To absolutely hate horse manure on the road.

I practically followed the manure home this evening. Dotted along the country roads and into the housing estate. (?)
If you ride, do you go back and shovel it up afterwards or leave it? They leave it here. :(

Oops! I haven't read that, (quote was invented during a long, shit based conversation with my horsey friend),
But I don't mind accidentally quoting Spike, I think he was bloody brilliant! Grin

If you bury horseshit under your veggie beds (dig down 12-18 inches) then you avoid the need for pre-composting.The heat from the decay also gives veggies a 2 month growth spurt. You can plant out far earlier with this method as well (use cloches or mini poly tunnels to protect foliage)

Horseshit is wonderful stuff, nectar and ambrosia to vegetables :)

CristinadellaPizza · 30/09/2011 09:37

My niece used to sell bags of well-rotted manure from her gate when she was younger for 50p each. She's very enterprising

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 30/09/2011 09:43

I wonder why riding stables don't bag it up to sell. I did my school work experience at a riding school and every morning we'd muck out 4 stables and get loads of barrowfulls of just poo!

Miggsie · 30/09/2011 09:45

Ever followed a herd of cows going to be milked?...ha ha ha...!!!!!

cazboldy · 30/09/2011 12:34

Allboxedin · 30/09/2011 13:37

Horses, dairy farm - perfect. Can I come and stay?

cazboldy · 30/09/2011 21:06

Hah! and 5 dc........ u stll want to? Grin

AmazingBouncingFerret · 30/09/2011 21:16

shit is shit is shit.

tyler80 · 30/09/2011 21:33

Having lived with vegetarians I can safely say that vegetarian human poo is no less offensive than other human poo, i presume the same applies to dogs.

Pixel · 30/09/2011 21:36

Isn't part of the problem with dog poo the fact that it can have worms in it that can cause blindness in children? I don't think horses have any diseases or anything that can be transmitted to humans.

ggirl · 30/09/2011 21:46

It's not the shit I mind it's the crawling behind them waiting to pass that drives me nuts.
I know they have the same irght of way and all that blah blah..just something that irks me when I'm in a hurry.Especially when they ride side by side.
trot on!!

Pixel · 30/09/2011 21:48

I'm not sure riding schools are allowed to sell it now, I think there is some EU nonsense rule where if you are a business it is classed as industrial waste and you have to have it taken away by someone qualified to transport it or something.
I suppose we could sell ours but we are just glad to see the back of it and give it away to anyone who will come and collect it. I did know some people who had stables next to allotments and they never had to do their own mucking out because there was a queue of people offering to do it for them.Grin

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 30/09/2011 22:14

That's ridiculous Hmm industrial waste? It's poo fgs!

Pendeen · 30/09/2011 22:24

OP I agree with you.

Horse owners really have no defence when their pets foul the road.

cazboldy · 30/09/2011 22:31

oh come on - it's gone after a few days, and at least you can see it to avoid it, not like the dogs poo you don't realise you have trodden in until you get home...

Pixel · 30/09/2011 22:35

Bleurgh!, getting dog poo off a shoe is disgusting, it takes ages to scrub it off. Horse poo will just rinse off with water so there's no problem IMO.

usualsuspect · 30/09/2011 22:36

Its still shit though

porcamiseria · 30/09/2011 22:42

its vegetarian poo, given that manure can be dried and used on veges, so YABU

move to hackney!

Lucyinthepie · 30/09/2011 23:41

Sometimes horses can't "trot on". They may be older, or be recovering from an injury. Trotting on the roads is out of the question for some horses, it's high impact and not beneficial for them.
Riders normally only stay two abreast with cars behind when a young horse is learning to go out and is being nanny'd by an older horse. Or they might do it when a rider is less experienced, and again is being nanny'd by a more experienced horse and rider. Maybe think in terms of someone learning to drive next time you're behind two horses like that. Everyone has to learn somehow.
Oh, and while we're at it, please don't anyone moan that they shouldn't be on the road and should ride in fields and woods etc. Just because you can see green spaces it doesn't mean that horses are allowed on them. Landowners can get a tad aggressive when they find that a horse and rider have strayed on to "moi land".
If you get fed up waiting behind a rider until it's safe to pass them, I'd like to see how you'd feel waiting behind a rider who's got off their horse with a little foldaway shovel and a Tesco carrier bag to scoop up some poo. Hmm

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 30/09/2011 23:50

We ride two abreast.
Shall I tell you why??
Because its safer. If you ride single file, drivers will always try to squeeze through between you and the oncoming traffic.
If you ride two abreast, there just isnt the room, and they must wait until it is safe to pass.
My 12 year old daughter had her stirrup clipped by a cars wing mirror, and her pony was nearly hit, in the space of 2 days.
She wears full hi viz, and has her bombproof pony well under control and well in to the side of the road. Still people have no respect.
So, that is why, we ride side by side, and drivers have to lump it. Drivers show no respect for our safety, so we must look out for ourselves.

discobeaver · 01/10/2011 16:24

God yes, bloody horse pooh, spoiling our beautiful tarmac roads, that we drive on in our planet friendly cars fuelled by the sun. Ruining our gorgeous housing estates where we live in harmony with nature, using no electricity or fossil fuels, and only rain water for our needs.
Bloody horses.

Pendeen · 01/10/2011 16:58

So, that is why, we ride side by side, and drivers have to lump it

Says it all really.

dawntigga · 01/10/2011 17:40

YANBU but there is nothing you or the horse riders can do about it really.

Try hitting a patch going round a corner on a motorbike.

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 01/10/2011 17:46

Did I miss something? Why is the debate suddenly about riding 2 abreast? Confused
