Total ban on hoodies absolutely everywhere

To want a total ban on hooded tops? DS was mugged for 2nd time yesterday on Putney Bridge ( a huge bridge that incoporates a road and pavements) at 4pm, all members of the gang of nasty, despicable, low life, scum thieves were wearing them, grrrrrr!

I wear a hoodie in bed when its cold. Sometimes with the hood up. Actually, this is really good if you're sleeping in a boat or tent or suchlike - I have one which I can pull right down over my eyes, thus acting as eyeshade and nosewarmer - at last, a solution to Campers Nose! Grin

MillyR · 01/09/2011 19:57

How absolutely ridiculous.

If hoods were banned, how would we keep dry? Should we all walk around in sou'westers?

limitedperiodonly · 01/09/2011 21:58

Riven is right. We should have police about.

We're all in this together. Except most of us aren't. Even if we're on Putney Bridge. Which isn't that far from me in my Germolline pink cashmere hoody.

Anyone want to join me in telling Dave and Theresa that we'd rather not cut police numbers in London or anywhere else?

unsuspectingclodpate · 02/09/2011 00:04

Sorry about your son. hope he's ok.

mumsamilitant · 02/09/2011 09:25

Morning, back at desk again and less angry, not a lot but a little Smile
Update from Police yesterday evening - they couldn't identify 4 of the group due to their faces being obscured by hoods, but as luck would have it they recognise one of them as a local lad piece of scum. They were able to do this because he turned full face to the camera.

I for one will not be buying my DS of nearly 14 anymore hooded tops. He actually agrees with me too.

Thanks to everyone who offered my son and myself support.

To all the ones who felt it necessary to use insults go boil your heads grow up. Mind you, didn't know there were so many ways to spell the word "stupid" Grin

Special little note for Pinot Stay off my threads!

My son was mugged a few years ago, we managed to find the little shits in a nearby shop and got what I thought was his phone off them but couldn't keep them in the shop long enough for the police to get there,

Turned out it wasn't my sons phone it was one they had taken off another kid just before they mugged mine. The police caught them but over a year later when it came to identifying them two of the three kids they mugged couldn't Id them so the case was dropped

Hope your son is feeling ok

Faithless12 · 02/09/2011 09:56

Yabu. Lock up my 2 month old then. As he has a hoody, its great when he's in the sling no cold air down the neck. More police walking the streets is a far better idea than banning a piece of clothing. Having a clear image of them doesn't equal conviction, same with a perfect fingerprint (knows from experience).

ConstanceNoring · 02/09/2011 10:30

OP practically everyone has disagreed with your blanket hoody ban idea, but they've all expressed sympathy about what happened to your son.

And why single Pinot out?

southmum · 02/09/2011 10:40

YABU

Its shit whats happened but bannning an item of clothing wont help at all and its silly to think it will. They'll just start wearing scarves, hooded coats etc

Hoodies do not a thug make - take your DS for double standards for example.

mumeeee · 02/09/2011 10:40

YABU. Both my 19 and 21 year old DDs wear hoodies. They are not rough gang members but just nice well behaved girls. I know a lot of other young people who also wear hoodies. They wear them because they like them. In fact I also wear hooded tops sometimes.

Pakdooik · 02/09/2011 11:05

Mumsamilitant Sorry to hear about your son, I hope he's not physically hurt and that the upset and shock won't take too long to wear off.

Shame that a nasty experience to him, gets the wise guys out in force. Hooded tops on thugs are a problem but I don't have any solutions

mumsamilitant · 02/09/2011 11:16

ConstanceNoring. Not sure what you're point is?

Whats the double standard thing going on with you southmum? I just said that my son isn't going to wear hooded tops anymore due to the controversy surrounding them.

As for Faithless - being able to see who they are is advantageous one thinks.

I'm wearing a hoodie right now. AT my desk at work - yes despite my hoodie wearing I have an actual job. Quite a good one too. How would banning hoodies stop muggings? Will scarves be banned too?

mumsamilitant · 02/09/2011 11:25

Pakdooik, thanks for your comments, much appreciated. Yep, turning into a bit of a scrap as usual huh! Sad

I can't see how such a ban would work in practical terms unfortunately. I'm very sorry to hear what happened to your DS though OP, and hope he's OK, and I completely understand the feeling that 'something' has to be done about people like that.

Don't see how it would help to ban me (law-abiding 30 year old woman) from putting my hood up when I'm out walking my dog in the rain/cold though. Or do we just say they should be banned on people of certain age/gender/race? Difficult to justify. And wouldn't the criminals just carry on wearing hoods anyway? After all, mugging people is technically 'banned' but they still do it!

