To wonder if anyone has bought anything worthwhile in Primark ever?

I used to find the odd gem in Primark; a new wool wastecoat that has lasted for 5 years; a red cocoon coat that I loved but sold on ebay as I needed the cash and some decent basic undies.

I went in there today and there was nothing but one ok fair isle jumper that was £20. I didn't buy as it was a bit tent-like. Is it me or is Primari getting more expensive and worse quality? I also have concerns about their ethics and iot is like shopping in a giant air craft hanger. I would rather spend more for a more pleasant retail experience even though I am skint and in need of decent knit wear.

Their PJs are awesome, both for adults and children. Children's underwear is fine too.
I hate their tights and leggings. I bought some recently and could not get them over my arse! Granted, I'm not exactly skinny but I did buy the right size, they were just a really odd cut.
I always used to buy their slippers and end up regretting it as they'd fall apart within 2 wears.

bruffin · 26/10/2011 19:19

My teenage dcs love their tiger fleece sleepsuits.
Also got Ds a suit, was pleased as he is tall and thin and the jackets came in different lengths, so he wasn't stuck with a jacket that was huge on the chest to get the length.

aquashiv · 26/10/2011 19:23

I still have an electric cerise faux jacket going strong from 1995 used for parties and occassions where I might not want to get lost in a crowd.

I dont have much patience with the place. I find its always heaving with very slow moving types who I want to give a quick shove to move them along.

BOOareHaunting · 26/10/2011 19:33

squishy thanks. I'll let my friend know. We are thinking of heading there for warm fleecy PJ's for the caravan - no excuse now we know they do the tights too. Emerald is perfect - It is the Emerald City afterall (if you know Wicked!)

We are not taking the DC's away for the weekend so may even stretch to some Primarni pamper stuff. Wink

Ifancyashandy · 26/10/2011 19:34

Recently? Well, I've got their Super Skinny jeans in colbalt blue, electric pink and wine. I've also got a gorgeous Fair Isle cardi a couple of weeks ago. it's pink, blue and cream so goes with all the above jeans.

I got a lovely dress in the summer - white 'skater' dress with a print of Paris around the hem. Always commented on.

I've got a pair of tracksuit bottoms that I wear to the gym that are about 3 years old and are still absolutely fine. Still in shape and great colour.

I got asked about a red and zebra print scarf the other day by an assistant in another store. I said it was 'Primarni' and she thought I said Armani. And believed it was from there (I did correct her!).

And absolutely YY to the pj bottoms (cotton, not fleece for me) and plain Lycra and cotton vests. They're as good as M&S and half the price.

My baby stuff is about 50/50 Primark and on it's 3rd child. Shrinks a bit more than M&S or Next but I just use the next size up iykwim. And it has been washed a lot.

Towels and duvet covers are good. Larger size bras very good.

MackerelOfFact · 26/10/2011 20:20

Another vote for towels. Bought some bath sheets in there as a stop-gap to last a few months, but 2 years later I still haven't replaced them as they're still so thick and fluffy! Will probably just get more Primark ones.

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 26/10/2011 20:22

I bought my 10 year old dd a straw shoulder bag in there this summer. And some beach towels, which are ok. Have never bought clothes in Primark.

bigTillyMint · 26/10/2011 20:27

My DD loves her super skinny size 6Shock jeans and the hoodie I got her the other day.

I agree that the selection varies massively depending on the location of the store.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 26/10/2011 20:51

I have a couple of bath towels, with kids characters on, that are just starting to wear out after a good twelve years of use.
I used to love the baby clothes, onesies with the poppers underneath, babygros and little outfits too - they didn't need to last long because babies grow so fast, but I had some that did three of my DCs and 3 or 4 other peoples DCs and were then passed on again and still looked perfectly nice and wearable.
I have bought loads of accessories and bits n bobs of makeup and stuff too over the years, mainly for stocking filler type gifts for people and have always been very happy with the quality and price. It's not posh or luxurious, but that doesn't mean everything they sell is chaep tat either.

loopsylou · 26/10/2011 20:58

I recently got a beautiful faux fur jacket for £20, (in love with it), then went to nearby designer store (to browse and get depressed by lack of money to buy gorgeous clothing XD) and found IDENTICAL jacket for £80! I mean it, the ONLY difference was the label, which said {shop name} instead of primark. :o Was dead chuffed.

