To wonder if anyone has bought anything worthwhile in Primark ever?

I used to find the odd gem in Primark; a new wool wastecoat that has lasted for 5 years; a red cocoon coat that I loved but sold on ebay as I needed the cash and some decent basic undies.

I went in there today and there was nothing but one ok fair isle jumper that was £20. I didn't buy as it was a bit tent-like. Is it me or is Primari getting more expensive and worse quality? I also have concerns about their ethics and iot is like shopping in a giant air craft hanger. I would rather spend more for a more pleasant retail experience even though I am skint and in need of decent knit wear.

Long sleeved thin tops for layering are a bargain, I love their skinny leg jeans and black jeggings. I bought a load of tights the other day and they're fantastic, microfibre ones in funky colours that fit extremely well, don't feel like they're falling down and have washed well.
My favourite black jumper is from there too but that's probably about 3 years old.

BOOareHaunting · 26/10/2011 18:24

I don't venture there much, nearest one is in the city and it's like a zoo! but once/twice a year I take a visit and stock up!

I buy PJ's for DS and I, tea towels, bedding if needed, knickers and sometimes some cheap shoes. (I bought some croc type shoes for £2 3 yrs ago!).

I also find this time of year it's great for stocking filler type gifts. Nailcare stuff, hair stuff, costume jewellrey, slipper socks etc. I am on a tight budget this year and I'm doing christmas hampers with homemade stuff and a few cheap useful things - I expect I'll use Primarni - or the upmarket poundland as me and my friend call it. Wink

MatureUniStudent · 26/10/2011 18:24

I have some wonderful Primarni scarves - problem is, so do a lot of other women I meet. I love their slippers (showing my age). The boys love their "hoodies". But their trousers dont last as long as (Boden - said quietly). Gloves, hats etc - all Primarni. I try not to think about the child labour that made the clothes as I dress my children...

Creamcake1 · 26/10/2011 18:24

Yes I bought 2 bath sheets 2 hand towels and 2 flannels about a year ago, the best towels I've had still lovely soft and fluffy, well worth the buySmile for the quality I got I wud have paid twice as much elsewhere.

MistyMountainHop · 26/10/2011 18:26

I think its gone really downhill, as in, the quality is the same (ie not really that great) but its more expensive for the same shit Confused

squishy Did they do green tights? [hgrin] My friend is doing 'Elphaba' again soon and in these temperatures would rather green tights than green body paint and bare legs that need to be washed off in the shower in a cold caravan late at night!!!

EvilVampireFrog · 26/10/2011 18:28

Knickers. Knickers with SHE-RA on. Hell yeah.

Oh, and a nice coat, and some vairy naice skinny jeans. Grin

ENormaSnob · 26/10/2011 18:32

Warm pjs for me and the kids. Last years are still going strong and have washed well.

Shorts and tees for the kids have lasted well.

I love their scarf selection too.

Phee96 · 26/10/2011 18:36

Chalks - I got a tub of coloured chalks for about£1.50 for a dozen (I think). They kept my two toddlers amused for hours in the garden. They lasted really well, even when left out in the rain, and didn't break easily like all the others we tried. Must go back for some more soon. They weren't really what I was expecting my best Primark bargain to be [hsmile]

josephinebonaparte · 26/10/2011 18:38

Pjs
Boys cords
Long sleeved tops
Flannels and towels

I got a yellow hi-viz lightweight jacket that I wear for riding on the roads, it's really well made, has lots of zipped pockets and you can unzip the sleeves to make a waistcoat for the summer so I've got lots of use out of it and it still looks like new. It cost £14 and a very similar jacket in a shop a few doors along was over £50 so I'm very pleased!

WhereCamelsFearToTread · 26/10/2011 18:43

Knickers and jimjams!

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 26/10/2011 18:44

I got myself a nice, knitted jumper dress the other week (multi-coloured stripes, very FrothyDragon-ish, according to BF)

Accidentally stuck it in the wash with my jeans though, so currently trying to get dark denim dye out of the thing. :(

WhataTreat · 26/10/2011 18:46

I got a gorgeous coat in there the other week, reduced to a tenner!!! I am a seasoned primark fanatic though, and a natural bargain hunter. . .and I have a love of jumble sales. . . a happy concoction!

My friends often wear clothes from there that don't look cheap, and receive tons of compliments for them.

Pj bottoms for a fiver as well. I have lived in them since purchasing last week!

VivaLeBeaver · 26/10/2011 18:47

I got DD a lovely faux fur hat with little ears today.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 26/10/2011 18:56

I bought some fleecy sleepsuits for my boys the other day, pyjamas all seemed OK but couldn't find any other boys' clothes that I liked.

Also very cheap hair elastics and a pair of trousers for me - I was so amazed that they were long enough that I had to buy them (I'm tall, standard trousers in most shops don't fit).

lovecat · 26/10/2011 18:56

I bought a top there last month and was asked by a label-queen colleague if it was Missoni! And got a nice linen dress in the sale, but it is rare that I see anything in there that doesn't look cheap n' nasty.

Staples I do buy there are skinny jeans, fleece pjs & socks are what I usually get there. And yy to their costume jewellery. Cheap way to jazz up an outfit.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 26/10/2011 18:57

I used to buy loads fom there but it has gone downhill lately. The brum one is and always has been like a big boot sale, but now it isn't even worth having a rummage through.

I now only go for pj's, socks, tights, knickers, bras for dd, bed sheets, towels, bags, gloves abd belts lol.

TheFeministsZombieBride · 26/10/2011 19:00

I bought a black blazer in there about 2 years ago for £15 and it's still going strong. Nothing for me recently though. But I do rate their kids clothes (mostly) their jeans are just as good quality as the likes of Next or M&S now (I actually think the standard of clothes in Next and M&S has really gone down recently). Some stuff has lasted long enough to become hand me downs for dd2.

purplewerepidj · 26/10/2011 19:04

I have four within about a 20 mile radius (fairly rural area)

Southampton is always full of tat and looks like a jumble sale

Boscombe is amazing! Not very big but stocks the right stuff and is staffed enough to keep it in a fairly tidy state

Bournemouth is ok

Poole is awesome, three floors Grin but I don't get over there very often...

SecretNutellaFix · 26/10/2011 19:05

I got lucky a couple of years ago with some beautiful fluffy soft throws. Bought them as Christmas gifts for my Mum. One she still has- a nice grey one. The other went with my dog on her final journey to be cremated last year as she had insisted on sleeping on it always.Smile

Clothing wise? I have never been of a size to buy, so can't comment.

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 26/10/2011 19:06

BOO yes, I got some fab emerald green tights in there. I think they did a dark green one too.

earlyriser · 26/10/2011 19:09

I second the homewares being great. Got a pure cotton duvet cover a few years back and it has been washed hundreds of times and still feels crisp and new like. Also got a bed spread thing and it look luxurious but only cost a tenner!

Soojie · 26/10/2011 19:09

Well, my husband absolutely loves his white fleece all in one Elvis suit that I got for £3. And I am sure there are loads more Elvis impersonators out there that are just as happy.
