Wow this thread is really interesting. there seems to be people with loads (well in my eyes anyway) and then people like me with absolutely nothing!

I was made redundant in 2009 and spent everything i had, and used credit cards. Worked temp jobs but only manage to live hand to mouth since. Selling my flat (jointly owned with ex) and look to get about 1.5k (er...woo!Confused).

i lost a tooth quite close to the front and have been told the nhs don't do crowns or implants so i would need a plate (shudder) and i was hoping to spend the money on fixing my gob (it gets unfavourable comments often and i am starting to feel really self conscious) but it looks as tho i will need to pay it onto my credit card and overdraft :(

DP on the other hand earns shit loads and has about 30k in the bank and buys £750 of shares per month. (while i cry often about not being able to afford a drink/shoes/haircut etc)

suebfg · 07/09/2011 20:09

As long as you've got a few months salary as a back up, focus on repaying any debts (including mortgage) rather than saving for the sake of it.

bananatrifle · 07/09/2011 20:35

I feel the same as Spuddybean - really amazed at how much some people have spare to save each month and in awe of the ones who have seen some really tough times and have fought their way out of it and now able to save loads.

I can't imagine ever not being in debt, one way or another - and that's not because I'm a spend thrift or because I want to be this way.... circumstances all lead us to where we are, and if you're lucky enough to be able to save, that's brilliant.

Me.......I'm buying a ticket tomorrow for Friday night's lottery :)

eslteacher · 07/09/2011 21:09

28 years old, I've got £5,000 (which is about 20% of my annual salary). At the moment I'm trying to save £200 - £300 per month. No mortgage, but neither do I own - I live with my DP in the house that he owns and pays the mortgage on.

TBH, I get quite stressed out if I think about my long-term financial future... particularly the fact that due to various circumstances I don't have a pension fund at the moment. Also the fact of not being on the property ladder in my own right and no sign of when on earth I'd be in a financial position to get on it.

My only consolation (if you can call it that) is that I'm the only child of an only child, as is my DP. Pretty grim and mercenary and I hate thinking like that, but given the financial forecasts for my generation when we become OAPs, it's something.

ownthreadhider · 07/09/2011 21:35

YABU. Nosey caw.

Hoper2 · 19/07/2014 14:43

I am ok. I am in credit with all of my bills. I have no debts. I am nowhere near 40yrs at all. I am lucky to have been accepted by a Private Bank. I am also a single parent, but am very good with saving and I am lucky to have support from good colleagues/family.

However, not been funny but I don't think its a good idea to state how much savings one has so freely. In this day and age. Its not good.

Vivacia · 19/07/2014 14:50

It's not "this day and age" though is it? You've posted on a thread 3 years old.

Hoper2 · 19/07/2014 14:59

I have just joined. I don't think there is any need to be so rude. i haven't been rude to you. If you google 'day and Age' that can apply to present and past. Its called 'Figure of speech'. Good luck with your savings.

HecatePropylaea · 19/07/2014 15:08

She wasn't being rude, really. Bit flippant maybe in the way she pointed out that this conversation took place in 2011 and is now a dead conversation.

tbh, I don't know why mn don't lock them after a certain time. That would make more sense than the zombie thing.

The zombie thread thing is fine, it's mildly amusing- but a person has to understand what a zombie thread is! Grin Newbies often don't.

We've had threads about a first day of school resurrected when the child in question must now have left school. People don't check the date of the conversation.

exexpat · 19/07/2014 15:12

Hoper2 - this is what is known as a zombie thread - one that was started years ago. The last post before yours was nearly three years ago. You may have seen the warning before you posted.

If you are new to Mumsnet you may not have realised that it's not seen as a good idea to revive ancient threads - if you want to talk about a similar topic, try starting a new thread.

exexpat · 19/07/2014 15:15

(If you want to get the hang of mumsnet, don't search out old threads, have a look on Active Conversations for what people are talking about at the moment, or look at recent posts under various topic headings in Talk topics.)

Norfolknway · 19/07/2014 15:15

Nowt!

Vivacia · 19/07/2014 15:33

Nowt!

See what you've started now Hoper?!

With both me and DH loosing our jobs within weeks of each other we have none. We did have a few thousand but we ate through that whilst DH job hunted, and I was in and out of various hospitals.
DH now has a job but money is very tight, so we have very little put by, and what we do put by always seems to be needed - to replace a broken electrical item (microwave, vacuum cleaner, washing machine, kettle).
So at the moment we have no savings, but we have no debt other than our mortgage (which is very reasonable) so I see that as a big positive.

FluffyPiggle · 19/07/2014 17:31

We always say whatever we have left at the end of the month we'll save. Unfortunately you can't save a minus number!

DF always nagging about it. He thinks on my salary (17k) I could save for a property quite easily. This is coming from someone who pays the absolute extortion that is £400 for a 2 bedroom council house...

Baddderz · 19/07/2014 17:37

We had some til we bought a money pit of a house :(
Since we moved in 2.5 years ago we have had to spend £15k...new boiler, roof, kitchen...all dangerous/leaky/faulty.
Starting to think we have over stretched tbh :(

Fluffy40 · 19/07/2014 17:49

About 30k savings and 30k premium bonds.

susiedaisy · 19/07/2014 17:51

I'm 43 divorced two dc
500 pounds in savings
3000 grand in debt
Homeowner with a medium sized mortgage.

susiedaisy · 19/07/2014 17:53

Ah old thread!!!

Ilovenewts · 19/07/2014 18:23

God almighty I though I was doing well with 2 grand... And that's going towards buying a house....no time soon.

LumionaMoonsplash · 19/07/2014 18:29

Wow this is depressing, I had loads (for us) when I originally posted in 2011. Sad oh well Mat leave will do that.

Madamecastafiore · 19/07/2014 18:33

I have no idea as am one of those awful women who will get lambasted for saying she leaves all that to DH. I do know he will always have a years mortgage payments put by just in case though.

Voodoobooboo · 19/07/2014 18:34

2 years salary. I have a well paid but unstable job and no back up plan. It what stands between DS and me vs destitution.
