to wonder if posters on here would refer to Islam as "a load of old tosh"..

...in the same way that they think it is acceptable to ridicule Christianity. If a poster had started a thread about considering joining a mosque I wonder how many people would be prepared to post that Muslims were a bunch of bigoted fools due to their religious belief on homosexuality ? Or that a Hindu's beliefs were, to quote " a load of old tosh" ? If you don't think that would be alright to post, it's not alright to post it about Christianity either.

So the only rational position on fairies, unicorn, vampires and dragons is that they may exist?

NormanTebbit · 22/09/2011 17:30

I do think there is space for politeness though. I wouldn't be rude about someone's beliefs.

said · 22/09/2011 17:31

How can it be a "belief" that there is no god? That would presume that you think a god could exist. I'm not taking the opposite view of someone who believes in god; I'm sort of watching the issue as bystander, if that makes sense

Atheism isn't a 'belief' unless you're 10. It's refuting of beliefs.

Megfox · 22/09/2011 17:32

If you believe that all religion is a load of tosh, then you're missing the fundamental difference that separates faith from religion.

Religion is something that is TAUGHT, while Faith is something that comes from within the heart and soul of the believer.

I believe in UFOs. I don't believe that they're alien spacecraft, but I do believe that people have seen objects in the sky which they couldn't identify.Grin

But volunteering and charity work (the 'being good' bit) is not exclusive to religion.

Don't get me started on the Salvation Army.

As for charitywork it's very commendable but isn't exclusive to the religious.

mpsw · 22/09/2011 17:36

Atheism isn't a refuting of beliefs - it is an active belief there is no god.

For example, Buddhists are atheists.

If you mean seeking after truth, being open-minded and looking to evidence and reason as far as is possible to the human mind; then you mean agnostic.

Empjusa · 22/09/2011 17:36

Megfox That makes no sense. Of course people can say all religion is a load of tosh, especially considering it is taught.

LetThereBeRock · 22/09/2011 17:36

Sorry.Grin

Megfox · 22/09/2011 17:36

Well, why don't you believe in Unicorns.....?

They're as real as anything!

I fail to see how you can see a difference between belief in unicorns and UFOs, when you claim to have no belief either way......

Empjusa · 22/09/2011 17:38

"I fail to see how you can see a difference between belief in unicorns and UFOs"

UFO = Unidentified flying object

Lovingkindness is what matters. All the rest is excuses and window dressing.

LetThereBeRock · 22/09/2011 17:56

Otherkin?Confused Are those anything like Furries? They sound even more disturbing if that's possible.

I think in answer to the OP, why is Christianity singled out one reason is that you don't get many ( if any ) posts along the lines of ' I'm thinking of converting to Islam' or " Isn't Islam great ' . You do however see a fair amount of posts about Christianity ergo negative comments are going to be posted about the religion mentioned. Christianity.

It's not rocket science is it.

I think if the OP feels Christianity draws the short straw in our society these days, and that Islam is given special favour, head up to an area with a high Muslim population. I bet they feel highly criticised in our society and in the media.

An example ? The Norwegian mass murderer of recent news. Initial speculation defaulted on most news channels to it being an Islamist terrorist , before it was discovered to be a rightwing Christian nut job.

Dazzlewards · 22/09/2011 18:10

Of course it's a load of old tosh!

Cocoflower · 22/09/2011 18:12

People get pulled apart (and rightly so) for anything sexist, homophobic, disablist or racist.

Yet its fine to attack someone beacuse they have faith. This needs to stop. Any sniff of the fact your not an atheist and people will literally follow you around a thread being as vile as possible.

Just seems to me some people have an inherent need to hate a certain group of people and the only "acceptable" group left is the Christians.

Its astounding how much anger and venom some people have for Christians.

Why would anyone want to show themselves as intolerant and prejudjuced is beyond me.

Gonzo33 · 22/09/2011 18:15

Not read all 4 pages, but I think all religion is a load of old tosh. However, I do believe in a persons right to choose and believe in a religion.

ThePosieParker · 22/09/2011 18:16

Intolerance and prejudiced are part and parcel of most religion.

Homophobia and sexism are fundamental to most religion.
