To be appalled at the length of time my neighbour leaves her washing on the line

A whole lineful will appear and then it'll be out for up to two weeks at a time. It can dry, get wet and dry again several times over and be slapped against a concrete wall in the wind. Items only seems to get picked in as and when they're needed and by the end of it's time out there it'll be hanging on by one peg, with longer items dragging on the grass or hitched up against the fence/wall.

There's no real reason I should care - it's not my family's washing after all - but I just can't bear to see washing (something which by definition is supposed to be clean!) being treated like that.

What are some people like?

OP posts:

My pegs live on the line and get fed to the lawn mower when they give up and die from exposure.

It's like a natural life cycle.

stubbornstains · 14/10/2011 20:33

Do you live next door to me OP? Was it YOU who crept into my garden and rehung all the sheets and towels more neatly on the line, thus creeping me out massively?

Stropzilla · 14/10/2011 20:38

You're my neighbour, aren't you? I'm sorry. We get on well, so I promise to get my washing in on a timely manner.

TiaMariaandDietCoke · 14/10/2011 20:42

someone rehung your washing stubborn? that is seriously creepy!

why shouldn't you leave pegs on the line? Confused
I put washing out and leave it there until it is dry, often for days. i work full time and am not here to dash in and out between showers. Downstairs neighbours, who are both at home all day, bring each other's washing in when it rains, but leave mine out.So, there it stays. Smells good when I bring it in though.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 14/10/2011 20:50

Skanky? Really?

Turning your pants inside out to extend their wear is a bit skanky.

Leaving clean washing outside in the clean air is not skanky.

What on earth do you think is going to happen to it? I used to have a friend who had to re-wash washing if it got rained on, clearly she was insane.

Thank you for reminding me of the word 'skanky' though which I haven't used since I left youth club.

TheBestWitch · 14/10/2011 20:52

How d'you know she hasn't brought it back in and washed it again if it's been caught in the rain and pegged it back out? Have you memorised the positions of the clothes?
You also say that everyone else around your way takes their washing in as soon as it's dry. It sounds like you spend a lot of your day observing peoples clothes lines!

carriedababi · 14/10/2011 20:53

my dad said that the other week about his neighbour.

i was [shocked]
at my dads noseyness
of course he blamed it on the woman of the house, not the man, Hmm

notlettingthefearshow · 14/10/2011 20:53

It is weird ... especially considering in 2 weeks I've done many many loads of washing. No way I could wait that long for mine!

FessaEst · 14/10/2011 20:55

"everyone else comments on it too"

Good God, where do you live again? It sounds like a fab place to be.....

Seriously though, I only clicked on this thread as I thought you might be talking about me, but I don't have enough clothes to leave a load on the line for 2 weeks. Even i would give up on the game ditziness describes and bring it in in that time.

YANBU. Grim. And anyone who says you should get out more ... They should stay in more - and brush up on their hygiene.

WelliesinJune · 14/10/2011 21:11

And not re-washing clothes after they get rained on?! Nice ... I love that musty not-dried-properly smell on a person.

PureBloodMuggle · 14/10/2011 21:15

But, but, but....

How does the family manage to get through that long without needed the items of clothing? Unless they have loads of clothes of course.

WelliseinJune not-rewashing clothes after they are rained on isn't the same as as not drying clothes properly. So why the heck would they be musty?

MrsJasonBourne · 14/10/2011 21:15

I've got to say, it is wierd.

Surely you only hang washing out when you're fairly certain it's going to be a nice day? Otherwise it's a bloody waste of time to hang it all out only to have to grab it all back in again when it starts to rain.

Wash it overnight, hang it out first thing, get it in by lunchtime when it's almost dry and then it's still got a bit of dampness in which makes it perfect for ironing.
[oh god i'm my mother-in-law emoticon]

Seriously though, has she got anymore clothes? Does she only wash stuff every two weeks? My machine goes on every bloody day and so does the tumble dryer.

WelliesinJune · 14/10/2011 21:19

Musty as in "I've wet my hair in the shower but not washed it" or "my clothes have got soaking wet in the rain and then dried inside" musty. If you wet without washing = musty. Same as not letting washed clothes dry properly. But probably not very well put.

spiderlight · 14/10/2011 21:27

I leave my pegs on the liine. I had no idea this was Frowned Upon.

PMSL at the Christmas Eve washing though :o

Yama · 14/10/2011 21:33

Are you me?

The only thing I rant about is how long the neighbours (woman with grown up children) leave their washing out for.

I mean, why? Why the fuck hang out a washing only for it to get rained on once, twice, thrice?

It makes me angry that they make me notice and care.

So, no op - YANBU.

WelliesinJune · 14/10/2011 21:42

Exactly. What makes me laugh is people who call OP judgey. Really?! These people are so rank they can't spare 2 minutes to bring their washing in - god knows what their kitchen/bathroom looks like, probably a hell-hole of MRSA but hey, live and let live. Maybe they like wearing musty clothes covered in bird sh&t and bits of foliage. If not, they can always dump the clothes in their front garden next to that broken sofa.

Rollon2012 · 14/10/2011 22:34

I laughed irl
