To not let DD read Cosmo, More, Just 17, Company & other trashy magazines?

Ok so she's only 6 but I have stopped buying them and will be very reluctant to allow her to read them as I think they peddle a feeling of insecurity and advertise advertise advertise creating a really greedy mentality

Is this a kind of stealth-type boast of how advanced your dd is at reading? I admit I am Confused

Obviously the content of some magazines (and indeed other written material) is inappropriate for young children. This is where as a parent I feel it is my responsibility to supervise what she is reading and has access to.

However I will continue to buy my choice of reading matter rather than us all resort to reading at the same level.

I will go mad if I can only read children's books. Roald Dahl's all right, but not for my main reading!

I don't think you'll need to worry about her reading Just 17. They stopped publishing it in 2004. Wink

I know what you mean. I allow my 4 year old to flick through my Essentials looking at 'clip-clops' and dresses but I know that in a couple of years I will feel that that is inappropriate for the very reasons you state...When she can read they'll be off limits!

all newspapers and magazines (as far as I know) have advertisements. That's how it works.

erm.
i dont think she woudl be too bothered to read them, tbh, too much writing.
and the adverts, well you can't get away from them, you can try and ban itv and channel 4 but i doubt that would work.

My DD is only 9 months, so I have a while to go before crossing this bridge! However, when she is 6,7,11 (whatever) I won't ban her from looking at my magazines. I am not usually a fan of blanket bans. I'd tell her about airbrushing and answer any questions she had. I'd try to raise self esteem-that you are not defined by looks/bling/frou frou, but that elements of it can be fun.

Actually I do think they're pretty poisinous things for young women to read with pages and pages of 'perfect' models, telling you what to wear & how to do your make-up

I don't like them much either ,but I'm afraid I couldn't stop my teenager DDs reading whatever they wanted

Teenagers these days can't read anything longer than a facebook status anyway, so you probably won't have to worry when the time comes.
