... to not get why CNN is going all "Princess Diana" over Steve Jobs

seriously, I think it's very sad. But on CNN, they're going very OTT over Steve Jobs. Or Am I being unfair

OP posts:
Sevenfold · 06/10/2011 16:04

the press do go OTT, look at all the knox stuff.
at least this man actually did something good.

GwendolineScaryLacey · 06/10/2011 16:04

And so he should. Had far more of an effect on a lot of people's lives than Princess Di or Amy Winehouse and no one was allowed to look sideways at her picture on here when she died. A wee bit hypocritical, no?

KittyFane · 06/10/2011 16:06

Gwendoline- agree :)

mycatsaysach · 06/10/2011 16:06

really gwendoline - would it have made much diff if apple didn't exist?? wouldn't people who have their stuff just bought another brand??

genuine question

crazygracieuk · 06/10/2011 16:07

Bridgetbust- good question but he was first and that's significant.

I don't care what random people at the apple store have to say either.

GwendolineScaryLacey · 06/10/2011 16:09

Without Steve Jobs there wouldn't be an Apple Inc. When he came back in 1997 Apple was moribund. To be an Apple user at that time was to be an object of ridicule, I know all too well. The iMac revolutionised computing. The iPod revolutionised music. I remember conversations with friends who couldn't believe my iMac didn't have a floppy drive, how the hell was I supposed to get files in or out of it? How many successful tablets were there before the iPad? How many smart phones? Blackberry? That's it. He might not have invented these things but he made them part of our lives, took the decision to go with things and everyone else followed. That deserves a bit of fuss.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 06/10/2011 16:11

I don't get 'it'. I think the adulation and fawning is over the top and it doesn't matter how much you achieve in your professional life, to me what you do and who you are as a person is what's really important.

Will there be apples lining the roadways now... in place of marmite jars? Why do some people really take it on themselves to 'grieve' for people they don't know?

cantspel · 06/10/2011 16:12

The fact is no one else did invent these thing. Steve jobs did. Are you using a mouse to navigate your computer?
Well Steve gave you that.
Do you have music, photos, vids or any other stuff on your mobile?
Well Steve gave you that.
Do you download music online?
Well Steve gave you that.

You dont need to be a user of apple products to be using technology that came out of Steve Jobs/apple.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 06/10/2011 16:12

I think Amy had more of an affect on my life than Mr Jobs but I am still sad that he died.

He was a very clever man but he is no more or less important than anyone else who died today surely?

The news coverage doesnt bother me. It always happens when someone of note to the media dies. It will pass though. Doesnt matter who it is the media tire very quickly and move on.

I hope that his death raises awareness of cancer and how far we still have to go.

I am sorry for his family.

GwendolineScaryLacey · 06/10/2011 16:13

x post cats, but my post sort of answers you :) The people who bought their stuff wouldn't have had another brand to buy, it's as simple as that. A lot of these things exist because Apple pushed it. Then other manufacturers jumped on board. My cousin rang me a while back to tell me her DH had bought her an iPad. When I visited and commented on it she said, oh, it's not actually an Apple iPad... That told me a lot. How many people call their mp3 player an iPod even when it's not. These products have become like Hoover or Sellotape.

crazygracieuk · 06/10/2011 16:13

Mycat- Apple is special because they made gadgets that look beautiful beautiful and easy to use. We would have all bought other gadgets but they are usually not as pleasing to the eye and easy to use as Apple products. Inventions like the scrolling wheel on the iPod are such neat solutions.

vanfurgston · 06/10/2011 16:17

" "I think he deserves more adulation than Diana, but that's just me."

it's not just you"

defo not just you. he changed technology and gave it a sonic boost.

bridget mayb or mayb not. he had the vision to do it, so u cant take anything from his achievements

mycatsaysach · 06/10/2011 16:19

ok ok i see
i am so not interested in tech stuff - don't have a mobile or ipod
to me computers = work as when i was at work we all had them on our desks
we have pc here but it really is just a pc to me nothing else

GwendolineScaryLacey · 06/10/2011 16:23

Brilliant innovator in a way which affects the masses daily lives in a obvious way + apple fan boys

uselesspregnantmum · 06/10/2011 16:36

It is sad, but I agree with whoever said, I don't think he was actually a very nice person - he claimed to be sterile and denied paternity of his eldest daughter rather than support her mother, then went on to have three more children. Yes he was a brilliant inventor - but a crappy father from the sounds of it.

uselesspregnantmum · 06/10/2011 16:37

Also, the workers at his factory might not have agreed with the CNN/world view that he was an amazing person - at least 10 killed themselves because of the awful conditions they had to endure.

INeedAHipHoperation · 06/10/2011 16:40

HE INVENTED THE FREAKIN INTERNET. He thought, oh you know what would be good? And POW he made it so!

Where would Mumsnet be without the internet I ask you? We'd all be frickin pen pals!!

RogerMelly · 06/10/2011 16:43

stop watching it if you don't like it
