as a teen i was a goth. black lipstick and dark attitude Blush i had my DS at the age of 18 so i 'grew' up and dressed as what my mum would call normal but in the last few months my pink converse shoes have secretly been finding their way on to my feet beneath my jeans with an excuse of "they're comfy for driving" but i cant let go of my punk rock style and have been craving it for years! i dont mean black lippy etc, just flared jeans and wanting to get my pink guitar out Blush just have an 'individul' sense of style?
(as you can see pink is my fav colour lol)

im 23 now with 2 DC am i being silly to not be able to let go of my style? DP hasnt said anything Hmm

i REALLY should have name changed!! Blush

And I meant to say as soon as The baby belly's gone down a bit and I can fit into normal clothes again I fully intend to dress young and not mumsy. Wear what you want don't feel that you need to pretend to be middle aged to be a good mum.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 04/10/2011 21:46

I have silver glittery Converse and I am 34. Let's hope your mum the fashion age priest absolves me.

You are 23. You can wear what the fuck you like!

GreenMonkies · 04/10/2011 21:47

I'm 42, I wear t-shirts from Truffle Shuffle, Babycham trainers or biker boots, my hair is a very vivid red (not quite scarlet but as close as I can get it without bleaching it all) and I refuse to stop.

I'm not clinging to my youth, I'm just not giving up my own personal style. And neither should you, 23! Bloody hell, you are still in your youth!!!!

babycham42 · 04/10/2011 21:51

Oh Grow up Grin

perplexedpirate · 04/10/2011 21:57

I too have silvery glittery converse, and am 33 for three more weeks. What's more I got married in them.
I don't know what I'd wear without converse, docs, black skinnies, slogan tees, random nail varnish, black sparkley eye liner, slouchy flares etc etc. I have a job where I have to look vaguely respectable but I think I still manage to incorporate my own style into that.
Rejoice in your inner goth! Or, you know, what we do instead of rejoice. Mooch I suppose.

Jellykat · 04/10/2011 21:59

I think most mums lose their sense of identity when they have DCs, i know i did, but it does come back - you are who you are!

Agree with everyone else, you should dress exactly how you want in whatever makes you feel like you.

I'm 48 and currently sitting here in black and furry leopardskin converse stylee boots, massive rings on every finger and 8 earrings..(hasten to add I am wearing clothes too btw)

My ethos is i have never, and will never, wear beige! Grin

unpa1d Converse are the original and cool brand of 'baseball boot', they have a star logo Smile

scottishmummy · 04/10/2011 22:10

clinging to youth is mutton dressed as lamb=madonna
she needs to put her sinewy arms and crotch bulge away.yuk
23 is not ole gimmer time yet

CardyMow · 04/10/2011 22:34

You are Soooooo BU to dress 'mumsy' when you are only 23. One group of my friends are aged 27-35, and, um, description-wise - one has BRIGHT (day-glo) pink hair, one has Sunflower yellow hair one wears DM's with mini skirts (and looks great I might add jealously ). If you want to wear converse, dye your hair rainbow coloured and get tattoos covering up every inch of your body - then DO!

You do not have to look 'mumsy' just because your are a mum! There's no 'rule' that says that! I am a mum that had their first dc at a younger age than you did - I was 16yo. I am not going to change MY style because I happen to have given birth to my 4 dc.

I wear converse under 'flappy' jeans, I dye my hair bright red when I get the time which isn't right now with an 8mo baby. I have tattoos.

I also have a 13yo DD, a 9yo DS1, an (almost) 8yo DS2 and an 8mo DS3. Just because my dress sense is a bit 'alternative', doesn't make me any less of a mum, and it has never affected my dc. Though DS1 is going through a bit of a Goth stage himself now...Grin. DD is more into mainstream fashion (which appears to be dressing in clothes that are so old-fashioned my Grandma wouldn't be seen in them...). And DS2 couldn't give two hoots what he's wearing!

GlitterySkulls · 04/10/2011 22:40

i wear whatever i like, including converse, knee-high steelies, leopard- print, waspie's... i am also 23 :)

plenty of time for dressing sensibly when i'm old Grin

BoosMaw · 04/10/2011 22:48

I've been an old lady since I was 16. Either way I don't think it matters, just do whatever you feel like doing.

