room to wallpaper (or maybe a feature wall?) why the feck would someone go back and try and exchange it for another sort of wallpaper?

It's an unlikely scenario isn't it? Particularly when it fits perfectly with their own suggestion to buy too much.

Sirzy · 28/10/2011 08:12

So months after buying something with no receipt or proof of purchase you go into a shop wanting a refund. I can't blame them for not doing it.

B and q will happily refund when you have the proof of purchase, if you lose it then that's your problem not there's.

JaneBirkin · 28/10/2011 08:16

2 months, and she wanted to exchange it for the same thing but in a different colour/pattern.

As suggested by B&Q.

JaneBirkin · 28/10/2011 08:17

This is pointless

Sirzy · 28/10/2011 08:18

But they do it with receipt. Sorry if she can't find it then that's her problem not b and qs

JaneBirkin · 28/10/2011 08:22

Yes it is, I just think it would be better if they did it. That's all. They don't have to but they should.

LoveBeingAWitch · 28/10/2011 08:23

letting the cashier scan it and then go out into the carpark with the trolley while DP pays -strangely enough, their card then gets declined

Workshy - ive not heard that one before pmsl

HelloShitty · 28/10/2011 08:29

Not forgetting insider theft, the booty of which then gets flogged at boot sales or whatever.
I think people are being very naive to expect unquestioning refunds when there are so many dishonest people about.
I've always had excellent service from B&Q.

YesTisMe · 28/10/2011 08:33

why should they? you have no recipet, they have no obligation to refund you.

JaneBirkin · 28/10/2011 08:36

Hetty I don't think the OP works for B&Q so insider theft isn't likely in this situation.

I'm not saying they ought always to issue refunds or even exchanges. But in some situations it seems (I hate this word) churlish not to.

They wouldn't have to apply the same rule to everyone.

Sirzy · 28/10/2011 08:44

And there lies the problem. How much would that cost the company?

YesTisMe · 28/10/2011 08:45

they would have to apply the same rule to everyone tho.
person 1 in que, i have 5 rolls of extra wallpaper but no reciept i want a refund.they moan and say there is no way they could have stollen in as its too bulky. they say ok do the refund..
person 2 i have this flymo i dont want this model, i have no reciept. the employee then tries to say no sorry no reciept no refund but they have heard person 1 gettin a refund with no recipet. que and argument for the employee to have to put up with.
1 rule for all is the only way to make it even slightly fare.

( yes i worked in a shop with a no refund with no reciept policy, had 1 man come in with a boxed microwave + reciept, said it didnt work. i open the box to check the item, to find no item. customer said he had put in in the dump as it didnt work but still wanted a refund.)

JaneBirkin you come across as being very very naive. I take it you have never worked in retail? The amount of people who try it on are immense. And unfortunately the people who are genuine customers get tarred with the same brush.

OP yabu you should have kept the receipt.

blackoutthesun · 28/10/2011 09:47

sorry jane but if you had your own shop then i could tell you now, it wouldn't be trading for very long

no way am i saying the the op nicked the wall paper but you'll be very suprised at the tricks people do to steal stock

JaneBirkin · 28/10/2011 10:27

Yes, I have worked in retail!

And the shop I mentioned yesterday, who had all my details on their system, has been going for many years and still is thriving.

Discretionary refunds or exchanges don't have to be done in front of loads of people. They could be discussed away from the queue so as not to offend those less deserving of understanding.

Sorry if I sound naive.

sorry typo they won't even give me a CN or exchange, not asking for £ back

Everlong, here

JaneBirkin · 28/10/2011 10:29

I haven't worked in large scale retail though. Maybe that's different.

Sirzy · 28/10/2011 10:39

A system used when selling large things like prams can't be compared to wallpaper!

I work for another DIY store -not B&Q
if it was something we sold we would exchange if it was still a line we stocked, even up to 6 months

_

Guess it can be done

PigletJohn · 28/10/2011 11:10

This "buy extra and bring it back" offer

I'll wager £5 that if you look at the poster describing this offer, it doesn't say "no receipt required"

Anyone want to take me on?

PigletJohn · 28/10/2011 11:14

or to put it another way

"Our returns policy - terms and conditions

Please keep your receipt for anything you buy from us. It will ensure we can help you, if you need to bring something back."

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/10/2011 11:25

JaneBirkin - the OP knew she was buying more wallpaper than she needed, and would be bringing the excess back for an exchange/credit note. So why didn't she make sure she put the receipt away in a safe place? It's not like it was a surprise that she was taking the item back, and surely to goodness people know that they need proof of purchase if they are going to be sure of getting an exchange/credit note.

We file receipts for big purchases in one section of the filing system, and receipts for day-to-day shopping (the weekly food shop, books, cinema tickets, petrol - that kind of stuff) is put in an envelope marked with the month and year, and those are kept for 6 months minimum (depending on how often we clear out the paperwork) - so we can be pretty sure of putting our hands on a receipt if we need it.

JaneBirkin · 28/10/2011 11:27

I already looked at that John.

I'm not disputing that they're not obliged to exchange. I'm just saying it's lousy customer service.
