apatite1 To be fair the couple I've known socially would never get anywhere near my cash, were I to have any. I've no idea how to find a decent one but, as you say word of mouth locally might be best? That said, now I think on it, I'd take any financial advice with a massive fist full of salt and do my own research as well these days. Maybe I'm just a suspicious bugger.

No idea how to get 6% on savings either, assuming it is savings and not investments. I remember getting a return above that when I had some cash, but that was in the days of ICESAVE (and yes, I did have quite a bit with them when they went tits up, fortunately under the threshold so all recovered!).

Absolutely nothing, and a large mortgage. It's always something for 'next year' in our house.

Flatteredbutlost · 08/08/2014 07:58

22, about £5500.

HilariousInHindsight · 08/08/2014 08:47

About £12k between the two of us.

Quite a chunk will be going towards the wedding though.

Toadfan

You make a good point but hubby has an insecure job and my own background (dad lost a lot in last recession) just make us a bit more cautious than others!

It's not as if we suffer, I have a great life, just ordinary.

We usually have a few thousand pounds but we're in the middle of an extension and likely to have to dip into that. It's quite worrying. We bought a money-pit of a house a few years ago and if we'd bought a different house, we'd probably have a much larger safety net. Our mortgage is affordable on DH's salary alone but not mine, so I do go through periods of time worrying about what would happen to me and our two DC if something happened to him. It must be nice to be free from those 'what if...' thoughts. Hopefully we'll do a bit of frugal living and mad saving during next year and build up some savings again. But it would only ever be a few thousand pounds, otherwise we'd bring our mortgage down if we could afford a sizeable chunk.

XiCi · 08/08/2014 19:08

I don't have much savings but am overpaying my mortgage by a few hundred each month. I see that as a better investment as it's knocking years off the mortgage.

Benchmark · 08/08/2014 19:47

About 20k between us and a 250k mortgage! we are ttc and saving hard as we'll need the savings to help pay for childcare once we have a baby.

YellowTulips · 08/08/2014 19:54

About 100 -120k between us mainly accumulated since we paid off the mortgage. We started to funnel the mortgage payments into savings rather than spend them.

Just trying to build up a good amount to retire a bit early as we are early 40's now.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 08/08/2014 19:59

Currently £33k but most of that's equity from our house sale and about to be put into purchasing our new house. Usually £4-£5k which is about two months of our joint income. We do save nearly £300 a month though which we've been doing for the last year or so.

We have a mortgage (or will do when we move into our house) but no credit cards. I try to save a little every month, even when it was only £50 or so

windchime · 08/08/2014 21:49

£310. I have never been so poor.

Update on my post under a previous name 3 years ago. Our circumstances have changed hugely since then - now have £150k mortgage offset by £10k savings. Not bad considering we bought a money pit of a house 2.5 yrs ago and have completely gutted/renovated it and went over budget on it hence the mortgage. Both pensions now worth approx £300k plus £120k ISAs. We save/offset against our mortgage (rather than pay off the capital so that we can still access the cash readily plus we like the comfort of a cheap line of credit) by £500 PCM in order to technically pay off our mortgage in 8 yrs' time. We're in our early/mid 40's. Close family members have died before they even claimed their state pensions therefore, I would like to be financially secure enough to consider semi retirement before 60.

Fascinating thread - in RL, no one discloses in detail how much they save or not. I think that we have only been comfortable discussing the topic with 2 sets of friends who are in the same household income bracket but even then, it's surprising how much our outgoings differ.
