He is quite capable and has done it before. He gets up and turns on the tv and then sits and waits for me to sort the dog out and make his packed lunch then do a couple of jobs before I start brekkie.

It is not a time or work issue I just think it would be nice if he sorted himself out.

YANBU if my 10 year old didn't get his own breakfast he'd go hungry.

Only exception is the odd time I'll decide to make everyone a bacon sarnie but that's rare.

10yo should also be capable of making a packed lunch.

My DS made his own breakfast from 8.

He would have starved if not. Independence all the way here.

Once my DS CAN do something the expectation is that he does it.

Yanbu! You need to be stronger about rules - no tv until he's got his breakfast and consequences if he breaks the rule.

YADNBU - my 3 and 5 year old get their own breakfast. I have difficulty getting up and need help from DH in the mornings, so they are usually dressed before us and go and get their own. A 10 year old is more than capable!

My 5yo can make breakfast for herself and her sister if I leave the cereal out and make sure the milk isn't too full. And she can make peanut butter sandwiches.

I used to live with a five year old who sometimes made ME breakfast. Including a cup of tea, except sometimes he forgot to put the teabag in.

YANBU. DD makes her packed lunch the night before. The only thing she needs me for is reaching containers from wall cupboards.
She also learned to make poached eggs yesterday. Superb inventions made of silocone available from Asda. All you do is grease them, crack the egg into them, float them in boiling water and voila, one (or two) poached eggs. Slice or two of toast and you are set up until lunch time.

My 4 yo gets her own breakfast. We leave a little beaker with just enough milk for her cereal in the fridge.

When I lived at home until I bought my first house at 18 my mum did everything for me. So I suppose I have carried it on.

I never struggled when I lived on my own though just got on with it.

Oh and he makes cakes , makes his bed since he was 4.................does lots of other things but the brekkie has slid by me.

YANBU, my 3yo gets her own cereal if we leave the box down low enough. Pours her own juice or milk too. Actually, she's a bloody menace since she grew tall enough to reach the milk shelf in the fridge :o

My four year old gets her own breakfast (cereal) and my seven year old can get herself cereal and toast. On Sundays, she now gets us breakfast in bed ... Tea and toast. It's great

DS2 who is 10 makes his own breakfast and has done since he was 5 or so (albeit when he was younger with help from DS1 who is 13). If he gets up before me, he'll make some cereal - if we get up at the same time and I'm making my own breakfast or doing stuff in the kitchen then I'll get it for him.

Am that children make their own lunches! Never occurred to me to get DS2 doing that, although it might stop him complaining about the sandwich fillings I give him :)

It is funny how we all get them to do different stuff at different times but hopefully they will all turn out independent in the end.......

To be honest this is about you nt about Dd you need to be stronger in your rules

He sits around because he can if my dd didn't make his breakfast and Lunch and was just watching telly instead waiting for mummy maid to do it all he would be going hungry and

Btw my dd has been getting his own breakfast since he was 6 and doing lunch since he was 8

I am not a maid or a servant so everyone has to muck in and as i do the majority or housework its not a lot to ask

MY DS makes her own breakfast shes 7, she makes her brothers breakfast as wel whos 5. I am in the kitchen with them, she likes to feel grown up. Shes really god, she collecs the diry clothes, hangs the washing etc. I've never made her do it she just likes doing it.

Remove the reote from the telly. No telly untill he's got him self washed, dressed, packed his school bag, and fed himself.
