My name is an English spelling of a foreign name and I think it's completely pointless.

In fact, my name is probably one that would end up on that list up there. Angry

NotJustKangaskhan · 06/09/2011 12:24

Agreed SchrodingersMew - it's often forgotten that many of the 'normal English' names are oddly spelt variants nicked from other languages. This thread has reminded me of why I always put my much loved Hebrew names in the middle - spell them correctly up from and people think it's just to be unique rather than trying to remain true to the original name.

Like earlier in the thread it was discussed how eyebrows were raised when asking to spell John - when really, you would need to ask since Jon (or Jonathan) would be closer to the original transliteration of the name (closest would be Yonatan) and still a very commonly used name in English.

SchrodingersMew · 06/09/2011 12:29

NotJustKangaskhan Someone who understands how I feel! Phew!

I hate my name because it's spelled incorrectly, I might hate it less if it was spelled in the usual way it is in it's country of origin. No one would get it mixed up with other names if it was spelled correctly.

This is the exact reason I refuse to name my DS Erik or Eric.

Laquitar · 06/09/2011 12:41

The funny thing is that many foreign names that are poncy here are common in their origin country. So for the teacher or interviewer to make correct assumptions she will need to know the dcs background.

My dcs have names that you call here 'middle class names' but they are 'working class names' for us.

Whatmeworry · 06/09/2011 12:56

My name is an English spelling of a foreign name

Most English names are :)

In fact the whole language consists of the bastardised spellings of a mishmash of other languages :o

ViviPru · 06/09/2011 13:01

OP, I'm now curious, with this thread in mind, is there any significance to no with a double i?

SchrodingersMew · 06/09/2011 13:04

WhatMeWorry What annoys me is my name clearly isn't British IYSWIM?

fanjobanjowanjo · 06/09/2011 13:13

Silly spellings annoy me about names (changed by the person for no apparent reason other than to try to be more interesting). I was at school with a "Zoe" who changed the spelling to "Zowie" which reminds me of Scooby Doo or something.

There was also a "Laura" who changed her spelling to "Lora".

Fecking eejits.

SchrodingersMew · 06/09/2011 13:18

My DP had an Ex called Lora.... He must like people with silly misspelled names! :o

SchrodingersMew · 06/09/2011 13:20

I've just googled Lora and apparently that is a true spelling...

I guess "Laura" is the misspelled version.

worzelswife · 06/09/2011 13:22

Schrodingers I went to school with an Eirik. It's lovely.

I do think that in twenty years time there is going to be a huge divide between those called Jayden, Kai, Alesha and Jade and those called Matilda, Jemima, Theo and Monty. It is going to be so much harder for the first group to get anywhere in life. It seems like a much bigger divide than when I was at school, just in people's actual names.

SchrodingersMew · 06/09/2011 13:25

Thanks Worzel :). Do you happen to know if people got his name wrong a lot?

fanjobanjowanjo · 06/09/2011 13:27

"Lora" in this case is the misspelled version as "Laura" appears on the birth cert is my point.

RedRubyBlue · 06/09/2011 13:28

I once met an Asian woman called Pretty, her mother preferred the English spelling rather than the proper spelling of Pritti.

SchrodingersMew · 06/09/2011 13:30

Fanjo I know, I was just pointing out that until I searched it I believed the spelling "Lora" to be the incorrect version. :o

RedRuby I know someone who works in a Nursery and there's a little girl named "Hiya". Confused

worzelswife · 06/09/2011 13:36

As far as I remember everyone was fine with pronouncing it, no problems Smile. Eirikr I would struggle with though so you're probably making a good decision there if you want people to find it easy.

fanjobanjowanjo · 06/09/2011 13:37

Fair nuff schro! Is an interesting point - i didn't know Lora was right!

PeelMeAnOrange · 06/09/2011 13:39

This made me cringe -

"Dakota!! Dakota!! get 'ere now!"

I mean, Dakota as a name is bad enough but said in a rough fishwife accent sounds laughable. Poor kid.

Empusa · 06/09/2011 13:40

Tbh, having a more unusual spelling of my name has actually not been a problem. Sure it can be annoying spelling it every single time, but it's nice to stand out a little, and when I was at school it was easier to find my stuff as it stood out from the traditional spellings.

Some people will find it annoying, some people will love it. You can't really know in advance. I've even had people with the more usual spelling of my name tell me they wish they had my more unusual spelling. You just can't win.

SchrodingersMew · 06/09/2011 13:45

Worzel Phew! Thanks. :)
Fanjo Apparently it's of Spanish origin, I had no idea either!

Wossisface · 06/09/2011 14:06

My dd2 is 10 months and I'm really starting to regret her name Sad. Reading this I'm starting to feel very guilty.
Her name is traditional but on dp's request we chose the unusual spelling, a Brit celeb has the same spelling. Kinda feel like I've already put a nail in her professional coffin iykwim Sad Sad

Fuck it I'll say what it is then I will get the honest answer from mn jury. The name is Fearne.

(I wanted to call her Charlotte but in my drugged up post c section state agreed with the name, I do like it, it suits her now, just wish it was Fern)

maybells · 06/09/2011 14:24

honest opinion i think Fearne is a nice name, it isnt very common so i would assume most people know it to be spelt the way you spell it as the name also belongs to a celeb.

ZZZenAgain · 06/09/2011 14:25

do you pronounce it Fern?

abouttotaketheplunge · 06/09/2011 14:30

Sorry to crash this thread but worse than the names listed is referring to children as 'babbies' it makes my skin crawl

abouttotaketheplunge · 06/09/2011 14:31

Wossisface i like that name and spelling. I thought that was how you spelled it anyway?
