DH wasn't going to brown the mince first....

AIBU or is DH.

I left him to make bolognaise tonight and came down as he was pouring chopped tomatoes into a pan in which he had browned some onion, aubergine and carrot....I looked at him and said what about the mince and he said it will be fine. I said you will need to brown it in another pan first and he said no I don't it will be fine.

I insisted that he brown it first in another frying pan before adding it to the chopped tomatoes and veg....

Was I being unreasonable...does anyone not brown the mince first?

I would not brown it necessarily; cooked is cooked, safety wise.
Probably better taste if browned, I imagine.

MrsBuntyCuldeSacFunnyLady · 04/10/2011 19:35

He isn't the same DH who rinses mince is he?

lubeybooby · 04/10/2011 19:35

It really doesn't make much difference. I never seal meat any more before adding it to my slow cooker. Jamie Oliver has also been known to say it doesn't matter. Long as its cooked long enough of course.

Deesus · 04/10/2011 19:35

I always brown the mince first - you are right! Smile

MardyBra · 04/10/2011 19:36

Yes, I always brown the mince, and then pour off the surplus fat.

MrsBuntyCuldeSacFunnyLady · 04/10/2011 19:36

I brown it first, anyhow but in with onions, garlic etc...

whoneedssleepanyway · 04/10/2011 19:36

No...people rinse the mince...?

I brown mine in with the garlic, onion and celery. Never thought of doing it seperately!

MardyBra · 04/10/2011 19:37

I even drain the fat from posh mince.

squeakytoy · 04/10/2011 19:38

It wont make the slightest bit of difference if you brown it or not. If it is cheap mince, it is better to brown it to drain off the excess fat, but otherwise, no need. My mother never browned mince in her life, and made the best shepherds pie ever.

MrsBuntyCuldeSacFunnyLady · 04/10/2011 19:38

Believe it or not yes! There was a whole thread about it a while back.

yellowraincoat · 04/10/2011 19:40

My mum browns the mince and it makes it taste all dry and clumped together.

I just bung the whole lot in the pan with the chopped tomatoes and it tastes much nicer.

What's the thinking on browning mince anyway?

TrillianAstra · 04/10/2011 19:40

YABU to be dirtying another pan.

usualsuspect · 04/10/2011 19:41

The rinse the mince thread was very funny Grin

I always brown the mince

whoneedssleepanyway · 04/10/2011 19:42

Good question yellowraincoat, I assumed it was so you could drain the fat off...also does it not look a nicer colour...

OH is cooking and clearing up tonight so I don't care about the second pan...

YANBU to brown the mince but in my view YABU to start issuing directions when you are not the one cooking - in my house you would have been cooking it yourself.

Choufleur · 04/10/2011 19:43

NO! Really people rinse mince. Why?

MrsBuntyCuldeSacFunnyLady · 04/10/2011 19:45

travailtotravel · 04/10/2011 19:46

You can do it either way. I always brown, so YANBU. But YABU to interfere when it's DH's watch ... he might be put off doing it again, girl!!

WilsonFrickett · 04/10/2011 19:48

I brown it to get the fat out.

And now I can't stop saying rinse the mince.

squeakytoy · 04/10/2011 19:49

it will go brown when it cooks anyway, you dont need to pre-brown it!

for spag bol I just fling it all in the pan with onions peppers mushrooms etc, heat it a bit then add the sauce... and with shepherds pie I put the mince in an oven proof dish with water, seasoning and stock cubes, and cook in the oven on a low temp for a long time... the longer it cooks, the nicer it tastes.

Alouiseg · 04/10/2011 19:51

Leave the bastard!

25goingon95 · 04/10/2011 19:56

But if you don't brown it you will have all the fat mixed in with your meal I brown the mince AND scrape it out of the pan onto sheets of kitchen roll to get any excess fat off Grin
