to think that you have no right to an opinion if you don't read the whole thread?

This is something that REALLY annoys me. A thread can change direction within a couple of posts - the OP gives more information, changes their opinion etc - yet still, posters give their opinion based solely on the OP, taking no notice whatsoever of the rest of the thread.

It comes across as horribly crass sometimes too.

I do appreciate that you don't always have time to read the whole thing, especially if it's pages long - but then, save your opinion until you DO have time, yes? Please?

Grrrr.

beautifulswan - yes, she phones and blamed some local kids Hmm rather than her twat of a husband.
Was it a troll do you know?

SurprisEs · 13/09/2011 12:58

I understand what you are saying but sometimes the pages are full of pointless and unrelated coments that just fill in spaces and I tend to in those cases loose interest and skip to the end.

beautifulswan · 13/09/2011 13:37

Thanks Clam, I was following the thread earlier and wondered what the OP would do. Didn't think it was a troll.

I have spent many hours late at night following an extremely long thread, by the end of it my eyes are so sore and I'm usually too tired to post anything so would excuse people if it were my long thread!

AbbyAbsinthe · 13/09/2011 13:47

The Sky man thread - her husband had hidden the show because he thought that the Sky man was flirting with her. Then it transpired that this was the tip of the iceberg, and that her partner was horribly controlling, telling her stuff like she wasn't 'allowed' to but her own underwear as this was now HIS job Hmm

I don't think she was a troll, I think she needed some help, but the thread was deleted as it turned into a massive bunfight and troll hunt.

So...how many pages does a thread have to be before you just read page 1, maybe 2 and then skip to the end (be honest now.... :o )

With me its about 7 or 8.

AbbyAbsinthe · 13/09/2011 13:48

shoe - not show, obviously.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 13/09/2011 13:49

Whatmeworry... I never know how many pages a thread is, I've got it on a continuous run, latest post last. It's great.

LoveInAColdClimate · 13/09/2011 13:51

I agree with the OP, actually - people should at least read all of the OP's posts before commenting.

ViviPru · 13/09/2011 13:52

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe me too - makes it seem more manageable somehow

Proudnscary · 13/09/2011 13:52

Of course you are being unreasonable - we can all do what the feck we like, thanks very much.

And we don't all have time to wade through swathes of posts. It's not 'lazy' or 'ignorant'.

beautifulswan · 13/09/2011 13:57

Abby, did you say she wasn't allowed to put her own underwear on? I wonder if she'll start a new thread in relationships.

clam · 13/09/2011 14:27

Think that should have been "not allowed to buy her own underwear." He said it was apparently his job to do that.

marcopront · 13/09/2011 14:41

The best example was the one where the OP asked if she should call an ambulance because she had labour pains. She came back a week later and announce the birth of her babies. A page later she was still being told to call an ambulance.

Megatron · 13/09/2011 14:56

YABU. Sorry but sometimes you may not have much time but just want to stick your oar it. Tis what it's all about sometimes! Smile

AbbyAbsinthe · 13/09/2011 16:08

Yes, sorry, banana fingers. She wasn't allowed to buy her own underwear. Amongst other things. I really hope she comes back, she needed some support, I feel.

OP posts:
AbbyAbsinthe · 13/09/2011 16:10

I do understand that Megatron - but you don't get the full picture of the circumstances if you don't read it all. That was why I gave the example of the Sky man shoe thread - people were popping on at the end of it taking the piss - when by that point, the thread had turned into something quite different.

OP posts:
LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 13/09/2011 16:28

I didn't even read that thread, any of it, but I have to ask why the OP posted it in AIBU not in relationships? It must have been quite obvious that it was a relationship issue. Posters have to take some responsibility for what they post and where, surely? AIBU isn't like 'Relationships', the posting style is different. I don't believe that people just 'stumble' into AIBU, they acctively seek it out. Why, if they want tea and sympathy?

missymarmite · 13/09/2011 16:31

YABU. Some times I don't have time to read reams and reams of posts, and I only want to reply to the OP, not the thread. I usually try to at least read the first and last page, but if there are 15 pages, no, I wouldn't expect anyone to read the whole thing. Sorry, I don't agree on this one.

missymarmite · 13/09/2011 16:40

Of course, if it were a thread that I started, then I think it would be rude not to read comments/advice that people have taken time to write.

AbbyAbsinthe · 13/09/2011 16:43

It's not really that I expect people to read pages and pages of a really long thread - I just don't see how you can be qualified to comment if you don't have the full story.

OP posts:
ouryve · 13/09/2011 16:45

YABU.

And I won't be reading any other posts in this thread.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 13/09/2011 17:09

Qualified to comment? On a chatboard? Purlease.

OP... Do you really think that anybody posts whole whole story at any time? Or that it's the truth?

I don't think this thread is going to get to pages and pages anyway somehow.

Cocoflower · 13/09/2011 17:26

Look it another way- perhaps the OP is pleased their orginal reason for asking is actually on track being answered again.

I haven't read the whole thread now and often don't. Any more than 2 pages and I scan at best. Who has the time to trawl through pages of posts on every thread? If you miss a major detail some smug fucker observant person always comes on a post later to let you know so why bother. YABU.
