AIBU to make my indoor living dog sleep outside in a kennel now that she's moulting everywhere?

No valhalla, browns are not so popular and the majority of breeders actively avoid producing them. I had no preference for colour when we got her but I have to say that I prefer the browns now. I know several and they defintely have a bit more personality about them Grin

And no, I inagine there isn't much fruitloopier than a young GSD. We meet a young GSD bitch on our walks most days and my pair just look at her like she's from another planet as she bounces around them like she's on springs Grin

I have possibly the laziest Sprollie ever.

This morning I got up at 10, he got up at 11.30, came downstairs went out in the garden didnt even bother to cock his leg to pee just squatted like a girl, went in the house half eat his breakfast and laid on the settee asleep til 1. He is so lazy! Have uploaded a pic or two

HenriettaFarthingay · 08/10/2011 21:08

Yeah, it's a windup. Otherwise, bloody stupid.

Vallhala · 08/10/2011 21:09

Signet, your photos aren't public. :o

Seems your boy has my younger GSDs share of chilled-out-ness. :)

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/10/2011 21:10

I liked the bit where Signet shouted 'Big balls!'

Signet2012 · 08/10/2011 21:18

Check now! It says they are visible to any mnetter

Whats funnier is once I read a post about a MN whose little girl had been poorly at school.... then I read a thread in a different window about a dog acting odd when It came home from the vets...

I then posted " Oh mine was like that after he had his balls cut off, he came home laid on the third step up growling at me and talking to himself, was fine after a while"

And posted it on the wrong thread Blush

Vallhala · 08/10/2011 21:19

Awww! Signet! Those soulful eyes (poochs I mean!) - what a beauty he is, no wonder you adore him so.

YABU. Sorry! Your dog has been kept indoors, his coat has adapted to living indoors. It will be thinner and less weatherproof than an outdoor living dog. You cant just turn it out now, when the weather is cold and unpleasant.
You have a similar problem to us horsey people. If you want your dog/horse to winter out, you need to start roughing them off in september, when the weather changes. I couldnt take my stabled and rugged (the equivalent of living with central heating) horse and turn it out naked. It would suffer. And, the minute you bring it back in to your centrally heated house, it will just moult again.
Also, your poor dog has lived inside and been an integral part of your family. Its not really fair to just put it out on its own.
I have to say, like others have already, that you should have taken coat into consideration when you got the dog. Yes, your family came home with it, but Im sure no reputable breeder would refuse to take the puppy back if it wasnt the right dog for you.

babyheavingmassofmaggots · 08/10/2011 21:24

Signet - your dog is lovely!

AhsataN · 08/10/2011 21:26

ohhhhhh vallhala you have a white shepard! Envy i have a black and tan long haired. ive always fancied a white long haired.

Signet2012 · 08/10/2011 21:35

Ive done some more, thanks everyone he is a weird looking bugger but I love him, sad times soon as he isnt well so enjoying every last little bit of him whilst I still can, hair included!

MillyR · 08/10/2011 21:41

OP, if this is not a joke, then you have answered your own questions.

As you say, Collies were bred to accompany a shepherd and herd sheep. They are extremely intelligent dogs who need company and something to do. If you are intending to take your dog out all day every day herding sheep, then it will probably have enough stimulation and company to cope with sleeping in a kennel.

If, on the other hand, you are going to put it in a kennel for 23 and half hours a day in solitary confinement, then I hope you are just posting on here as a very unfunny joke.

DogsBeastFiend · 08/10/2011 21:48

So sorry to hear that Signet. :(

(Tis Vall, btw, I decided to revert to my alter-ego and then Halloween-ise it!).

Signet2012 · 08/10/2011 21:52

Yeah, it sucks. He is only 7 and a half, but much older in his health, I guess sometimes you get good crosses and sometimes you dont.

Had 7 and a half years with him, always wanted a dog since I was a kid, he is my dog and he is an amazing dog. Hopefully will have a bit longer yet until I have to make "that" decision.

While he still tries to fight the postman as if he has never seen post before in his life, chasing imaginary stones on the beach and fights me for the last half of my hobnobs he is well enough to be here. When he stops enjoying that then Ill know its time. Im banking on him letting me know :(

Still such as life eh!

Sorry OP hijacked your post here!

SweatyBettyLikesItOnTheSettee · 08/10/2011 22:01

Oh well, i suppose the general consensus is not to get a kennel.

I wonder why they sell kennels any more.

And MillyR of course she would not be in solitary confinement, what a silly thing to say!

Just to sleep in a kennel.

Not banished to the wilderness.

Signet2012 · 08/10/2011 22:04

Well she will moult during the day as well as at night? So surely she would be in the kennel most the time?

AhsataN · 08/10/2011 22:10

kennels are usually for working dogs that live outside not just get chucked out because they are dropping fur on the fucking floor. have you not listened to all the repeated advice from several posters on your dogs coat and acclimatising ect. this has really become boring due to the fact you aren't particularly bothered by the advice and are doing what you want anyway. why ask.

hairychesty · 08/10/2011 22:21

OP I to had a collie. Sadly he died at ten years old, but not once did i ever consider putting him outside in a kennel when he started losing hair.

Brush him once or (god forbid) even twice a day.

Hoover every day.

I really cant believe you care for the dog much, so you will obviously carry on!

Haggyoldclothbatspus · 08/10/2011 22:25

OP. Would you like to be turned out of the house at this time of year, to sleep outside in your indoor clothes? You just arent listening!
Outdoor dogs sleep outside. Thats what kennels are for.
You asked for peoples opinions and were given them. They are pretty unanimous.
TBH, Ive had enough now too. I feel really sorry for your poor dog. Sad
