Listening to the "travellers" who are being evicted at long last and one of them said her sister has been beaten so badly by the police that she " now has no face left".
Another said the police set fire to a caravan.
These sound rational trustworthy people not prone to exaggeration.

Those screaming racism... how can one be racist towards travellers? They're not a different race. Race is based on physical attributes. They're white european.

mumsamilitant · 19/10/2011 14:54

I don't give a frig, they could be a community of Ooompa Loompa's for all I care. They knowingly broke the law and are costing us taxpayers a heck of a lot of money. They are bloody wrong.

moogster1a · 19/10/2011 14:54

people like to see them as a different race because then they can pretend that they are being victimised racially. Not that they are lawbreakers living there illegally and should have been kicked off years ago as anyone else would have been.
I agree that I don't understand how I can be being racist against people of exactly the same genetic race as myself.
Before the pedants start, I'm referring to white, european, ( in fact shared Irish origin

I am Irish . In the last two years 5 traveller families have moved into my estate , Their children have more manners than the Local kids around here . I have also found that if their kids do cause any trouble their parents are much more willing to sort their kids out .

Themumsnot · 19/10/2011 14:59

Not racist bigots then, just nasty bigots who are prejudiced against a disadvantaged minority group who are marginalised and discrimated against. Thats so much better.

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 19/10/2011 15:01

two2many "5 traveller families have moved into my estate"

In that case, they're not travellers are they? They're regular people who like to romanticise their past/heritage. If these people are travellers they should have hitched their caravans to their cars and continued to travel, staying in places a few days at a time and moving on.

If they wanted to security of roots, and steady schooling for their children, they should have bought/rented houses and paid their bills and taxes like the rest of us have to.

And anyone that thinks they've been unfairly treated, why don't you offer your address to the support groups? I'm sure you could squeeze a few caravans onto your driveways/gardens, couldn't you?

two2many · 19/10/2011 15:07

Desperatelyseekingpombears Yes they rent out the houses in my estate for a year or so then move on . They often have camper vans parked in their driveways etc . They call themselves "Travellers" which is why i referred to them as such .
The point i was trying to make is that i have first hand experience of these people and have learned not to judge a book by it's cover .

Themumsnot · 19/10/2011 15:09

I live in the UK, Pombear. Does that mean I'm not allowed to call myself Irish anymore? Hmm

DesparatelySeeking - In that case, the 'travellers' at Dale Farm aren't really travellers either then are they? Hmm

Except I have just seen them on the telly reffering to themselves as travellers, and they clearly are travellers.

GypsyMoth · 19/10/2011 15:12

Well why aren't they travelling then?

HeresTheScaryThingBooyhoo · 19/10/2011 15:15

"They're regular people who like to romanticise their past/heritage."

what do mean when you say 'regular people'?

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 19/10/2011 15:16

themumsnot I don't see what my post had to do with you calling yourself Irish. 'Irish' isn't a race either. It's a nationality. If you were born in Ireland, you're Irish.

slave Yes, I am saying that the Dale Farm 'travellers' aren't travellers. Because they're not travelling. They can call themselves moonmen on telly if they want to but it doesn't make it true.

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 19/10/2011 15:17

Heres oh sorry, was that not PC enough? Do I need to specify that for the purpose of my post 'regular' meant living in a house for an exchange of money/services to a landlord/mortgage company? I assumed common sense would have dictated that.

Sexolette · 19/10/2011 15:18

Best thread title ever!!

HeresTheScaryThingBooyhoo · 19/10/2011 15:18

ther are ILT, just at their own pace rather than one you would like them to travel at.

you could ask the same of settled people who move house. why aren't they settling then if they call themselves settled?

HeresTheScaryThingBooyhoo · 19/10/2011 15:21

i didn't know regular was a term given to people who owned or rented homes, i would have thought they were known as homeowners or tenants. Hmm

Sexolette · 19/10/2011 15:22

I agree that it is not racist to talk derogatively ( is that a word?) about travellers.

However, I have known then to be pretty racist, bigoted and let's not forget sexist.

Sexolette · 19/10/2011 15:22

Them!!

FunnyHaHaPeculiar · 19/10/2011 15:24

Not racist bigots then, just nasty bigots who are prejudiced against a disadvantaged minority group who are marginalised and discrimated against. Thats so much better.

lol i love it when the racist card gets played - because you know then the arguer has nothing else to fall back on

marginalised and discriminated - lol - didnt they say that about the rioters as well.

FunnyHaHaPeculiar · 19/10/2011 15:26

You enjoy people being made homeless?

how can they be homeless when they are travellers with caravans? surely thats the whole point.

GypsyMoth · 19/10/2011 15:29

I don't see any caravans, and the traveller children are born there and have never even travelled. How odd!

FannyFifer · 19/10/2011 15:32

Watching the posh, rent a protester twats get tasered was entertaining though.

HeresTheScaryThingBooyhoo · 19/10/2011 15:34

where is the rule that says you must have a caravan in order to be a traveller? Confused
