I asked my 5yo if Peppa and George had died in vain...

... when he was so busy mucking around at tea that he completely failed to eat his pork sausage (which I don't eat).

I know IABU a bit but my DH was quite shocked that I would have traumatised him. He, on the other hand, suggested that "Peppa and George get made into sausages" would be quite a good episode.

Surely this would put you dc off sausauges totally though?! Im not sure it would encourage them at all....

Anyone mentioning to me what animal my meat used to be puts me off... so if someone said Peppa & George that would be it for me!

I told 3yr old dd1 that chickens die, we cook them and then eat them.

Is that bad?

YANBU.

Pork is dead pig. If people can't handle that idea then they shouldn't be eating it and the sooner they are told what the dead thing on their plate is the better.

Its a lighthearted comment, and I assume your kids know that meat comes from animals. I also assume they're your kids and well used to your humour without it causing distress.

We have a pet fish, we also spend ages at the fish counter in the supermarket talking about dead fish, we eat dead fish, but not OUR fish. They get it, we're real.

My dsd is almost 8 and has very recently stopped eating fishfingers. When I asked her why the sudden change, she told me it was because fish are alive and she doesn't like the idea of eating animals. She clearly has no idea about meat though - she happily eats ham sandwiches most days for lunch and spag bol/chicken pasta for dinner

we were watching Charlottes Web at the MIL's house. DD said 'why dont spring pigs make it to Christmas?' i said 'never mind that, eat up your bacon!'....

I remember telling the kids in my nursery that we have to "Gently kill the pigs first" before getting sausages. I'm a country person. I've gutted and cooked fish with the children before. They loved it.

I've always been honest with the kids about where meat comes from.

This has helped now we've moved into the dinosaur phase and learnt about carnivores. Now they want to know who killed the food on their plate, and was there blood? To which I reply 'the butcher' and 'yes, it's delicious' as we tuck into the roast beef...

Hilarious that he thought it would be a good episode. My two year old DD will look at cows in a field and go yummy and if we are having beef for tea she will moo this applies to pigs and chickens (appropiate sound effects that is.) We are country folk though.

When is the right age to make the connection between peppa and sausages, shaun and the lamb roast or daisy the cow and the tasty steak? I usually deal with things when they pop up in conversation, but this just hasn't popped up yet.

Today my DS1 (3) told me he protects animals. (he knows eggs come from chickens, wool comes from sheep, milk comes from cows, chocolate eggs com from rabbits, ...) But he definately doesn't know where ham comes from. He's in for such a shock. He's going to be so upset. :(

I think I'll buy a dinosaur book.

The fabulous village butcher where I live helped me explain the correlation between DD's cuddly George and sausages and bacon.
Now if you ask her what Peppa and George are made of she says 'Bacon'. She's 3.
YANBU at all. There is nothing wrong with children knowing where their food comes from.

My no3 son won't eat pork because of "Zoe Pig" who is two stuffed toys Mushabellies, I hate hate hate that name, goodness what they were thinking when they thought it up and an online cyber pet not on the Mushabelly web site which is craptastic and he knows pork is pigs. We had the gammon conversation last week when I was doing the slow cooked in cola thing and he wouldn't eat that either. He does eat sausages but that's because when he said "what's in a sausage?" I said that it depended what sort of sausage it was, they're made from lots of different things and he has somehow never asked directly if a particular sausage on his plate is pork so I haven't had to actually lie.

Why do so many parents feel it necessary to lie to their DC - or at least be economical with the truth - about the fact that an animal was killed to provide the meat on their plates?

Surely if it's so acceptable to eat meat or serve it to children you should have nothing to hide or be ashamed of and there should be no need to cover up the truth?

We took ds to a lambing weekend at a local farm a while ago. We had a look round the baby lambs, then went to the very delicious lamb burger stall they had set up outside their cafe. Ds asked (cheerfully) if we could go and kill one of the lambs to make another burger as he was still hungry.

I fear I may have been too literal as he seems incredibly callous. Hopefully your ds will be the same.

we were also tucking into a plate of bbq ribs each whislt watching a wildlife programme. the lion killed the zebra and was licking the (very gory) ribs. My dd said something on the lines of poor zebra, but i just said that everything has to eat something. then looked down to an equally gory bbq rib!

when we went to the liverpool museum, they have animal skulls that you can actually hold. I showed her the zebra skull, with nibbly teeth cos they nibble grass, and the lion head, with its pointy meat eating teeth and the elephant skull with its big grindy teeth. then we discussed her teeth. she needs all types because we are supposed to eat everything. she accepted this with the wisdom of childhood.

though still havent laid out a direct connection to the meat in the field and the meat on her plate.

I don't get the lying either. DS has always known that meat equals animal.

If you can't handle that knowledge you have no business eating meat.

If she asks outright i will tell her the truth. I have no problem with the truth.

We are a split household, I am vegetarian, dp isn't, I have always been totally honest about where meat comes from in the hope that the dc's might come over to the green side.

No joy yet.

Tbf though we hardly ever have meat as I do all the cooking, sometimes dp will cook it or if we are out, they will often choose meat.

Tewekespeggy and Tillyscoutsmum, don't you think it's better that they know meat comes from killing animals? When do you plan on sharing it with them?
