AIBU or is DH.

I left him to make bolognaise tonight and came down as he was pouring chopped tomatoes into a pan in which he had browned some onion, aubergine and carrot....I looked at him and said what about the mince and he said it will be fine. I said you will need to brown it in another pan first and he said no I don't it will be fine.

I insisted that he brown it first in another frying pan before adding it to the chopped tomatoes and veg....

Was I being unreasonable...does anyone not brown the mince first?

Rinse the mince!

I always brown it, and properly brown it, which means not stirring it very much. It goes in with the onions.

My gran used to boil frozen bejam mince before she cooked it.

I try to cook in opposite ways from my gran

Grin And relax....

Thanks Pandemoniaa - I was having a crisis of confidence there...

Furball · 04/10/2011 20:38

Jamie Oliver doesn't brown his mince

and neither do I! the meat is more tender without browning

frownieface · 04/10/2011 20:53

@ MrsBuntyCuldeSacFunnyLady

Yes he still does, it means that any mince related dish, I cook! (maybe he has an ulterior motive Hmm)

mawbroon · 04/10/2011 20:54

but Gordon Ramsay says not to put a cross in your sprouts.

and he's got a michelin star, or something

Deesus · 04/10/2011 21:06

hmmm....would just feel weird not to cross sprouts.....not sure i can be persuaded, michelin star or no....Wink

dementedma · 04/10/2011 21:10

I brown mince unless doing it in the slow cooker, in which case I just bung it in.
don't cross sprouts - shred them finely and stirfry them with mustard and cream. That's how we have them for Christmas.

LittleMissFlustered · 04/10/2011 21:11

I sit on the fence. Sometimes I brown, sometimes I throw in the slow cooker and let it take a chance. Still aliveGrin

LoveInAColdClimate · 04/10/2011 21:13

I sometimes do, sometimes don't. Haven't died. TBH would be so overcome at finding DH cooking anything I wouldn't give a bugger how he was doing it!

aldiwhore · 04/10/2011 21:14

YABU OP, whilst it may taste better if browned there is no health hazzard at all (so long as he actually cooks it).

If you want it done a certain way, you do it. Leave the cook alone!

By the way, I have rinsed mince Blush but only when its really fatty and when I've been dieting, tastes perfectly fine by the way!

Can't be arsed mostly though.

AuntiePickleBottom · 04/10/2011 21:24

never thought of not browning the mince....will have a go without doing it.

but yabu, he cooked and cleaned the kitchen after. Going to be a rebel and say why didn't you clean up after he cooked lol Grin

acsec · 04/10/2011 21:28

I brown it with garlic, onions, Oxo cube then drain the fat even from the lean steak mince. The idea of it being raw when the tomatoes go in makes me feel a little Confused

seeker · 04/10/2011 21:30

You insisted- and you didn't end up wearing the unbrowned mince whle he and the kids went to the pub for tea? He's got more tolerance than I would hav had!

startail · 04/10/2011 21:32

Cook onions, add mince and garlic, brown mince. Add grated carrot, herbs, tinned tomatoes and bubble. Add tomato puree if needed. Cool and put it in the fridge.
Do not be tempted to touch or even taste the spaghetti Bol till tomorrow.
I said leave it! Don't adjust the seasoning, leave it! Even if it means tea is frozen pizza.

Spag Bol tastes 100x better when all the flavours have blended.

startail · 04/10/2011 21:35

Oh and you are utterly unreasonable to dirty 2 pans unless you are making a very large quantity, when getting the mince browned rather than steamed can be tricky.

seeker · 04/10/2011 21:36

Startail- you forgot the celery in with the carrot, and the glug of red wine. You must have been in a hurry......

whoneedssleepanyway · 04/10/2011 21:41

Well it was very tastey.

It wasn't traditional bolognese as was lamb mince and as we had some aubergine left it got chucked in just to clear that up Grin

I had started dinner but he took over as DDs wanted me.

I normally cook and clear up hence his turn.

Think I was a bit control freakish will stay out of kitchen next time as what I don't know won't hurt me.

Oh Yes and I say cross the sprouts Grin

BTW the second pan only came into it as chopped tomatoes had gone in. Normally I do onions add meat then the rest Smile

ElaineReese · 04/10/2011 21:43

I brown it cos I think it tastes better fried than braised. I'm sure it would cook fine though.

alemci · 04/10/2011 21:53

I tend to brown mince with onions first. It does go lumpy. would it be better just to cook it in sauce instead?

PigletJohn · 04/10/2011 22:11

Surely you know the rule for Asking People To Do Things?

You either let them do it, or you do it yourself if you think you can do it better.

startail · 04/10/2011 23:22

It's how my mum always makes it and she doesn't drink red wineHmm
Celery comes in ridiculous sized bunches, never worked what to do with the rest. No one here likes raw celery.
Anyway if you let it spend a night in the fridge you really don't need to jazz it up, which leaves more wine to drinkSmile
