To think the word GEEK is overused.....

I think it is the equivalent of saying "I'm maaaad me" ... you are not a geek if you can call yourself one...

....or if you know a bit more than the average Joe about popular culture like Terry Pratchet, The Simpsons or Dr Who ....

I think proper geekdom can only be achieved if the subject is not terribly well known or if you need to be very clever or if you are fully engrossed in it to the point of insanity.

I would probably have '8764 days since Concorde's first flight' or something Grin

Klad yes I think DP is a geek with a cunning veneer of jock Grin

dawntigga · 04/10/2011 10:27

Nope, I'm a stealth geek. To look at me you wouldn't know I'm a geek but then you find out I collect comics and many, many other things.

Teenagers i know have far more of the Geek / Jock / Goth / Emo etc. labelling at school now than we ever did - prob an American import i'm thinking....

You wouldn't think I am a nerd either if you looked at me, but if you started asking what job I did I would bore you to death.

Xiaoxiong · 04/10/2011 10:38

I am apparently a nerd as I have all the "example nerd interests" according to that link and am a mathmo. And I'm married to a nerd. However I think I must be geeky about LotR because among other things I taught myself how to speak and write Quenya because it's prettier than Sindarin. I have been known to kill conversations at parties by holding forth enthusiastically about Tolkienalia. I think this must make me a geek as well?? Can one be both geek and nerd at the same time?

I would put a Blush but I don't understand why everyone else doesn't want to do the same!! Polan quete Quenya and I'm not ashamed to say it Smile

manicbmc · 04/10/2011 10:48

Indeed. Grin

I don't see the OP's problem. Be who you want to be. So what if you're a bit geeky or nerdy, it's hardly harming anyone.

I'm probably a bit geeky, with the whole role playing game thing, as is dp. I don't generally shout it from the rooftops and just potter about in my merry way. Smile

wigglybeezer · 04/10/2011 11:03

With "The IT Crowd" as an example, Roy is a geek and Moss is a nerd.

DS2 had a very "Moss" moment at Warhammer club on Sunday; an older kid destroyed his army doing an illegal move, steam came out of DS2's ear and he couldn't speak for about two hours (I made him laugh eventually and he was OK). He still wants to go back next week.

I think I was a nerd as a child, but don't have the time to be a nerd now. DH and DS2 are definitely nerds, DS3 is heading that way. DS1 is sporty and popular (how did that happen?).

MortBlackCatsandWitch · 04/10/2011 11:05

Reread my posts - i have absolutely no problem with Geeks...just the opposite in fact....

Now I'm totally confused, because I'd use the terms geek and nurd the opposite way round. To me a nurd is someone who'd bore you witless on some obscure subject, but is not very bright.
Or a nurd may be very bright my historian uncle, but utterly useless at anything practical.
While a geek may bore you on their favourite subject, almost certainly computing or physics related, but when your computer crashes they will have a damned good idea how to fix it. The very best geeks can also fix cars, plumbing, electrical gadgets and even unblock drains. However, they are very rare and I'm keeping the one I'm married toGrin

MmeLindor. · 04/10/2011 11:41

According to that link, I am neither geek nor nerd.

Although I do consider myself a geek in a gadget geek way.

Maybe I am just an Apple Sheep Geek

Wilfimina · 04/10/2011 12:24

There is actually a test to see whether or not you are in fact a geek.

The distinction between geek and nerd I've always heard is along the lines of 'a geek is an attractive nerd' - where 'attractive' can be about looks or sexiness or the degree of skill they have.

Or simply 'geek' can be self-identified whereas 'nerd' is always an insult that comes from other people.

(transport network geek, with other geek interests such as linguistics)

lljkk · 04/10/2011 12:32

Grin @ Geeks getting snooty about who else can call themselves a geek.
Being a geek was a badge of honour amongst many of my friends 20+ years ago.

Awomancalledhorse · 04/10/2011 12:34

I would say I'm a geek when it comes to graphic novels. films, games, science & history but I really can't stand computer geeks. I don't get programming, the fun in hacking or next gen phones.

DH has a computer science degree & has played WOW before...the ubergeek Grin

Kladdkaka · 04/10/2011 12:59

Love it. I'm a super geek. I answered for husband too. He's a dysfunctional geek. Sounds about right. :o

Tee2072 · 04/10/2011 13:04

Personally, I think you are only truly a geek if you know why the following conversation, which took place during a staff meeting at my previous employer, is funny: -

Head of Real Estate: So what should we call the new canteen?
Tee: Bob.
Rest of room: Hmm Confused
Tee: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I was the official office geek from thereon in.

Kladdkaka · 04/10/2011 13:06

Tee I spat my coffee over my keyboard. That's exactly what I would have said.

SardineQueen · 04/10/2011 13:06

Oh I like that link. DH and my brother are geeks, I may be a nerd but I wouldn't like to say. Until I have done the test Grin

SardineQueen · 04/10/2011 13:09

Oh god that test is WAY too long!

Tee2072 · 04/10/2011 13:16

Come sit by me, Kladdkaka!!!

GetOrfMo1Land · 04/10/2011 13:45

That test is for geeks as opposed to nerds.

SardineQueen · 04/10/2011 14:08

Where's my nerd test getorf?

OTOH I don't think I need one Grin

nooka · 04/10/2011 15:31

My nephew tells me that geek is a positive label and nerd is an insult, which sounds about right to me.
