To think it is shocking boots don't give points on first formula

This was brought to my attention again because a friend of mine has just had a baby tried to breastfeed suffered mastitis and started feeling really down so she switched to formula, when she handed over her advantage card she was told points were not given on first formula , she felt bad enough she could not breast feed and now it feels like she is getting penalised for it elsewhere.

I found the same thing when I had ds a year ago when I was told ,you don't get points for first milk I felt really bad too it's like your being punished for not breastfeeding in a way .

This is in no way a bf vs ff debate I just think it's wrong of boots to do this.

i am not bothered by no points on formula milk. i am not bothered by the fact that my dh staff discount is not included in reghards to formula.

what i am bothered about is that my on couldnt breastfeed.

why? because no-one would listen to me.

misdee · 08/09/2011 13:52

'my son couldnt breastfeed'

belgo · 08/09/2011 13:53

Really misdee your ds couldn;t breastfeed? I know you have several years experience of bfing your dds. It just shows it's not always easy. May I ask what happened with your ds?

MorrisZapp · 08/09/2011 13:54

I think there's the usual heatedness and bent logic on both sides here, as usual. I don't think Milas points are bonkers. I suppose you think 'You shouldn't get points for FF cos I didn't get them for BF' is a very sharp observation?

SiamoFottuti · 08/09/2011 13:57

It is actually, its about the only salient point on this thread. The reason you don't get points is to make BF and FF comparable and neither is incentivised with money. If that is too difficult for you to understand, why not have another whine about how awful it is to be a majority and how persecuted you are?

MilaMae · 08/09/2011 13:57

Siamo clearly you're one of the bullying pro bfers that abound on threads like this ie can't cope with the fact that others may have a different opinion to you so you hurl the ishoooooos insult in.

Since we all moved on long ago from that I thought it was now MN etiquette not to hurl that particular insult into threads in the same way posters refrain from using the term BF Nazi .

misdee · 08/09/2011 13:58

exactly, i fed dd3+$ for 2years+ so i knew what i was doing. i knew something wasnt right.

he was v v slow to gain and Hv wanted to refer him to paeds. i had/have bad ond and couldnt cope so put him on formula (still makes me cry now) at 3months old.

he has a tongue tie and lip tie. he cannot suck effectively to get enough milk out to grow well. he looked like a skeleton.

i expressed loads for him, but couldnt keep up.

breaks my heart that he isnt getting breastmilk, and is having formula. making bottles is a faff i could do without.

and we used c+g at £7.59 a tub as local corner shop and garages stock it. plus i didnt want all those 'extras' apparently SMA hiked up their prices recently to £9 a tin Shock

formula companies have people by the short and curlies. its expensive because they make it so.

sheeplikessleep · 08/09/2011 14:00

1st stage formula isn't allowed to be promoted, in any way shape or form.

Too bloody right - the formula companies would take advantage (and did in the past!) if they could.

Advantage points is promotion.

What is so hard for some people to understand about that?

SiamoFottuti · 08/09/2011 14:00

Haha, couldn't be further from the truth. You observational skills are terrible.

You equated not getting reward points on formula to being treated like a criminal. You obviously have some kind of ishoo somewhere. Perhaps you just have a hyperbole problem then?

Moominsarescary · 08/09/2011 14:02

Well that's a daft comment for a start, you don't pay to bf so that's a incentive money wise for a start

sheeplikessleep · 08/09/2011 14:03

First stage milk should be available.
First stage milk shouldn't be promoted.

SiamoFottuti · 08/09/2011 14:04

um, no, its not, you don't recieve any money either. Keep up.

belgo · 08/09/2011 14:04

Sorry to hear that misdee, I hope you are getting the help you need with pnd. It sounds like you have done your very best for your ds, but sometimes everyone needs outside help and it just isn't available.

MilaMae · 08/09/2011 14:05

Giving loyalty points isn't promoting.

Eglu · 08/09/2011 14:06

We have had this thread before. YABU

misdee · 08/09/2011 14:06

thanks belgo. doing ok with pnd, good support group etc. i think ds not feeding well was a catalyst to my decline as well as other factors.

SiamoFottuti · 08/09/2011 14:06

take it to the WHO and your own government, seems they disagree with you. Can you tell us why anyone should think you know better?

belgo · 08/09/2011 14:06

'Giving loyalty points isn't promoting'

the law and the businesses disagree with that comment.

misdee · 08/09/2011 14:07

loyalty points is promoting. two stores side by side. same price on formula. one others points, one doesmt. where do u go?

sheeplikessleep · 08/09/2011 14:10

MilaMae - why do you think stores such as boots give points? for totally selfless reasons? or to make more money through customer retention?

Katiepoes · 08/09/2011 14:10

It's not allowed as it's maerketing. To avoid any discussion of what is and isn't promotion ALL marketing activities around first formula are banned within the EU. So being 'shocked' is a bit over the top.

MorrisZapp · 08/09/2011 14:11

Blimey Siamo. Aggressive much?

How can FF be 'incentivised' when BF is completely free?

Ok, let's look at it:

'I'm not going to waste money on FF, I'm going to BF my baby rather than spend £9 on aptamil'

'Oh hang on, no, I've just seen that you can get Boots points on that, so in fact I will FF after all'.

I hardly think a 10% discount is going to incentivise a choice when the other choice is totally free of charge.

Boots offer points on all of their products bar a few, so it's hardly incentivising it anyway - and they also offer points (and 3 for 2 at the moment) on all manner of BF paraphenalia.

MilaMae · 08/09/2011 14:11

Having a huge placard outside a shop proclaiming the sale of cheap formula is promoting however giving people back points on overpriced goods with no advertising is not promoting.

By your logic Boots are promoting the buying of junk food and over use of cheap Calpol.Hmm

sheeplikessleep · 08/09/2011 14:13

promotion isn't just having huge placards and explicit price messages.
yes, if they offer points on junk food and calpol (do they really? surprised by this), then they are promoting it.
