AIBU to wonder whether this is a designer baby?

SIL was disappointed last baby was a girl.....DB just announced she's expecting again and just had 12 week scan. He said it was a boy. I was surprised he could know so early and he added, "we're pretty sure it is" and when I spoke to her she said she was actually 13.5 weeks. Crossed my mind that given she was upset last time, they might have selected the sex. AIBU to be thinking this or is it possible to be sure so early?

AFAIK nowhere in the UK will do any kind of sex selection unless there are medical reasons.

I believe you can tell the sex by blood test at about 7 weeks - they look for foetal cells in the mother's blood and check for Y chromosomes. It's possible they got this done privately?

well whatever it is, its a baby.. and so long as they are happy, its really none of your business.. I would have thought it too early to be absolutely sure, perhaps they are just hoping and trying to convince themselves.

If you see your brother and SIL at all regularly YABU to think they must have chosen the sex since you would probably have heard of them leaving the country for treatment.

No I don't see them regularly as I live abroad. They do travel abroad together regularly as she is not from UK...

I had CVS at 12 weeks when expecting DS4...... 3days later I knew for certain he was a boy....... Test not done for that reason of course. So yes, she could know for certain.

As everyone else says, but also we had a scan at 14.5 weeks (to check for a condition DS2 has), and could see DS3's boy bits very clearly! So you never know.

However I'm not sure about sure. I hope they're not setting themselves up for a disappointment

You can get private scans or amnio or other test that will show the sex.

Just how exactly do you think they might have selected the sex when it's illegal in UK? Surely, the fact that 51% of babies born are boys and 49% girls it can't be a huge surprise they're expecting a boy?

I think based on what you've said YABU and a bit weird.

AFAIK they haven't had any tests. Of course it's none of my business, I am working on my nosiness, but have lapses now and then

I was certain dd2 was a boy at that stage. By the 24 week scan she definitely wasn't.

I once met a lady who was certain her child was a boy. When baby was born it was a girl. She seriously told everyone that she'd had a craving for ice cream during pregnancy and that had changed the gender of the baby to female.

Actually I didn't know it was illegal in UK. Haven't lived there for many years.

My 12 week scan showed my last two were boys, therefore the technology has been around, and mainstream for at least 16 years (we werent allowed to know with the eldest)

A decent sonographer can tell the sex with a very good degree of accuracy from 12 weeks. There's a "nub" that points one way or the other. There are US websites where kindly sonographers look at uploaded pics and give their view. My consultant told me at my scan at 12 wks and he was right.

Hollywood, I don't really know as they have live in nanny so I don't often see them together....I guess it's new technology then. I had a scan at the same hospital and asked whether baby was boy (thought I saw it) and the sonographer refused to be drawn. However that was nhs and she goes to private wing. Maybe they're more helpful there!
