to wonder if posters on here would refer to Islam as "a load of old tosh"..

...in the same way that they think it is acceptable to ridicule Christianity. If a poster had started a thread about considering joining a mosque I wonder how many people would be prepared to post that Muslims were a bunch of bigoted fools due to their religious belief on homosexuality ? Or that a Hindu's beliefs were, to quote " a load of old tosh" ? If you don't think that would be alright to post, it's not alright to post it about Christianity either.

pointythings, I think you'll find many Christians are still capable of critical thinking, and don't take the Bible literally Wink

"abandoning critical thinking in favour of unthinking acceptance"

"I will never, ever take the Bible (or any other book) as a literal guide to my life"

Sariah · 22/09/2011 22:33

Did somebody call?

Meteorite · 22/09/2011 22:33

You're talking tosh, MrGin :o

MrGin · 22/09/2011 22:37

Why am I i talking tosh meteorite ?

Cocoflower · 22/09/2011 22:39

Atheists always do the spaghetti/ unicorn/pixie/ turtle yada yada thing don't they?! They think it is very original Grin.

Sariah · 22/09/2011 22:39

I practice my religion day to day. I can understand why others might consider it a load of tosh but it is a very personal thing and I am definitely a much nicer, better person since I started living the Gospel, so it has only had a positive effect on my life and those around me. I don't talk about my beliefs unless I am asked or unless something relevant comes up in conversation and then I am happy to share my experiences. Most of us put our faith in to something and I think people should be allowed to exercise that freedom once it is not impeding on anybody elses freedoms.

Meteorite · 22/09/2011 22:39

Just because you believe there is no God doesn't in my mind exclude you from being told it's tosh Wink

You believe my beliefs are tosh, and I believe that atheism is tosh incorrect.

ThePosieParker · 22/09/2011 22:43

I can never fathom why religious types don't get how ridiculous faith in a supernatural/omnipotent being is. It is the same as unicorns, fairies etc to Atheists. Except people that believe in Fairies don't influence our daily life, customs, knock upon our doors or expect respect for their beliefs.

ThePosieParker · 22/09/2011 22:43

Sorry.....ridiculous to Atheists /anti theists.

MrGin · 22/09/2011 22:44

Well exactly meteorite, but I'm not the one banging on about how Christians or athiests shouldn't be told their beliefs are bonkers.

You can't expect to be 'tosh' free if you proclaim a belief in the supernatural.

Cocoflower · 22/09/2011 22:47

Yet most people who believe in a higher being (religious or not) say it brings them incrediable happiness.

MrGin · 22/09/2011 22:52

And my final thought for the day before bed... or rather quote

' it stands to reason that all religions can't be right. Therefore it makes sense to conclude they are all wrong' C Hitchins.

If a scientologist was on here talking about aliens in mountains we'd all agree it was tosh. That's something I find odd. Someone if belief A can say how rediculous belief B is without ever realizing how ridiculous their own beliefs might seem to others.

Ho hum.

I do like a good religios thread :)

Meteorite · 22/09/2011 22:53

Actually why can't they all be right? Looking at the same thing, but just from slightly different directions?

"it stands to reason that all religions can't be right. Therefore it makes sense to conclude they are all wrong"

booyhoo · 22/09/2011 22:55

"Yet most people who believe in a higher being (religious or not) say it brings them incrediable happiness."

what does that prove? Confused and if they are all saying it about their own particular belief choice, does that mean all the different higher powers exist? if happines is proof that a higher power exists, and people with beliefs in different highe powers are proclaiming to be incredibly happy surelythat means all the gods must be real?

TheBeast · 22/09/2011 22:55

@Meteorite

However you spread it, please feel free to state here what "the good news" is.

As I asked above: Is it that the only way to get to heaven is to accept Jesus as your saviour? What happens to people who don't go to heaven?

I get that you believe that loving your neighbour is a Christian act but it doesn't amount to a belief.

What do you actually believe in that (a) makes you a Christian and (b) is worth spreading by whatever means?

MrGin · 22/09/2011 22:55

I apologise for the evenings terrible spelling :o

Cocoflower · 22/09/2011 22:55

If its such tosh why devote so much time and energy into thinking and discussing it? Confused

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 22/09/2011 22:56

They can't all be right because some are monotheistic, while others have many gods.

Sariah · 22/09/2011 22:56

All religions can contain elements of truth. Some may have access to more spiritual truths than others. Some may have lost some of the truths that they started off with because man twisted the truths or lost them or did not understand them.

timidviper · 22/09/2011 22:57

Sariah's post of 22:39 sums up my position too. My faith is very personal and I never discuss it unless directly asked.

I do think Christianity is an easy target; people who denigrate it realise it would not be "PC" to attack other religions as it could be classed as racism. I think it's a rather sad situation but each to their own.....

Cocoflower · 22/09/2011 22:58

I would say increased happiness is very good proof there is something.

Very good indeed. Even if its simply a placebo effect, its a damn good one.

MrGin · 22/09/2011 22:59

.... meteorite. If they were all right your God wouldn't be saying the only way to heaven is through him .

I'm beginning to doubt you are actually a Christian

JLK2 · 22/09/2011 22:59

Islam is worse than Christianity IMO. I don't see many people that base their whole lives around Christianity, it's just a nice thing to go to church on a Sunday.

GrimmaTheNome · 22/09/2011 23:01

Actually why can't they all be right? Looking at the same thing, but just from slightly different directions?

Because they aren't 'slightly different'. There are huge incompatibilities. Sufficient to get one lot wanting to kill t'other lot sometimes. The notion that they can all be right is intellectually dishonest whitewash. Sorry.

Sariah · 22/09/2011 23:02

I thinks it more that on our own we wouldnt have a hope of getting far and that if God is a God of Justice then we would have to take the hit. In order for God to exercise Mercy and as we all know mercy can never rob justice, there had to be an intermdiary to make up the difference and take the hit. Jesus fulfilled this role and took the hit for all of us. This is why it is only through him that we can make up the difference. Thats what I think anyway.
