We have sufficient savings to keep us going for a while, maybe a year? This is due to a number of factors including an inheritance and 2 redundancies with payoffs. Whether losing your parents early and losing jobs is 'lucky' or 'unlucky' is a matter of opinion - it took me 10 years to work back up to the same salary level - but we're both pretty cautious as well so while we have a large nest egg saved for a rainy day, we run old cars and are sitting on furniture we bought 18 years ago. We will also have to reroof in the next 3-5 years. If we had different spending habits and were less fortunate in terms of current income, the savings pot would be smaller. DH works on contracts and may not have a job after September, so we need the savings quite soon. Who knows?

Thanks Exexpat for the advice.

wonkylegs · 19/07/2014 19:33

Less than we had as we bought a new house last year with a mortgage and have spent the past year completely refurbishing it, paid for with our savings. It feels slightly terrifying as it's a lot of money but it has completely added value to the house and would be more than realised on sale. We have a £30k contingency fund that if we don't use will still be savings. So far we are pretty much on budget so fingers crossed.

Zombieeeeee

But I love money threads. Disappointed its so old.

Interesting to read some posts from posters who are no longer posting, sadly.

LoveBeingInTheSun · 19/07/2014 19:41

Whatever is on my nectar card

Oly4 · 04/08/2014 22:50

Why is it not a good idea to revive old threads? Who cares if it's interesting?
We have 18 grand in savings, combined income of £130 grand but a whopping £300 grand mortgage. I am crap with money tbh

TOADfan · 04/08/2014 23:24

Who cares if it's zombie. I have £1000 exactly. I'm very happy with that but should be more. I earn £19,000 (though only for last 7 months before that was nmw) and only have £350 of bills a month.

I put away £150 a month, so am left with about £850 disposable income. I could save more but I'm going on holidays, theatre, dinner etc I'm still young so going to enjoy it before I have to pay rent etc.

My savings plan is to go on rent deposit and furniture etc when I do eventually move from my parents (haven't yet due to only being in a one year contract, waiting list for permanent) saying that might also go on keeping me if I'm outta work. I could manage 3 months on £1000 and has.

Lally112 · 04/08/2014 23:26

80 pounds exactly. and I need diesel so not for long.

ephemeralfairy · 04/08/2014 23:44

Not a penny. I'm starting a postgrad in sept so it has all gone to pay for that. Haven't been able to save anything for the last year as I took a pay cut to gain experience in the field I want to go into. But I rent, am not planning to ever have kids and my earning power will increase by at least £10K once I'm qualified. And I know that If I really really had to I could move back in with my mum for a bit. I am lucky, I know.

We have enough to pay all our bills and mortgage for a year should anything happen to DH's (own) company.

peggyundercrackers · 05/08/2014 13:37

we have 8x our joint annual salaries in the bank, we have a mortgage which is just over 1x my salary - I earn 3 times what OH earns.

CarmineRose1978 · 05/08/2014 13:39

About 90-100K. Between us, not just all mine.

1 years salary

We have a mortgage

CarmineRose1978 · 05/08/2014 13:48

peggy can I ask why you haven't paid off your mortgage?

beccajoh · 05/08/2014 13:49

Absolutely nothing. Barely affording the mortgage right now let alone saving.

Shonajay · 05/08/2014 14:00

House is paid off next month as we overplayed for years where we could. Have endownpments matured for kids for first flat deposit, pay maximum into pension and have about £80,000 in savings. If it were up to me we would be penniless- dh is the money one!

MorphineDreams · 05/08/2014 14:02

20k

TheGoop · 05/08/2014 14:04

£100

Shonajay · 05/08/2014 14:05

We didnt pay off our mortgage when we could as we had a cracker of a deal- earned more in the bank.

Droflove · 05/08/2014 14:05

I have about £170k which sounds amazing until I tell you it's all about to be added to a mortgage and spent on my first house in the next few weeks. Will have very little after that so it will be a lean year of relying on hubbies savings and our salaries.

peggyundercrackers · 05/08/2014 14:05

CarmineRose1978 because we get more interest on our money in the bank than we pay for our mortgage. our mortgage is small and manageable and if we paid it off it wouldn't really make a difference to our monthly costs/savings.

Southpaws · 05/08/2014 14:19

About 15k savings, earn about 90k a year between us. In our early thirties.

Spent about 35k of our savings last year on a deposit for a house.

We have some other property with quite a lot of equity in which is also a safety net. We ended up as accidental landlords because we had to move house quickly for new jobs following redundancy, but now it has happened (while not ideal) and not wanting to further enrage the people on the 'landlords are immoral thread I see it as another savings pot.

We are v careful with money and save about 500-1000 a month, could be more if we were really strict.

JeanSeberg · 05/08/2014 14:31

To those with high levels of savings, where do you 'keep' them to get maximum interest?