Petisa · 04/10/2011 22:50

Well OP, I'm nearly 35 and wear punky clothes and have a tattooed arm, no hope for me now! Grin

GreenMonkies · 04/10/2011 23:36

(thinking about it, do Goths wear pink converse? When i was 23 {20 years ago} all goths wore black, DMs and crushed velvet, perhaps a bit of dark purple here and there if they felt like a bit of colour)

piprabbit · 04/10/2011 23:45

I am old enough to be your mother (just) and I absolutely forbid you to wear anything you don't really, truly love.

So there.

Now get out there and enjoy your style.

WilsonFrickett · 04/10/2011 23:51

unpa1d they are a type of 'baseball boot' wot the 'young' do wear. They don't sell them in Waiterose though Grin

madhattershouse · 04/10/2011 23:54

I'm 38, still wear black, sometimes velvet (though not practical enough with young kids) and I'll fight tooth and nail to keep my Doc Martins!

lucyhoneybee · 04/10/2011 23:55

Lol, nobody aged 23 should wear what their mum thinks is "normal" My mum puts makeup on before going in the garden in case the neighbours see her without it and thinks BHS is really chic ( sorry BHS, but you're not). I'm a still- young 40 and I wear whatever I feel like and whenever i'm a little late for toddler group, work or school I just say breezily "Sorry, I couldn't find my hairbrush". And it's normally true. ( I have hair down to my waist that I took to the hairdresser in 2005) And I have a grown up job too! Agree with LizzyLou. You only get the nine lives. Oh wait, you're a person not a cat.. seize life, my friend! You're only young once! ( ruefully, rheumy eyes staring into distance). And, when your kids are teens they won't be embarassed cos they'll be used to the real you !

springydaffs · 05/10/2011 00:27

I have a relative who has an extremely responsible job (which she was head-hunted for) and her arms are covered in tattoos, she has fluorescent hair, and is generally pierced, if you get my drift. She is 38.

I am also considering doing the fluorescent hair thing and, here's the thing, I wouldn't have to bleach my hair first . The only thing that constrains me from wearing exactly what I like is a bulging middle section, which has a mind of its own and did all that expanding without my permission.

I get that you were sensitive to horrid, nosey, judgemental peoples' comments OP but oh lordy, do enjoy your youth while you have it and don't, for the love of God, go all mumsy. I mean, how dull

FreddieMercurysBolero · 05/10/2011 01:05

Are White Stripes goth now? Really? How strange.

HairyGrotter · 05/10/2011 01:15

I'm coming up to 31, I wear only black, have red hair, and wear skull stilettos and thigh boots of a night out.

Enjoy it!

pissedrightoff · 05/10/2011 01:43

Would anyone like to see my converse?

www.mamstore.co.uk/bin/pxisapi1.exe/large?item=810856

Am showing you anyway, Am in love with them.

unpa1dcar3r · 05/10/2011 08:27

Thanks Jelly
Thanks Wilson Grin Now if they sold them in Waitrose I'd have known what they were haha (not)

I DO know what they are now; my youngest girl has a pair but I didn't know thats what they were called.

Oh for the poster who's 'almost' old enough to be OP's mum, I have a daughter her age! And I didn't have her young (24) so i'm definitely officially unarguably old (however I alleviated this at age 40 when i began regressing so i'm now only 33, 32 next Birthday)

Rightio, off to buy me some converse shoes....Wink

WilsonFrickett · 05/10/2011 09:36

Grin Unp1d.

Pissedrightoff, I am hearting those [lusty emoticon]

Pudden · 05/10/2011 10:47

Knickers! I've just bought m'self a pair of Converse and I am nearly 48! When I was 23 I wore skirts like a belt, Dennis the Menace T shirts, stripey tights and one blue one red Converse. Them were the days :o

Deflatedballoonbelly · 05/10/2011 10:49

Your only 23!

but YABU if you think that wearing pink Converse is individual style! Wink

Xiaoxiong · 05/10/2011 11:06

Do what you want OP. There's a family I occasionally see on the weekends around us who are goths - both parents wear the full gear, makeup and exciting contact lenses, New Rock boots, full-length leather coats, some of the more exotic piercings (eg. down the spine) etc. They have two really cute and well-behaved kids. They are awesome.