I agree having more police out and about would do a lot of good. In fact, more police generally. Last year I had to call 999 for the police, and was put in a queue (like when you phone the bank or something). Was told when they finally came that this is quite normal in our part of London, as there just aren't enough staff to handle the volume of calls. I was quite shocked, you tend to think if you phone 999 you get an immediate response!

EvaPeron · 02/09/2011 11:33

Wouldn't banning hoodies just make them seem more attractive to the kids that want to cause trouble, whilst just putting more rules onto the kids that don't?

Somewhere (might have been Brighton, I can't remember) had a campaign to make them deeply unfashionable. Lots of the over 70's took to wearing them. It is not cool to dress like your Gran!

Pendeen · 02/09/2011 11:37

Does anyone know if the French ban on burkas is being enforced? Does it work?

Isn't it a simple ban on hiding one's face in public buildings - which would include hoodies, motorbike helmets, scarves, and so on?

mumsamilitant · 02/09/2011 11:37

Right time for a bit of clarification.

Minority of teens that unfortunately cause total havoc to hundreds conseal themselves purposely by wearing hooded tops.

Many adults on the streets/shopkeepers now view youths (not not toddlers/babies faithless) wearing hooded tops with fear and distrust.

I for one know that my son has it hard enough being a teenager without having to encounter this type of prejudice.

Therefore think its a good idea that he doesn't wear them and wish that the manufacturers stop making them....

Justcanthelpit · 02/09/2011 11:38

sorry to hear about your son, give him a big hug, v scary experience

acsec · 02/09/2011 11:38

I love my hoodies and even wear the hood up when I'm very cold. I'm not a mugger though.

Sorry to hear about your DS but banning hoodies would not stop muggers, they would hide their face another way.

upahill · 02/09/2011 11:49

I understand what you are saying mumsamilitant
So do you think it should be all manufactures that stop making hoodies or just the trendy brands that the teenagers like such as Superdry and Fox.

I had a look through my wardrobe yesterday after this thread and I have
3 x animal hoodies
1 x Roxy
4x Berghaus
1 x Sprayaway
2 x North face

Like I said before these are all outdoor wear brands and I wear them casually, to work, on the beach, on the mountains, on the ski slopes, on walks. I keep one in a rucksac so on a nice day I walk in a t shirt and then put a hoody on for lunch stops.
They are a pratical wear and I do use the hood as well as liking the style

I also have an animal and a superdry hoody shirt that I love with my jeans and Converse.

I hope you are feeling better and your DS is alright.

horrible thing to happen.

mumsamilitant · 02/09/2011 12:33

Hi Upahill, I just wish they would go out of fashion I guess. Yes, there will be something else no doubt.

At work and megga busy so forgive me if I don't make too much sense of what I'm trying to project.

At the end of the day, us as parents know teenagers/young adults wearing these things now cause alarm and controversy so I for one won't buy them for my DS.

For all the MNer's that say... Well I wear one and Im not a mugger:

A for instance (very poor one but hope you will get my gyst). Security at airports won't let you take certain size bottles on the plane. I'm not a bomber so why shouldn't I. Unfortunately, a minority of people have used such containers for substances to blow the plane up.

Motorcyclists are not allowed to walk into places in their crash helmets. Yes, most are just bikers etc. But its disallowed due to obscuring the face.

Maybe a ban for youths in large cities? Or wear the damn thing but keep the hood down.

OP posts:
Katiepoes · 02/09/2011 12:38

So what will be banned on muggers that do not wear hoodies? Shoes? Most muggers wear shoes. Seriously, I am sorry about your poor son, it's awful, but banning clothing will not help.

Ephiny · 02/09/2011 12:45

Are we talking about any clothing with a hood, e.g. coats and waterproof jackets? Or just those sweatshirt/hoodie things?

I don't think it's the same as the bottle on a plane/motorcycle helmet in buildings thing. The closer equivalent would be banning all bottles and helmets 'absolutely everywhere' to quote the OP. You're still allowed to wear helmets when you're actually riding a motorbike, because that's what they're for. There's not really any good reason to wear one when you go into the bank, for example. But there is good reason to wear a hood when outdoors on a cold/windy/rainy day!

LadyBeagleEyes · 02/09/2011 12:51

You are being utterly ridiculous OP.
Hoodies, hoods on coats, hats -do we just ban them all?
I don't wear a hoodie, don't like them, but I have a coat with a hood for when it rains.
And Pinot can post anywhere she likes, it's a website.