*Can't remeber name of shop for the life of me Blush

LikeABlackFlameCandleBNQ · 26/10/2011 21:01

I get all of my pjs from there. I get really lovely black silky trouser socks from there for work. I have a grey blazer bought about 3 years ago still going strong, and a £2 cross-body bag that I can;t part with.

I also tend to pick up a pair of pumps, wear them till they are falling apart (every day for about 4 months) then walk in buy new and throw old ones in the bin outside the shop. Max £6 a pair.

I get bikinis for holidays from there.

I wouldn;'t buy jeans, as I am an odd shape, t-shirts as I dont like the feel of the material, and clothes for DH, as they are cut for the squarer shaped man and he is beanpole shaped.

Anything else goes!

doinmummy · 26/10/2011 21:05

PJ's and bras - 'Sexiest Ever Plunge Bra'...awful name but fab fit.

MrBloomsNursery · 26/10/2011 21:18

I bought a fake leather type bag from there 2 years ago for £3 and it's still good as new; and I used it day in day out for about 1 year for work and general purposes and it never wore out or ripped. Even had a few women asking me where I bought it from as it was so nice and soft!

Oh I got a furry throw and 2 knitted type throws from there about 2 years ago and we're still using them in our living room.

Out of their knitwear, only the 100% cotton garments last well. The acrylic ones are a 1 day wear type job.

All of DD's underwear and tights are from primark. I only buy socks from GAP or Debenhams.
Womens sheer ankle socks are brilliant. 4 for £1!

Wow....it must seem like I'm a primark addict. i do go to other shops too.

happydotcom · 26/10/2011 21:21

Only jeans. I'm tall and hate the 'low rise' ones ( and maybe childbirth has left me a little chubby!)

Towels are great quality and inexpensive.

marriedinwhite · 26/10/2011 21:29

Again the towels - used to buy a bale to take on holiday and cheap bath towels and leave them behind at the end of the holiday to make room for wine! It was also cheaper than paying extra to hire towels in France. Holiday was cancelled three years ago and the towels are still going remarkably well.

backwardpossom · 26/10/2011 21:31

I bought bigger sized cheap t-shirts when I was pregnant - that was worthwhile. :)

happyinherts · 26/10/2011 21:34

Pj's that have lasted 3 years and still going strong.

£2.50 jogging bottoms bought for teenager for school sports instead of £15 recommended ones. 5 years of constant use

Also recommend bath towels

cerealqueen · 26/10/2011 21:34

I have a beautiful flowery coat that I bought three years ago, everybody thinks its vintage and the same for a chiffon blouse with a tie at the neck which I bought earlier this year.

You really have to search (as things just get moved from rail to rail) and take your time. The good stuff goes really quickly, especially if there has been a feature in a magazine.

molly3478 · 26/10/2011 21:41

yeah practically my entire wardrobe!

MCos · 26/10/2011 21:44

I got some really nice towels there, and also lovely brushed cotton quilt covers for kids beds (with snowmen, and cupcakes). Both have worn and washed v. well. Fleece PJs another good buy, as many posters agree. Kids stuff not too bad, and I've found the odd gem for myself.

I think the sizes are geared towards teenagers.

ddubsgirl · 26/10/2011 21:52

my cushions i have on the sofa, lovely and soft :) kids stuff is crap sizing have to get mens stuff for 2 older boys but cant get my twins anything kids stuff too small but mens small is too big.

inmysparetime · 26/10/2011 22:02

I got a fleece dressing gown about 10 years ago in primark, it's still going strong and toasty warm after all that time.
