To think 5p for each carrier bag is a rip off

i just seen notices from the 1st October every shop in Wales has to charge a minimum of 5p per carrier bag, even the paper ones.

Now I guess that I could take my own but I don't think it is very hygienic

Uff. Wine + super tired = Spelling mistakes.

SardineQueen · 30/09/2011 08:26

That's interesting freddie and stoirin, thanks for those posts.

The law in Wales is going to be much more wide ranging than the law in Ireland then so it will be interesting to see how it pans out in Wales. I have a really strong feeling that shops at the top end and shops at the bottom end are going to look for ways around this.

BeyondLimitsOfTheLivingDead · 30/09/2011 12:54

Grin at "posh" shops using paper bags. No one been to Primark lately? (or even seen someone who's shopped there?)

SardineQueen · 30/09/2011 13:33

The point is that in Ireland shops can use paper bags. So when the law came in I am sure that all the posh shops (probably all clothes retailers full stop) switched to paper bags so as not to have to charge.

This will not be possible in Wales and I will be interested to see what happens. Imagine a rich type going into a fancy jewellers and spending a few grand on a watch, then being told they have to pay 5p for a bag to take it home in Grin

I wish supermarkets would make it so their cartons of milk didn't leak or at least weren't covered in milk on the outside - I once went to reuse a bag, to be hit by the stink of off milk Envy. Must be careful to use one for milk then throw that one away

SardineQueen · 30/09/2011 13:43

I use the milkman.

Fuck me if that is the only thing I have to preen about things are getting desperate Grin

StealthPolarBear · 30/09/2011 13:45

I want a milkman Angry

SardineQueen · 30/09/2011 13:51

Do you live in an area that definitely isn't served? There is an online checker thing now.

StealthPolarBear · 30/09/2011 13:52

No idea tbh! But I seem to buy big cartons every 2 or 3 days - probably best just getting a pint a day!

BeyondLimitsOfTheLivingDead · 30/09/2011 13:52

I'm in Wales Sardine
Looking forward to going to jewellers to get Xmas prezzies, taking my tesco carriers with me Grin

I wonder if Happy Meal Boxes are included...?

SardineQueen · 30/09/2011 13:53

Ours comes 3 x a week so the milk is always fresh.

SardineQueen · 30/09/2011 13:55

I think happy meal boxes would be included if the meal contains any item that is fully wrapped, like a burger.

But maybe they will just put 5p on the price of a happy meal? Is that allowed? Because it would defeat the purpose and that's the bit I don't get.

Anyhoo.

i am starting to feel like my knowledge of this is rather embarassingly extensive Grin

Oh dear, I'll just have to go to McDs tomorrow and have a Happy Meal to find out Sardine ... Grin

BeyondLimitsOfTheLivingDead · 30/09/2011 13:57

Milk and more dont deliver here :(

SardineQueen · 30/09/2011 13:58

OOH ooh oooh yes do that tomorrow and report back!

notso · 30/09/2011 14:13

I have had a quick read of the thread but still confused about the charges.
If I go to the fruit and veg shop and get carrots, apples, potatoes, onions and tomatoes, and they are all in separate paper bags for weighing, will I have to pay 5p for each bag.
Also when I buy cooked meat or cheese at the market it is usually put on a sheet of plastic wrap then put in a paper bag will that cost me an extra 10p for the two wrappings?

BeyondLimitsOfTheLivingDead · 30/09/2011 14:42

Nope, notso , food without packaging (meat from butchers, loose fruit and veg) can go into one bag.
Mince in bag = free. Bag of mince in second bag = 5p
Apples in bag = free. Packaged fruit/veg in bag = 5p

Grin

Back on McDs again fries aren't "fully wrapped" ??

notso · 30/09/2011 15:21

Thanks BLOTLD

Wonder if Maccies will do a bag for life?

basana · 30/09/2011 20:56

Smacks of a wind up

SecretNutellaFix · 30/09/2011 21:05

I assure you it is no fucking wind up.

missymarmite · 30/09/2011 21:54

I use all my plastic bags as bin liners. So now I will have to buy bin liners, or buy carrier bags. It's still the same amount of plastic bag! Makes no difference to the environment, just to my pocket!

but single usr shopping bags are rubbish as bin liners because of the holes...

notso · 06/10/2011 22:02

Well seeing as nobody else posted it I thought I would.
Went to McD's today and the following sign was displayed;
Bags in Wales now cost 5p, you are welcome to bring your own but please make sure it is hygenic and suitable for food.
As the following foods are partially wrapped if a bag contains solely these it will remain free, fries, hash browns, donuts, muffins.
