there are no words for this, i just can not understand this or any one who would condone this behaviour under the bracket of the country is in debt so everyone has to take a hit, the tories are making tough decisions.

guardian take on this

this had me screaming incoherently at my screen...

"Speaking of terminal illness is clearly emotive and if they are on their deathbed they will clearly not be going back to work, but if someone is not in that position they may be able to lead a normal life which could involve work. The process of working may even be helpful in giving them a sense of being useful and prolonging their lives"

That little gem came from the DWP...sod magic bullets and cures for cancer; all that's needed is a few days hard graft on minimum wage.

Empjusa · 22/09/2011 16:47

VeryLittleGravitas Wow. Just wow.

agree, some of the other scroungers should be first in line''

scroungers?

usualsuspect · 22/09/2011 16:54

There are no words

BakeliteBelle · 22/09/2011 16:56

My friend took a long time to die of breast cancer. However, she was way too ill to work (health service professional) for over two years and on several occasions went into respiratory arrest and nearly died after chemo. She was hanging onto life by a thread for so long, fighting to stay alive for her children.

Why is anyone surprised? It's the coalition after all. They just don't care

carernotasaint · 22/09/2011 17:27

The reason this Gov. is getting away with this so far is because of the attitude towards benefit claimants in general (just take a little trip into the moneysavingexpert forums to see this in action) There are some particularly nasty people on there who start and contribute to threads slagging off disabled people AND their carers. "cough cough" ahem one called darkpool springs to mind.
Also upthread someone used the term "scroungers" While i am not naive and i do realise there are people who will try to play the system, using this word in a sweeping generalisation is not helpful and reinforces the discrimination against ill people and those on benefits. The Daily Mail Sun and Daily Star and the now thankfully defunct News of the World do this A LOT.
I remember seeing a headline in the Guardian about disabled people that read "once we were the "poor dears" Now we are the "benefit cheats"
So they are either patronised or vilified.
Finally this affects everyone because anyone can get ill at ANY time.
No one chooses to be ill you money grabbing Tory fuckwits.

This is only for contributory ESA though, which isn't means-tested. If an ill person (terminally ill or otherwise) gets income-based ESA, they will still be entitled, so they won't starve. But those who have a partner or spouse who is earning enough, or have savings which bring them above the income-based threshold, they will no longer get the benefit. The state generally expects partners to support those who are out of work and for people to use their savings for living costs, which is why other benefits like income support or income-based JSA are based on household income.

Under the current arrangements, a woman married to a wealthy man or with thousands in savings would continue to get contributory ESA even though her husband would be expected to support her, which is hardly a good use of financial resources.

Sevenfold · 22/09/2011 18:51

I am more shocked that anyone actually is shocked about this, did you think they would stop at the disabled?

kblu · 22/09/2011 18:53

Lets just hope if I get terminally ill that I only get given a prognosis of six months then. Unbelievable.

spookshowangellovesit · 22/09/2011 19:04

i know it is the belief that the disabled children are to blame because their scrounging parents a sucking the country dry, because lets be fair its not that had to look after disabled children. and now come on you dying scroungers you dont need to be at home struggling and being cared for go to work.
you would have disabled people killing themselves because they had no money or support, its like going back to the dark ages. i think that will happen again and what will happen with people dying that are having money taken off them god only knows.
can anyone really believe that these people are scrounging benefit thieves?

They're sending out letters and it's not even been approved yet? It's bad enough that it's even likely to happen, but just nasty that it's being handled in this way.

OpinionatedMum · 22/09/2011 19:10

I am not shocked, we have the Tories in power folks. Evil bastards.

spookshowangellovesit · 22/09/2011 19:11

i love the bit in the guardian obviously if they are on their death bed we will not be making them work.

Well, us semi-normal crips will have to do it for them, Riven. 'If not us, then who?' as the saying goes.

madhairday · 22/09/2011 20:10

:( :( :(

But not shocked. ATOS are inhuman. It's about time people realised what has been going on for a while now. :(

Grumpla · 22/09/2011 20:19

Yes, but you see if they're terminally ill they aren't going to be around to vote at the next election anyway are they? So what's the point of wasting money on dying chavs when we could be spending it on lovely skiing trips and duck palaces?

Stop being a drain on the nation's resources you lazy disableds and selfish cancer patients. Work til you drop. LITERALLY.

I'm afraid that really does seem to be the attitude of this fucking government. Angry Angry Angry

Northernlurker · 22/09/2011 20:26

Bastard government.

That's all I have to say.

Cocoflower · 22/09/2011 20:30

What a nasty thing to do to the dying.

Very sad to hear.

DementedHousewife · 22/09/2011 20:41

What the fuck! tory bastards putting the 'n' in cuts.
Whoever proposed this needs a lesson in humanity.

This must be a first, a Mumsnet thread where everybody agrees...

Northernlurker · 22/09/2011 20:54

The DWP spokesperson has obviously never had a relative with a terminal illness. If they had, they would know that 'a normal life' is totally out of the question - and in fact assuming that 'normal' is possible when facing a potentially painful and protracted final illness is deeply offensive.

giraffesCantChaChaCha · 22/09/2011 20:56

cunts

electra · 22/09/2011 21:07

How much longer are we going to have to put up with these fascist wankers? I am so worried - do you think they will get in for another term?????
