to hate it when people refer to their duel heritage children as.....

Parachute2011 · 16/09/2011 11:13

1/3 of this, 1/4 of that, 3/4 of the other. People are people and I hate to hear them being referred to like slices of pizza. If someone is going to be racist to you, they would ask if your grandfather was Swiss before insulting you.

I do think that the many cultures that are part of the child's life should be celebrated. But IMO referring to a child or adult as anything less than a whole person is insulting.

Nowt wrong with Mixed race

Dual Heritage is indeed PC Public Sector wankery.

Half/quarter Caste etc Plain wrong

Bassets Dolly Mixture is a preferred term round these here parts i.e. "Oooo you're a right Dolly Mixture you are. What kind are you? Sweeeeet." Grin

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 16/09/2011 13:21

My DC refer to themselves as 5/8ths Irish. That would really piss you off.

Andrewofgg · 16/09/2011 13:22

I had a colleague who was 1/4 Vietnamese, 3/4 French, and entirely delightful!

holidaysoon · 16/09/2011 13:22

I don't get the Swiss thing am i being thick?

CaptainNancy · 16/09/2011 13:25

CaptainNancy · 16/09/2011 13:32

whose?

porcamiseria · 16/09/2011 14:17

whats the issue????? its nice to be dual heritage get the best of lots of worlds

you are overthinking

whackamole · 16/09/2011 14:23

Well, sometimes it is necessary. I am half Greek-Cypriot, half English. I often have to explain this as I have a Greek surname. I am not obviously of mixed race as I am white and English-looking (ie - peaches and cream complexion Wink)

I think you are massively over-thinking it. It is a bit annoying when people claim to identify with their great great great great great granny who is from Ireland or whatever, but so what?

choccyp1g · 16/09/2011 14:34

I prefer mixed-race for DS rather than dual heritage which sounds as though it is exactly two races, when in fact he is quite a mixture.

Mule heritage better suits his personality (extreme stubborness inherited from MIL)

meditrina · 16/09/2011 14:42

I'm now thinking of the HH Charles II song "I'm a little bit Spanish and a little bit Dane, but 100% party animal - champagne?"

By the way, spiderpig8, I think you can get to thirds if you have a mixed race grandparent (will post again if I work it out properly!)

aldiwhore · 16/09/2011 14:44

Phew, I'm glad Mixed Race isn't seen as derogatory.

activate · 16/09/2011 14:46

Duel heritage - ROFL

sounds like they're the product of a fight

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 16/09/2011 14:49

My kids have jewel heritage because they are little blighters gems ...

My kids are English by birth but 1/2 Algerian, 1/4 Welsh and 1/4 Irish by descent.

I guess that's a Merguez, Leek and Potato pizza then Hmm

Tchootnika · 16/09/2011 14:52

jewel heritage - definitely the way forward!
Thank you, hester Grin

... love the 'heritage pizza', too, Chaz

  • shall add both to the verbal melting pot.
GoingForABlog · 16/09/2011 14:58

I always say mine are duel nationality, I would feel silly saying duel heritage because it sounds so wanky. They aren't mix race, but have two nationalities.

If asked I'd say they are half this and half that.

ForYourDreamsAreChina · 16/09/2011 15:28

I tend to say dd is half and half (2 nationalities) simply because she looks so much more like me than her father, that sometimes local people think she's 100% furrin like me.

I describe myself as British because that's my nationality. English I don't believe has been a nationality since we were all running round in woad and beating each other with clubs.

I agree with the poster on p2 who says far more unreasonable are those who like to sex up their long distant heritage and make out they still are something that's been so diluted over the years that none of it is left. My cousin's husband's grandparents emigrated to Britain in the 1920s,he doesn't speak their language, neither did his parents, he's been to their country of origin once and yet flies the flag for every important sporting event and is apparently going to be buried there. Hmm

DoMeDon · 16/09/2011 15:32

I say I am half and half - usually when idiots are being racist, then I say 'oooh I'm half...'. Cue embarrassed looks and 'well I wasn't being fun.ny ..' type comments.

Why on earth would you think I am calling mysef a pizza!?!?

forehead · 16/09/2011 15:39

I love when people descibe their origin in more detail, i find it really interesting.

The term 'dual heritage' is deffo public sector wankery.

Atropos · 16/09/2011 15:40

I think it's hugely important to understand where we have come from because that is part of what makes us who we are. I am half Dutch and half Irish (my father he was orange and my mother she was green) and my daughter has some more Irish ancestry and some English. We are also shaped by the fact the she, her dad and I were all born, grew up and were educated in this country. What I really hate is the way that mixed race black and white, for some reason, always makes the offspring black ? look at adoption rules and, indeed, President Obama, the first black president, as if his white parent doesn't count. Race is a silly way of categorising people, but ancestry isn't.

ScarletLady01 · 16/09/2011 15:43

I never realized "mixed race" was derogatory, where was that memo? My step daughter is mixed race and she is referred to as such if the situation requires it. I know plenty of people who refer to themselves as mixed race.

Dual heritage sounds stupid...it reminds of things like "people of colour" and other such nonsensical terms

Duel heritage on the other hand sounds quite cool...brings up images of knights and gentry.

Altrops, this is the wrong thread to dicuss what mixed race peopl regard themselves as. Read threads on this issue in order to UNDERSTAND

Pendeen · 16/09/2011 16:34

"Duel" (dual) Heritage?

What an odd phrase. Is it really as some have suggested yet another PC phrase invented by some jobsworth to avoid using terms such as "mixed race"?

Parachute2011 YANBU in "hating" the phrase or "1/4 this-or-that" race.

As someone who is most definitely 100% Cornish but also classed a British and an EU citizen I am a little baffled by the endless sub-divisions of ethnicity for those who are recent arrivals in the UK.

grumpypants · 16/09/2011 16:40
