To wonder how a school can allow their girls to dress like this?

I only have 1 ds of 18 mo so am probably very out of touch but here goes.

I picked up dh from his weekend on call at queens hospital in Romford. On the way I was stuck in traffic outside a school and was frankly shocked by how short the girls skirts were. They were actually bum skimming. They also were all wearing over the knee black socks so a vast quantity of thigh was on show.

Am I just an old prude? I felt sad tbh that they felt they had to dress like this probably to fit in. Why doesn't the school impose a below the knee rule?

I used to push the uniform boundaries A LOT at school. I went to a girl's grammar (I'm 28 now to give you an idea of the time). I rolled my skirt up as far as I could, we wore polo shirts in years 10 and 11 (no blazers or ties). I also wore navy Converse trainers, lots of gothic make-up (as it was the 90s), and hippy jewellery...along with my army bag with all the names of bands I loved drawn on in permanent marker. Oh yes...I was SUCH a rebel. My school did pull me up on it from time to time but they generally just let us get on with it.

They didn't like it when I dyed my hair bright pink. It did make me a school legend though.

As it stands, I got good results and did well in school...nowt wrong with a bit of gentle rebellion in my book.

Is no one else on this thread going to admit to tarting up their school uniform? It's a phase, it's boundary pushing, it's sexual experimentation. It's also completely normal. Not worth getting a blue rinse and a sweet sherry for. quite a few of us have Alouiseg check back on my last few posts. Smile

GetOrfMo1Land · 10/10/2011 15:32

My senior school never gave a monkeys - as long as you wore black skirt or trousers, and a white shirt, they never cared. Hence I went from long duster skirt and DMs in year 10 when in grunge phase, to spray on flares and high heeled platforms Hmm when I got into disco music in Year 11. What a twat etc.

Alouiseg · 10/10/2011 15:33

I like the point someone made earlier about uniform being a "good" way to rebel. If you're concentrating on sexing your tie up you won't be questioning why you're at school in the first place.

I know what I mean anyway Confused

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 10/10/2011 15:34

GetOrf - My best mate wore a long skirt and DMs. Our little group was called "The Eyeliner Gang" by the other students (hides and cringes with shame!). I was just very sullen and played the guitar...so I thought I was uber cool.

Alouiseg · 10/10/2011 15:35

EcclesCakes yes I saw you did, I'm on the mobile app and I couldn't be arsed to name check you - sorry.

stepawayfromtheecclescakes · 10/10/2011 15:35

but the look is typically FAR more sexed up now than in the late 80s are you sure about that Annetterofit or is just that you are a bit older and more Hmm now, i seem to remember being very 'tarty' when younger and slimmer and I am 49!!

GetOrfMo1Land · 10/10/2011 15:36

I looked like Ally Sheedy in the breakfast club. Listened to Morrissey and Nirvana all the time.

Then cheered up and started wearing tight trousers and wiggling my hips as I walked Hmm

stepawayfromtheecclescakes · 10/10/2011 15:36

Grin Alouiseg we talk sense I think

stepawayfromtheecclescakes · 10/10/2011 15:38

Grin @ getorfmyland ohhh memories

GetOrfMo1Land · 10/10/2011 15:39

I laughed at the people who were into the Shamen and called them the Cheesy Quavers, and was brutal about those who like Take That (still am).

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 10/10/2011 15:39

I worshipped Kurt Cobain from the age of about 8...in fact, I begged for a guitar for my birthday because of him.

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 10/10/2011 15:40

LMAO @ Cheesy Quavers - we used that one too. When I was at school, it was all about Grungers Vs Townies.

thats what i meant

AnnetteProfit · 10/10/2011 15:44

no
definitely.
i know - i work in a school. there ws never any tits out with us.

AnnetteProfit · 10/10/2011 15:44

also in the 80s skirts might have been short but not as short as now, and things were baggy. in fact in 1988 LONG skirts were a sign of rebellion

GetOrfMo1Land · 10/10/2011 15:47

That is pretty shocking re the tits oot brigade.

We thought we were rebels wearing aertex shirts instead of cotton ones.

Alouiseg · 10/10/2011 15:48

I was at work in 1988! No one to rebel against then.

BrittanyBelle · 10/10/2011 15:48

i live in france and have 2 teenage DDs and there are no rules about dress and basically anything goes - make-up, jewellery, heels, cut off jeans, strappy tops etc. i am Shock a some of the outfits i see.
fortunately my girls are quite reserved and i do try to insist on some rules even though there is no support from the school. According to DD2 she is "the only girl in the school" who isn't allowed to wear nail polish

They think it's hilarious that i had to wear a shirt and tie to school up to the age of 16 but they spend more time in the evenings deciding on their outfits than they do on their homework.

i wish we had uniforms here it would save a lot of money, time and anguish

Alouiseg · 10/10/2011 15:49

I'm sure tits have got bigger on girls over the years? When I was at school only a handful of girls were large of nork. The rest of us had to stuff socks into padded bras.

Malificence · 10/10/2011 15:50

I'm surprised that girls wear skirts once they're out of infants school tbh.

DD didn't wear a school skirt after the age of 8, at high school (2001 - 2006) it was trousers and black Rockport boots, the same as the boys. Any fashion/individuality was shown by the bags and stationery used. The sheep all had Jane Norman bags for some inexplicable reason.
The only school around here where the girls wear skirts is the private one and they wear hideous kilts , even the very strict Catholic school near my house lets girls wear trousers now, there is absolutely no need to make girls wear skirts.

GetOrfMo1Land · 10/10/2011 15:52

I would much rather wear a skirt and tights than a pair of trousers, far more comfortable imo. I agree that skirts shouldn't be banned out of hand. There is something very dodgy about people saying that they don't want girls to wear skimpy skirts, and so they will ban them completely.

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 10/10/2011 15:53

We weren't allowed to wear trousers. They introduced them at my school the year after I left.

AnnetteProfit · 10/10/2011 15:57

us too - no trousers. out local girls school is still the same.
im always suprised girls wear those stupid skirts for playing,. say hockey.
