To wish parents would put their babies in the car rather than leave them in the trolly whilst they unpack the shopping?

Have just been to Tesco. I was reversing out of my space when I saw in my rear-view mirror that the car immediately to the right of the car I was heading towards had a young child still sat in the trolly. Not only was she still in the trolly but they had the bit that she was in facing out into the road rather than closest to their parked car. I have parking sensors in my car so there was no chance of me hitting the trolly or the child. But I was inching closer and closer. I couldn't wait as I was holding up traffic from both sides. I just kept thinking why don't they get her out and put her in the car but instead they just scowled at me!

Honestly, some parents have no brains!

roller girl er, no I use a pay at pump if I have DS with me. I wouldn't leave a baby in the car on his own. And if I wasn't at a pay at pump then yes, I would take him with me. My child, my choice.

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 25/10/2011 18:59

I think you're smarting, op, because they gave you a dirty look.

FreudianSlipper · 25/10/2011 18:59

i often keep ds in the trolly while putting the bags in the car as i will take him with me when i put the trolly back, i am always looking around and i expect those who are driving to be looking too, i thought it was something you do while you are driving be it forward or reversing but apparently not. thanks for the advice op i was not aware that there were such stupid people around who do not bother to look where they are driving

itspeanutbutterjellytime · 25/10/2011 18:59

black yes, you should give way if you are reversing since you do not have right of way. The people already on the road have right of way.

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 25/10/2011 18:59

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 25/10/2011 19:01

Oops, double post.

Sirzy · 25/10/2011 19:04

At a petrol station I use pay at the pump or more often than not go when I dont have DS with me. If I had no other choice I would take him in with me.

I am yet to encounter any problems leaving DS in the trolley, same as in my 10 years of driving I have never come close to running over a trolley with a child in as I am observant enough to see them before I start moving!

GypsyMoth · 25/10/2011 19:04

I left dd in the car today alone....and?

hangon · 25/10/2011 19:04

OP what car do you drive? I will make sure I put my baby in the car first if you are around. Yes I take my baby in with me when I pay for petrol.

blackoutthesun · 25/10/2011 19:04

thanks itspeanutbutterjellytime

so the op shouldn't have been reversing anyway?

benandhollyandgaston · 25/10/2011 19:04

Oh yes, good point black. OP, you should have gone back into your space until it was clear.

Rhubarbgarden · 25/10/2011 19:06

I leave dd in the trolley while I unload because if I leave her in the car while I return the trolley, she sets off the alarm. And as someone else said, I have yet to master the art of stopping the full trolley roll away while I'm strapping her in. I wouldn't, however, leave the 'child end' pointing out into the road. That is a bit daft.

skybluepearl · 25/10/2011 19:07

I hate leaving my baby in the car while i return the trolly to get my pound back. It takes a few mins and the cars been really hot this summer so i prefer to load shopping into car with baby in trolly. He has never been in the way of moving cars but i expect cars to be looking out for people and not to barge thier way about.

ZonkedOut · 25/10/2011 19:07

I'm not that keen on defending the OP, I don't really like the tone of the posts, but I think some people are missing the point that the OP wasn't driving dangerously or fast, but someone else in that position might have been. Some supermarket car parks are tight for space and there are always idiot drivers around.

squeakyfreakytoy · 25/10/2011 19:12

... a gust of wind can soon have a trolley rolling away if the shopper isnt paying much attention.. dangerous with a child in it. Cars do reverse into objects in car parks... quite regularly..

A handbrake should be pulled on hard enough so that a child cannot release it.

To me, putting the child in the car first would be the safest option, and I have never yet heard of a child being stolen from a car while a parent takes a trolley back.

Rollergirl1 · 25/10/2011 19:15

I pointed out in the OP that it wasn't until I was reversing that I noticed a child in the trolley. I didn't see them when I got in my car and they were not in my view in my rear mirror when my car was stationary and I started reversing. But thanks for everyone for assuming that I am a bad driver.

I still think there are more dangers to a baby being in a public place surrounded by moving cars then being strapped in to their car seat in a stationary car. But I guess we will just have to agree to differ.

blackoutthesun · 25/10/2011 19:17

but the op shouldn't be reversing until it was clear anyway

so its a bit rich for the op calling these parents brainless

thisisyesterday · 25/10/2011 19:17

so, people should put their kids in their cars in case they get run into?

I wonder why the title of this thread isn't "AIBU to think drivers could use their eyes/mirrors instead of running over my very visible baby?"

YABU op.
I leave mine in the trolley otherwise I'd waste even more of my life in the supermarket. strapping 2 of them in the car, unloading the trolley, taking them back out, putting them backm in the trolley, returning trolley, dragging 2 toddlers across car park to put trolley back

honestly, some posters have no brains!

GoodAndBluts · 25/10/2011 19:17

What is the world coming to when a parent parks in a normal parking space. They should park in a P&C space for goodness sake! Thats what they are there for, careless parents who want to leave their DC in a trolley!

blackoutthesun · 25/10/2011 19:20

''I didn't see them when I got in my car and they were not in my view in my rear mirror when my car was stationary and I started reversing''

so you should have pulled back into the space until it was clear

MollieO · 25/10/2011 19:21

If you put the baby in the car then how do you return the trolley? I'd always unpack the trolley, wheel it and baby back to the trolley stand and then take baby out of trolley and carry back to car. There is no way I'd leave a baby or child unattended in a car.

NinkyNonker · 25/10/2011 19:24

I did exactly this today. The trolley park was a fair walk away, I wasn't going to leave her behind.

beepbeep · 25/10/2011 19:24

Surely if I put my children in the car first, I would then have to leave the children in the car, unattended, whilst I put the trolley away? Or should I get them back out at that point and take them with me?

Far safer to have a child in the trolley, in my view and with my whilst unpacking shopping & returning trolley than leaving unattended in a car.

BoffinMum · 25/10/2011 19:24

They were in the right, you were in the wrong. You shouldn't have been reversing, according to the highway code.

jugglingwithpumpkins · 25/10/2011 19:25

Haven't read whole thread but I agree with you Rollergirl

And I think people should be much more careful where cars are concerned generally. They're bloody dangerous things.

  • Hate people driving too fast in car parks for starters.
