AIBU to be pissed that I am working all christmas and all new year for the second year in a row.

Posted exactly the same moan last year, and told be thankful ive got a job!

Working 23, 24, 25, 26 DEC and 31, 1, 2, 3 JAN. Only work 3 days a week!

Pointless complaint will go in. Nothing will be changed. No one will swap. Same as last year!

Hope you all have a lovely time though, but please dont phone NHS Direct as I will be like a bear with a fucking sore head Grin

No you are totally justified and not unreasonable in any way. Surely someone can step in fir one shift?!

Surely you should take turns so no-one does both christmas and new year and certainly not two years in a row.

That's quite crap. DH works in retail so gets christmas day off, but he swaps and works all new year and gets boxing day off

No I dont think YABU. Im a Nurse to (thankfully work Monday to Friday only now and get public holidays) and yes nursing is a 24 hour 7 day a week job but when I worked in the wards and did the rotas I always tried to accomodate peoples requests and you either had Christmas or New Year off.

I don't understand why you have two runs of 4 days when you only work 3 days a week, irrespective of the days they fall on how does that work? Confused

The only time I've ever had off over X-mas is when I've been unemployed/housewife-ing (used to work in retail & then emergency services)..it really ruins the 'magic'.
DH will be having his first ever New Years Eve/Day off (and only because he's booked paternity leave)!!

Yes-unreasonable-have only ever done Xmas or New Year. Why are you working 4 days each week when you only work 3 days a week?

Surely you should say something.
I am nurse as well and everywhere I have worked it's been as fair as possible and very rare for someone to work both xmas and nyear without volunteering.
Sorry you have to but I would kick up a fuss about this if I were you.

Emergency services here Grin am in 24,25,26 dec and 29,30,31 and 1st jan
In 4 years have worked 3 Christmas days and 3 NYE

I used to nurse and it was always one or the other, not both. The sort of thing that makes you not glad to have a job

See ours is basically if our normal rota falls on those days, we have to work it. You can apply to have your name picked but can't apply for normal leave

because weeks starts mon so week 1 is 23, 24 and 25
week 2 26th and 31st and 1st
week 3 2nd 3rd jan and no doubt another day later

so thats hope working 3 days a week uyou can work 4 consquetive days technically you could work 6 days friday- following wednesday

I often did on call it was a rule that one did either xmas or new year alos a rule that you could not just book xmas off each year by being first in diary to request, we had someone whose home was far east and it was agreed they would get xmas and new year off every second year as with flights could not realistically go home for 3 days. YANBU holiday allocation should be fair

If other people did not work last christmas, and are not working this christmas then put in a complaint. It does not matter whether you have children or not and they do, you have as much right to christmas off as anyone else. And seriously if someone told me that my being able to have christmas away from work was dependent on my being fertile and letting a man have unprotected sex with me in order to get me pregnant they would be face a sexual discrimination complaint too.

week = mon to sunday, tbh lots of people have equally crap rotas. Some have loads off. Not fair.

I have big DC and a DH. What do the bosses care, none of them will be in the call centre, just like every weekend.

Havent a cat in hells chance of having it changed so resigned to fate.

Emergency services here and worked xmas and new year last year. Don't know exactly what shifts I'll be doing this year but will almost certainly be both again as time off has been allocated. I don't mind but just wish they could let us know before second week in December which was when it was last year.

YANBU, this rota sucks! Must admit, when nursing I was put on every Christmas eve and day purely because I had no kids, after I had them, I worked nearly every new year, as it was supposed that if you hadnt kids, you didn't celebrate Christmas as much, and vice versa for New year!
Mind you, last year I did both, as I was initially asked to do for "on call" for an agency for "part" of the Christmas holidays, I was supposed to get a break, but didn't as everyone else suddenly became "unavailable" when it came down to someone taking overHmmAngry! I have therefore decided that I am going to be "unavailable" on the crucial days this year![Wink

I am Nhs and we work either Xmas or new year. Definately not what you have been given.

Another nurse here - I worked 20th - Christmas Eve nights shift last year and NYD - 3rd Jan night shifts, where I work a blank off-duty sheet goes up on the notice board in the staff room in October and we each fill in our shifts as we'd like to work them, Sister then takes them and adjusts the shifts so that the numbers are right. Someone's always pissed off, but can't say I've ever seen someone get such a shitty run of shifts as you've got!

I'm a nurse now work in the community but used to be a ward manager and this never happened to my staff. However I have been treated like s** t before myself...it remains rife within the NHS unfortunately.

I am a nurse and in the various places I have worked you do one or the other not both - yes, the job is 24/7 but it should be split so that everybody has to work some rubbish shifts not all of them!
Although - saying that i do the off duty and you can never please everyone! Smile

Oh that is really unfair, of course YANBU. I always thought most places would either do Christmas OR New Year, or if you did it all one year you would have the next off. Worth a complaint anyway.
