to be so angry at this and just don't know how these people can live with themselves?

I have just read this and am so speechless and angry that people like this in the world exist. This poor little girl :(.

I don't think they've fully explained the situation behind this at all!

There have been a spate of occasions in China recently where 'good samaritans' have been charged with harming those they've helped, which has scared people off from helping. Obviously people should still help, but I can't help but feel the daily mail have, as usual, used shock tactics without any intelligent discussion of the actual situation.

However, is there a chance the Daily Mail is choosing to report this as part of their drip-feed of 'aren't foreigners barbaric?'

When we were in China, we were told by our tour guide that people who have knocked someone down with a car will often reverse/drive over them to kill them because they would be responsible for the victim's medical care indefinitely, so killing them is, in effect, less hassle.
In lots of countries, not just China, trying to help an accident victim can end up with you getting arrested and /or sued, it happened to a colleague of DH in Germany, he saved a woman's life by sticking his fist in her groin to stop her bleeding to death and her parents tried to have him arrested for sexual assault. Bonkers.

There is a difference between justifying something and saying here is a possible explanation for why something has happened.

Justifying something implies that you are saying it is ok that it happened. I don't think she was saying anything of the sort!

It is a fact that people in china get sued when they have tried to help someone. It is well reported.

Since that is the case, it is reasonable to suggest that there is a possible reason why people didn't help.

It is not saying it is ok. It is saying that these people possibly had in mind all the stories of others who DID help someone in need and ended up getting their arses sued off.

If that is happening - it may explain why people would walk by.

It doesn't mean it is morally ok to walk by.

There's more going on around the world than tea with the vicar.

The naivety displayed on mn astounds me. :(

I wasn't trying to justify, just saying there is more to it! They just put a picture up and went 'ooh isn't it terrible' without trying to look any deeper.

I don't think other media have reported it in the same way Moaning, the guardian had (imho) a much better piece here

YANBU to think its awful, YABU to think that people like this do not exist in the world, that little girls do not die every day, and to inflict the DM on us.

No the little girl died this morning. To be fair it's been all over the media over the past couple of days, not just the DM. The girls mother was close by but the little girl had wandered off. It really is so sad.
