To expect to donate money to DS's school, for Jeans for Genes, not wine for the tombola?

My DS's school invited all pupils to wear jeans to school today, and in return they should donate a bottle of "anything from ketchup to champagne" for the school Christmas tombola". Jeans for Genes is a charity for children with genetic problems! It's their big day for raising money and awareness, so I sent a note in with my son's donation of wine, asking if they are going to donate anything to the actual Jeans for Genes charity. I hope it at least makes them think, and make a donation, if they weren't already planning to do so. What do you think?

I would be expecting the money raised by the tombola to be donated to the charity.

I must admit I would assume the tombola proceeds would go to the charity, is this not the case?

On specific days, the money raised should go to the specific charity. End of.

Tombolas etc., especially at Christmas are usually for the school via PTA (usually) so its not clear that the money raised will go towards Jeans for Genes... and it should be clear.

Our school don't acknowledge Jeans4Genes Day (their choice) but do others, and never has any money raised been for anything other than the charity in question.

I suspect the main reason that they don't acknowledge it is that there's already been 3 non uniform days since September...

how weird, maybe they are just planning to raise awareness but at the same time raise school funds??
DH went into work in Jeans today, with money in his pocket :)

Totally depends where the tombola money is going!

We often get asked for a donation for tombolas instead of money - which must be why the prizes on the tombola at Christmas are mainly crap! Wink

Have they actually used the "jeans for Genes" line or is it just "wear jeans and raise some money"...

YANBU, I would expect the money from the Christmas tombola to be donated to the charity.

I am in work in Jeans, having made my donation, thats the whole point, you 'pay to wear jeans' for the day to work, school etc and that money goes to the jeans for genes charity.

Bathsheba, yes, on the "flyer" they sent home, the heading is "Jeans For Genes Day" It says "To take part in the fun afternoon we are asking for a contribution. A bottle of anything from tomato ketchup to champagne. This is to help towards out Christmas tombola." Now I don't want to cause the school any trouble, it's a kind of "special school" and very small and I'm really grateful that DS goes there (He just started this September) but DD has a genetic disability, it's a charity close to my heart. I just hope the note I sent in with the wine, will make sure they DO donate...

My children's school used to do mufti days so as to raise donations for the Christmas/summer fairs. Jeans for Genes day is about raising money and awareness of genetic problems

If they are raising money on the back of a charity slogan and putting it towards teh PTS proceeds from the Christmas Fair, then that is very very wrong.

As they have mentioned the Jeans for Genes thing, then the money does have to go to that charity.

DS's teacher just phoned me, about something else. I asked her about this matter and she didn't even know that Jeans for Genes was a charity! Shock
She said she'd look into it and put the answer in DS's home school diary...

That's fair enough. I didn't know it was a charity until yesterday.

It is odd though that they weren't asked for money to donate

Mine went in with a pound this morning.

I guess this might be just being done out of ignorance, but they know now, I said to the teacher that I really hope they make a donation... fingers crossed!

Good news... School phoned me and reassured me that they do indeed donate to the charity.... the teacher told me that a large percentage of parents send their kids in without any donation if they are asked for money, but this way, they get something from almost all the kids (well, families!). It's a very small school, so if half don't donate it's not much at all! That's such a relief!
