To give up wearing a bra?

DigOfTheStump · 04/10/2011 20:03

Right, hear me out on this one. I DO wear bras, honest, but lately I have been suffering at times from a gastro/indigestiony thingy and some days cannot wear a bra - it is just too tight around the chest, not the breast, and is actually not too tight, just feels like it, so I ditch it and .........oh!

I love it! I feel oo free, and to my eyes my breasts are not too far south. They're not perky either, but at my age who is gazing at them anyway lol.

So, thermal vests can be bought for the winter, need I ever wear a bra again? Is this a mad notion, or do we just wear bras cos that is the fashion, and there is no advantage.

Admittedly, I can imagine some outfits being improved by a good bra, so I may keep one for now and then Grin

I think bra's are a lie made up by men and in the end your boobs just go south anyway.

I never wear a bra when at home only for work or going out.

Thermal vest or strapy tops only at home Grin

squeakytoy · 04/10/2011 20:10

Depends if you have larger boobs or not, if you do, then going braless will not help you as they will sag. Have you tried a bigger bra size, or wearing a sports bra?

mumsamilitant · 04/10/2011 20:10

YANBU. Yes, just keep one you lucky mare how lucky you are, if I ditched them like my drawers (have been going comando for years now), they'd be on my knees! Would get shot of them too in a nano second if i could.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDawn · 04/10/2011 20:11

In the winter it's easy to go free and unnoticed Grin by the time you have a t-shirt or vest top, a long sleeved top, a wooly and your coat, all buttoned up to your chin, and your scarf on, nobody can tell anyway! Works for me and mine are Blush about waist level left to their own devices. Bras just bloody HURT so much :(

mumsamilitant · 04/10/2011 20:15

When I get home from work my favourite thing to do is "unleash the beasts"

FrillyMilly · 04/10/2011 20:18

YANBU. I only wear a bra outside the house or if we have guests. I love getting home and taking my bra off, aaah that feeling is amazing. I have suffered with heartburn for years and taking off my bra does help it. My boobs have gone a bit south from babies but I'm not arsed. I choose comfort over perky boobs. I've also given up the thongs and love big granny knickers. Should I admit im only 25? God knows what I'm gonna be like in another 20 years.

mumsamilitant · 04/10/2011 20:20

Would love to do what you do Pom but unfortunately I'd be soooo layered that I would walk like a yetti. Boobs are saggy obviously but in yer face (well a dwarfs face).

IvyAndGold · 04/10/2011 20:20

YANBU. I don't wear a bra in the house, but then I do have the chest of a nine year old. I can run upstairs braless and NOTHING HAPPENS.

twolittlemonkeys · 04/10/2011 20:22

YANBU, despite being small chested and much preferring the look of myself with a padded bra which adds a cup size or two, I have recently switched to just a really light cotton bra (no underwires digging in etc) and it's sooo much comfier! Even the cheapest ones like this are blissfully comfy in comparison to my previous ones. Still, not quite as comfy as going braless, which I do most of the time at home (and sometimes on the school run if I have more than one layer on!)

nooka · 04/10/2011 20:23

I never war a bra, and have only done so when I was pregnant or breastfeeding. I really dislike the feeling of wearing one, it feels like I am in harness. I'm sure it is fairly obvious that I am braless in the summer, but I really don't care.

msrisotto · 04/10/2011 20:24

I love being braless in the house but if I do for too long, my nipples get sore! How do you solve that one?

MangoMonster · 04/10/2011 20:25

Maybe get a proper measurement . I think bras stop sagging, or thats what I've been lead to believe, plus can't deal win everyone seeing my nipples! :)

Meglet · 04/10/2011 20:28

I only wear them out of the house. I'm convinced I have over-stretchy ribs as no size bra or vest top feels comfy, they're all restrictive.

Maybe tit-tape would work better, keep my boobs tidy but allow my ribs to breathe Hmm

livinonaprayer · 04/10/2011 20:28

Grin at "unleash the beasts"

DigOfTheStump · 04/10/2011 20:31

Oooo, I have never had the sore nipple thing!

I am sure I do look a bit saggy to other folks - but if they are looking then they get what they deserve lol.

I might go for a proper fitting, however, I am not sure ill fitting is the problem.

I am about a 34/36 c or so, so not tiny, but not HUGE either.

i am preggers and find bras to be sooooooo uncomfortable atm. i'm always desperate to get home and whip mine off. just an idea, have you tried wearing a swimming costume underneith your clothes on "itchy boob days", could feel less restrictive and provide a little bit of support? i did this when i was having dd until my bum got too big for my maternity swimming costume. maybe this time i'll get one of those bumps like on tv so then i can just rest my boobs on my bump Hmm
just keeps bras for when u have to socialise.

thederkinsdame · 04/10/2011 21:00

OMG I thought I was weird for thinking bras are instruments of torture! I've hated them all my life and always want to take it off the minute I get thru the door. Sadly due to an over generous ration in the norjage dept going braless is not an option for out and about. See, I'd men had boobs something far better would've been invented by now

thederkinsdame · 04/10/2011 21:01

Norkage not norjage

talkingnonsense · 04/10/2011 21:02

What about a support vest? Would that be less constricting?

GeneralCustardsHardHat · 04/10/2011 21:06

As a 36 E(normous) i'm incredibly jealous and would love the opportunity to do likewise so just because I'm bitter YABU :o

WoTmania · 04/10/2011 21:06

YANBU - I go braless as often as possible. Just if I wearing stuff that is snig or fitted I don't. Winter is perfect oo as as said up thread after a few layers no one can notice anyway

DigOfTheStump · 04/10/2011 21:06

mmmm support vest ... off to google that now.

BTW I wore a per una dress for a presentation at work today, and numerous women came up to say they loved my dress; nobody commented on the boobs lol.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDawn · 04/10/2011 21:07

you can get "thingies" like little round plasters to stick on sore nipples - google "jogger's nipple" - it's a recognised condition in stupid exercisy types those who insist on jogging with intent.

Mandy2003 · 04/10/2011 21:08

I'm around a 36B and HATE underwired bras. There's no need for them in everyday use IMO. Plus I'm not sure that they are safe for breast tissue either.

So I was really excited to click twolittlemonkeys link for the non-wired cotton bras. But I was disappointed - white or pink only, no black Sad. Same as Primark, they do one style of non-wired bra, hide it away in a dark corner and it only comes in white. Even that is not as good as it was - it used to have a double strap but now it's changed to single so it cuts in and has more synthetic content. Grr.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDawn · 04/10/2011 21:10

Mine are bigger than 36E not a stealth boast but a moan of despair honest and I just got to the point where I don't care anymore what I look like - I cannot stand the cutting in, digging in, blisters and sore patches where the straps rub, constriction and pain of a bra anymore. And that's without the damn things costing me nigh on forty quid a pop! I wear it when I must look "normal shaped" or only have one or two layers on, but as soon as I get home, and when I'm all bundled up, I go for comfort every time.
